Japan Travel Cost 2027: What Things Actually Cost (Real 2026 Prices)
Japan travel cost in 2027 comes down to roughly ¥10,000 a day on a tight budget, ¥20,000–¥32,000 mid-range and ¥120,000+ for luxury, per person, before flights and long-distance trains. The yen is still kind to visitors, but 2026 added new charges: a ¥3,000 departure tax, a much higher Kyoto hotel tax and a new Tokyo hotel tax from April 2027.
Below are real prices checked on 18 October 2026 for transport, food, hotels, attractions, data and lockers, plus the new taxes, three daily budgets and 10 ways to spend less. Every figure links to the operator or government page it came from.

How much does a trip to Japan cost per day in 2027?
Here is the short version, per person, per day, excluding international flights and Shinkansen tickets. We built these from the prices in this guide, assuming two people share a room on mid-range and luxury trips.
| Item | Budget | Mid-range | Luxury |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bed | Hostel dorm ¥4,000–¥5,000 | Half a ¥20,000–¥40,000 double: ¥10,000–¥20,000 | Half a 5-star room: ¥40,000+ |
| Breakfast | Konbini: ¥500 | Café set: ¥800–¥1,000 | Hotel buffet: ¥3,000+ |
| Lunch | Ramen or teishoku: ¥1,000 | Lunch set: ¥1,500 | Sushi or kaiseki lunch: ¥5,000–¥10,000 |
| Dinner | Izakaya or chain: ¥2,000–¥3,000 | Izakaya with drinks: ¥3,000–¥5,000 | Omakase or kaiseki: ¥20,000+ |
| City transport | Subway pass: ¥1,000 | IC card plus a taxi: ¥1,500–¥3,000 | Taxis: ¥5,000+ |
| Sights | Free shrines, one paid site: ¥0–¥1,500 | Two paid sights: ¥3,000–¥5,000 | Private guide or theme park: ¥10,000+ |
| Daily total | ¥9,000–¥12,000 | ¥20,000–¥32,000 | ¥120,000+ |
For comparison, japan-guide.com puts a low budget at ¥5,000–¥13,000 and medium at ¥13,000–¥28,000 per solo traveller, excluding transport. Our ranges sit higher because Tokyo and Kyoto hotel rates kept climbing through 2025 and 2026.
How much does a trip to Japan cost for a week? A worked example
Here is a real Japan travel cost calculation for one person on a mid-range 7-night trip: four nights in Tokyo, three in Kyoto, sharing a ¥30,000 double room. It uses only prices quoted in this guide.
| Item | Calculation | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Tokyo hotel, 4 nights | ¥15,000 × 4 + ¥200 tax × 4 | ¥60,800 |
| Kyoto hotel, 3 nights | ¥15,000 × 3 + ¥400 tax × 3 | ¥46,200 |
| Shinkansen Tokyo–Kyoto and back | ¥14,170 × 2 (Nozomi, reserved) | ¥28,340 |
| Lebensmittel | ¥6,000 × 7 days | ¥42,000 |
| City transport | ¥1,500 × 7 days | ¥10,500 |
| Sights | Skytree, Shibuya Sky, teamLab Planets, Kinkaku-ji, plus ¥2,000 extra | ¥11,100 |
| Departure tax | Included in your airfare | ¥3,000 |
| Total | Before flights and data | About ¥202,000 |
Add data (an eSIM from about US$26.50 a week) and your flights. If the same trip starts on or after 1 April 2027, the Tokyo tax on a ¥15,000 night becomes 3%, or ¥450, adding ¥1,000 over four nights.
Shopping is the wild card. Since tax-free purchases now cost the full price at the till, your card will carry the extra 10% until the refund arrives.
What are the new Japan travel costs for 2026–27?
Five rule changes matter for anyone pricing a 2027 trip. Two are already in force, two start on fixed dates, and one is not here yet.
