The best bars in Tokyo for 2026 start with five names on the official World’s 50 Best Bars 2026 ranking: Bar BenFiddich (No. 44), Virtù (No. 48), Bar Trench (No. 74), The SG Club (No. 88) and The Bellwood (No. 100). Two of them made the top 50, announced on 7 October 2026 in Milan, and Tokyo had seven bars on Asia’s 50 Best Bars 2026 (1–100 list).

This guide covers those award winners plus the hidden bars our feeds can’t stop sharing: a vinyl listening bar, a coffee shop with a secret door and a new chai bar in Shimokitazawa. For each one you get the address, opening hours, real prices, cover charges and the official booking link. Then we cover etiquette, smoking rules, a one-night bar crawl and last trains.

Who ranked what in 2026: The World’s 50 Best Bars 2026 (published by 50 Best) has Bar Leone in Hong Kong at No. 1 for the second year running. Tokyo’s two top-50 bars both slipped: BenFiddich from No. 18 in 2025 to No. 44, Virtù from No. 45 to No. 48. The Bellwood, No. 48 in 2025, is now No. 100 on the 51–100 list. On Asia’s 50 Best Bars 2026 (announced 28 July 2026 in Macau), Tokyo’s top entries are Punch Room Tokyo (23), Virtù (26) and Bar Libre (39). Bar Trench (53), BenFiddich (62), The Bar at the Ritz-Carlton Tokyo (75) and The Bellwood (79) appear in the 51–100 extension.

With 24.5 million international visitors from January to July 2026 (JNTO), seats at these small counters are tight. Book early.

The Lowdown: Tokyo’s highest-ranked bar on the 2026 world list. There’s no menu: owner-bartender Hiroyasu Kayama builds each drink around your favourite spirit, often using herbs he grows himself, crushed by hand at the counter. Fifteen seats, theatrical service, house-made absinthe and vermouth.

Where: 9F Yamatoya Building, 1-13-7 Nishi-Shinjuku, Shinjuku-ku. About 5 minutes from JR Shinjuku Station West Exit.

The Vibe: Candlelit apothecary. Quiet, intense, very personal.

Price: No menu prices. Tabelog lists a 10% table charge plus 10% service charge; diners’ reviews put the average at ¥8,000–¥9,999 per person. Non-smoking.

Official Link: Reserve on TableCheck · Instagram @benfiddich_tokyo

💡 Japan Pro Tip: The schedule is irregular and the bar closes when Kayama isn’t there. Next month’s dates go live on the 20th (also posted on Instagram) with seatings at 19:00, 21:00 and 23:00. Be on time: bookings are cancelled after 15 minutes. Groups of more than five can’t book, and the phone isn’t answered during service. Tabelog warns about fake booking sites, so use the TableCheck link only.

2. Virtù (Hotel Cocktail Lounge – World’s 50 Best No. 48)

The Lowdown: An Art Deco lounge on the 39th floor of the Four Seasons Hotel Tokyo at Otemachi, now on the world list for the third year running. Official Link: Virtù official page · Tel. +81 3 6810 0655

Reservations aren’t required, but for a window seat at sunset, arrive at 17:00 opening on a weekday. It’s the easiest top-50 bar for a first-timer.

3. Bar Trench (Cocktail Bar – World’s 51–100 No. 74)

4. The SG Club (Cocktail Bar – World’s 51–100 No. 88)

The Lowdown: Shingo Gokan’s multi-floor bar near Shibuya, with a different bar on each level. The ground-floor Guzzle is casual, while the basement Sip is the serious cocktail room. Upstairs Savor is members-only.

The Vibe: Guzzle: lively and standing-friendly. Sip: dark and intimate.

Price: Guzzle has no table charge or service charge. Sip adds 10% service charge (no table charge). Tabelog puts the evening budget at ¥5,000–¥5,999.

Official Link: Instagram @the_sg_club · Tel. 050 3138 2618

💡 Japan Pro Tip: The bar’s Instagram lists Guzzle and Sip at 18:00–01:00. Tabelog says it’s closed on the fourth Monday and Time Out says Mondays, so check Instagram before a Monday visit. Start at Guzzle for one drink with no charge, then ask if Sip has seats.