Departure tax: ¥3,000 since 1 July 2026
The International Tourist Tax rose from ¥1,000 to ¥3,000 per departure on 1 July 2026, according to the Japan Tourism Agency. It is collected in your air or ferry fare, so you rarely pay it separately.
Tickets issued on or before 30 June 2026 keep the old ¥1,000 rate, even for later departures. Children under 2 are exempt.
Kyoto accommodation tax: up to ¥10,000 a night since 1 March 2026
Kyoto now has the highest hotel tax in Japan. It is charged per person, per night, on the room rate, per the Kyoto City Official Travel Guide.
| Room rate per person per night | Kyoto tax from 1 March 2026 |
|---|---|
| Under ¥6,000 | ¥200 |
| ¥6,000–¥19,999 | ¥400 |
| ¥20,000–¥49,999 | ¥1,000 |
| ¥50,000–¥99,999 | ¥4,000 |
| ¥100,000 or more | ¥10,000 |
Before March 2026 the top rate was ¥1,000. A couple in a ¥60,000-per-person ryokan now pays ¥8,000 tax per night.
Tokyo accommodation tax: 3% from 1 April 2027
Tokyo charges ¥100 per person per night on rooms of ¥10,000–¥14,999 and ¥200 at ¥15,000 or more today. From stays on 1 April 2027, it switches to 3% of the room rate for anything at ¥13,000 per person per night or more, confirmed by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government on 30 June 2026.
The new tax also covers guesthouses and private rentals (minpaku) for the first time. A ¥20,000 night goes from ¥200 to ¥600 in tax; a ¥50,000 night pays ¥1,500.
Osaka accommodation tax: ¥200–¥500
Osaka Prefecture raised its rates on 1 September 2025, per Osaka Info. Rooms under ¥5,000 are exempt; ¥5,000–¥14,999 pays ¥200; ¥15,000–¥19,999 pays ¥400; ¥20,000 or more pays ¥500 per person per night.
Himeji Castle: ¥2,500 unless you live in Himeji
Himeji Castle moved to two-tier pricing on 1 March 2026. Adults pay ¥2,500, Himeji residents pay ¥1,000, and under-18s go free, per the official Himeji Castle site.
The split was first discussed as a foreign-visitor price, but the final rule is based on residence, not nationality. A Tokyo resident pays the same ¥2,500 as a tourist.
Tax-free shopping becomes a refund from 1 November 2026
From 1 November 2026 you pay the full tax-inclusive price in tax-free shops and get the consumption tax back after customs checks your goods at departure, per JNTO. Budget the extra 10% on your card until the refund lands. Our Japan tax refund guide walks through every step.
JESTA travel authorisation: not before 2028
Japan amended its immigration law in May 2026 to create JESTA, an online pre-travel authorisation for visa-exempt visitors, similar to the US ESTA. The launch is planned within fiscal 2028 (April 2028–March 2029), and no fee has been set yet.
You do not need JESTA for a 2027 trip. Re-check before you book anything for spring 2028 onwards.
How much does transport cost in Japan?
Subway and JR fares in Tokyo
Tokyo Metro fares start at ¥180 with a paper ticket and ¥178 with an IC card, rising to ¥330/¥324 for 28–40 km, per Tokyo Metro. Tokyo Metro is considering its first real fare rise for March 2028 at the earliest, so 2027 fares should hold.