5. The Bellwood (Cocktail Bar – World’s 51–100 No. 100)

The Lowdown: Atsushi Suzuki’s Oku-Shibuya bar, styled on Taisho-era café-bars, with a cocktail menu structured like a kaiseki meal. It’s now independent from the SG Group. Hidden at the back is Bell Sushi, an unmarked counter serving a 12-piece omakase with three cocktails. Book early.

The Vibe: Playful, escape-room energy, date-night friendly.

Official Link: Janai Coffee official site · Instagram @janai_coffee

💡 Japan Pro Tip: The official site and Instagram list 18:00–24:00, and Instagram says it’s open every day. Time Out lists Tuesdays as closed and the site posted a schedule-change notice in January 2026, so check before you go. Hint: look closely at the logo on the website. On the night, open your booking page on your phone and show it to the barista, who points you to the door.

10. OCHER (Café & Cocktail Bar)

The Lowdown: Shimokitazawa’s newest late-night hangout, opened on 27 July 2026. The theme is Japanese tea and spices: chai made with Japanese black tea, hojicha or matcha, chai cocktails and cinnamon bakes. It’s the sister shop of THREE in Sangenjaya.

Official Link: Instagram @ocher_shimokita

💡 Japan Pro Tip: Opens 13:00 on weekdays and 11:00 at weekends and on holidays, then runs until 05:00. Same menu all day. Go before 18:00 to skip the ¥800 cover, or come late after the Shimokitazawa live houses empty out. More in our Shimokitazawa guide.

Tokyo bar etiquette: cover charges, otōshi and tipping

Japanese bars charge differently from bars back home. Check these before you sit down:

  • Table charge / cover: Many bars add a fixed per-person fee. Real 2026 examples: OCHER ¥800 after 18:00 (plus 10% after 22:00), Banten ¥1,320 music charge, BenFiddich a 10% charge.
  • Service charge: Usually 10–15%. BenFiddich and SG Club’s Sip add 10%. Punch Room’s prices already include 15% service.
  • Otōshi: At izakaya-style bars, a small dish you didn’t order arrives with your first drink. It’s the cover charge in food form, not a mistake. Craft cocktail bars rarely do this.
  • Tipping: Don’t. JNTO’s official tipping guidance says tipping is not expected, and the charges above replace it.
  • Drinking age: 20, under Japanese law (National Tax Agency). Bring ID; The Bellwood and Punch Room state they don’t admit under-20s.
  • Photos and noise: Small counters are shared spaces. Punch Room may ask guests not to take photos. At listening bars, keep conversation quiet.

Smoking rules in Tokyo bars

Since 1 April 2020, Tokyo’s passive-smoking ordinance means bars with employees are non-smoking indoors unless they have a dedicated smoking room that meets the technical standards (Meguro City summary of the Tokyo ordinance). Venues must display a sign at the entrance saying whether smoking is allowed, and under-20s may not enter smoking areas at all. Of our picks, BenFiddich is listed as non-smoking and Bar Trench bans smoking inside. Look for the sign on the door.

Ebisu hidden-bar crawl (all near Ebisu Station):

  • 18:00 – Janai Coffee for a riddle-booked coffee cocktail (book ahead).
  • 19:30 – Banten for records and a Japanese-spirit cocktail (book on TableCheck).
  • 21:30 – Bar Trench for absinthe. No bookings; after 21:00 you may queue.

Shibuya award-winner crawl: Start at The SG Club’s Guzzle (no charge) around 18:00, then walk to The Bellwood for a booked 20:00 seat. See our Shibuya guide and map.

Big-night-out version: Sunset at Virtù (opens 17:00), then Punch Room in Ginza (Friday or Saturday, open until 02:00).

For west Tokyo, BenFiddich pairs well with an early evening in Shinjuku. See things to do in Shinjuku.

Last train timing: don’t get stranded

Tokyo’s trains don’t run all night. Tokyo Metro moved its last trains up to 16 minutes earlier in 2021, and nothing runs after about 1am (Time Out). Last departures vary by station and direction, so check your exact train on the JR East timetable site or Tokyo Metro before your final round. Trains then restart around 5am. If you miss the last train, you can take a taxi or stay until first train at a late bar: Banten runs to 03:00 and OCHER to 05:00. New to the city? Start with our first time in Tokyo guide.