JR East raised fares on 14 March 2026. The minimum is now ¥160 (¥155 by IC), and Tokyo–Shinjuku on the Yamanote Line costs ¥260 (¥253 by IC), up from ¥210.
| Pass or card | 2026 price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Tokyo Subway Ticket 24h / 48h / 72h | ¥1,000 / ¥1,500 / ¥2,000 | All Tokyo Metro and Toei lines; for visitors (Tokyo Metro) |
| Welcome Suica | Load ¥1,000–¥10,000 | No deposit, valid 28 days, unused balance not refunded (JR East) |
| Japan Rail Pass, 7 days | ¥53,000 | Up from ¥50,000 on 1 October 2026 (JNTO) |
| Japan Rail Pass, 14 / 21 days | ¥84,000 / ¥105,000 | Green Car: ¥74,000 / ¥116,000 / ¥147,000 |
Shinkansen
Tokyo to Kyoto costs ¥14,170 one way on a Nozomi with a reserved seat in regular season, ¥13,850 on a Hikari and ¥13,320 unreserved. Do two long legs and a 7-day JR Pass at ¥53,000 rarely pays off unless you add a third.
JR East also scrapped its round-trip discount tickets on 13 March 2026. Price every leg as a single.

Taxis
Tokyo taxi fares rose about 10% in late April 2026. The flag fall is still ¥500, but it now covers 1 km instead of 1.096 km, and ¥100 is added every 232 m instead of every 255 m, per Jiji Press via Nippon.com.
That applies in the 23 wards plus Musashino and Mitaka. A late-night surcharge applies, so a missed last train can cost far more than the daytime meter suggests.
How much does food cost in Japan?
Food is where your Japan travel cost stays lowest. You can eat well for ¥3,000 a day, or spend ¥50,000 on one dinner.
| Food or drink | Typical 2026 price | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Konbini onigiri | ¥170–¥230 | Lawson and FamilyMart cut prices by about ¥10 in September 2026 (Pricey) |
| Konbini or fast-food lunch | ¥500–¥800 | japan-guide.com |
| Doutor blend coffee (S) | ¥300 | Up ¥20 on 23 July 2026 (Pricey) |
| Starbucks drinks | Up ¥4–¥35 from 9 October 2026 | Impress Watch |
| Neighbourhood ramen | ¥800–¥1,000 | Romancing Japan; tourist-famous shops charge more |
| Conveyor-belt sushi plate | From ¥110 | Sushiro, varies by branch (Impress Gourmet Watch) |
| Standing sushi lunch | About ¥1,500 | Romancing Japan |
| Izakaya evening | About ¥6,000 for two over three hours | Same source |
| Upscale sushi, kaiseki, steak dinner | ¥5,000+ per person | japan-guide.com; top omakase counters cost many times this |
Tipping is not expected anywhere. Some upscale restaurants and hotel bars add a 10–15% service charge, and many izakaya add a small seating charge (otōshi) with a mandatory starter.
Fine dining is where budgets break. Our guide to booking restaurants in Japan covers prices, fees and cancellation charges at sought-after counters.

How much does accommodation cost in Japan?
Rooms are the biggest line in any Japan travel cost estimate, and the one rising fastest. The Tokyo Hotel Association reported an average daily rate of ¥19,028 in December 2024, up 13.2% year on year and its 25th straight monthly rise.
| Type | Typical price per night | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Hostel dorm bed | Under ¥5,000 per person | Shared bathroom; capsules sit at the upper end |
| Budget single room | ¥3,000–¥10,000 | Often outside central Tokyo and Kyoto |
| Business hotel single | ¥10,000–¥20,000 | Peak dates in Tokyo and Kyoto run above this |
| Mid-range double | ¥12,000–¥30,000 | Per room, off-peak |
| Ryokan with dinner and breakfast | ¥15,000–¥40,000 per person | Kaiseki dinner included |
| 5-star hotel | From about ¥80,000 per room |
Ranges are off-peak figures from japan-guide.com, with the hotel-association rate reported by Business Journal. Cherry blossom season, Golden Week and autumn leaves in Kyoto can double them. Add the local accommodation tax on top.

How much do Japan’s top attractions cost?
Entry fees are a small part of Japan travel cost unless you add theme parks. Here are 2026 adult prices from official ticket pages.
| Attraction | Adult price (2026) | Booking note |
|---|---|---|
| Tokyo Skytree Tembo Deck | ¥2,100 weekday / ¥2,300 weekend | Tembo Deck + Galleria combo: ¥3,100 / ¥3,400 (official) |
| Shibuya Sky | ¥2,700 online before 15:00; ¥3,400 from 15:00 | Counter: ¥3,000 / ¥3,700 if online tickets remain (GO TOKYO) |
| teamLab Planets | From ¥3,800 | Dynamic pricing (teamLab) |
| Tokyo Disneyland / DisneySea 1-Day Passport | From ¥8,900; up to ¥12,400 on busy dates | Variable pricing; After 5 weekday pass ¥6,000 (Tokyo Disney Resort) |
| Universal Studios Japan 1-Day Studio Pass | From ¥8,400 | Since 1 September 2026, prices can rise after release, so buy early |
| Himeji Castle | ¥2,500 | ¥1,000 for Himeji residents; under 18 free |
| Kinkaku-ji, Kyoto | ¥500 | Shokoku-ji |
| Senso-ji, Fushimi Inari, Meiji Jingu grounds | Frei | Paid museums or gardens inside some sites |
Disney prices change by date. The October 2026 calendar shows adult passes at ¥10,900, ¥11,900 and ¥12,400 on busy days, so a weekday visit can save you ¥3,500 per person.
USJ changed its pricing for visits from 1 September 2026. Each date opens at its lowest price and can rise as it sells, per Daily Sports.

How much do SIM cards, pocket Wi-Fi and lockers cost?
Data is a small Japan travel cost if you sort it before you land. Airalo’s unlimited Japan eSIM costs US$26.50 for 7 days or US$48 for 15 days on SoftBank, per its Japan eSIM page.
Pocket Wi-Fi suits groups sharing one connection. LIVE JAPAN’s August 2026 comparison found ¥754–¥1,423 a day for 7-day rentals from eConnect, Sakura Mobile and Japan Wireless, with airport pickup at Narita and Haneda (LIVE JAPAN).
Coin lockers at Tokyo Station cost ¥300 (SS), ¥500 (S), ¥700–¥800 (M) and ¥900–¥1,000 (L), per JR East. Bookable Multi-Ecube lockers add ¥100–¥200 for M and L sizes at busy times.
10 ways to cut your Japan travel cost
- Price the JR Pass honestly. At ¥53,000 it needs roughly four long Shinkansen legs in 7 days. Regional passes such as the JR Tokyo Wide Pass often win.
- Eat your big meal at lunch. Sushi and kaiseki counters often serve lunch courses at a fraction of dinner prices.
- Book Disney and USJ for quiet weekdays, early. Variable and demand pricing reward early buyers and weekday visits.
- Watch the Kyoto tax bands. Moving from a ¥50,000 to a ¥49,000 room per person cuts the Kyoto tax from ¥4,000 to ¥1,000 a night.
- Stay under ¥13,000 per person in Tokyo from April 2027. Rooms below that line pay no Tokyo hotel tax; above it, 3% applies to every night from 1 April 2027.
- Use an IC card, not paper tickets. IC fares are the same or a few yen cheaper on JR and Tokyo Metro.
- Buy Shibuya Sky online before 15:00. The same view costs ¥700 more after 15:00 and ¥300 more at the counter.
- Lean on free sights. Senso-ji, Fushimi Inari and Meiji Jingu cost nothing. Our Tokyo hidden gems guide has more.
- Pick a night out with a fixed price. Nomihodai (all-you-can-drink) plans and set courses stop izakaya bills creeping up.
- Plan the last train. A cross-city taxi after midnight can cost more than a budget hotel room.

Tax-free now means a refund
From 1 November 2026 you pay tax up front and claim it back at the airport before check-in.
Check the date, not the booking
Tokyo’s 3% hotel tax applies to nights from 1 April 2027, wherever you booked.
Children under 2 skip the tax
Infants under 2 are exempt from the International Tourist Tax.
