This guide covers 14 winter illuminations in and around Tokyo, from 17 October 2026 to 9 May 2027. Each one has dates, lighting hours, price, nearest station and an official link. Every date was checked against the organiser’s own site or press release, Lets Enjoy Tokyo 與 Jorudan. Most competitor guides still show 2025 dates. Heads-up: a few organisers have not published everything yet. Each listing is labelled Confirmed, Expected or TBA, and where a 2026 detail is missing we give last year’s figure and say so. Last checked 17 October 2026.

The 14 best illuminations in Tokyo for 2026–27

We start with the spots Tokyo’s Instagram loves most (#東京イルミネーション), then move outwards to the theme parks and day trips.

1. Meguro River Minna no Illumination (Free riverside walk)

Tokyo winter illumination – crowds under golden-lit street trees on a Tokyo avenue at night
Tokyo’s winter light-ups draw big crowds after dark; the Meguro River’s pink LEDs are expected from early December 2026. Photo: Emiliano Lara / Pexels

The Lowdown: The most-liked Tokyo illumination on Instagram. About 390,000 pink LEDs (2025 count) line both banks of the Meguro River for 2.2 km between Osaki and Gotanda, so it looks like cherry blossom in December. This is the Shinagawa stretch, not the Naka-Meguro sakura section. Japanese name: 目黒川みんなのイルミネーション.

Status: Expected. The committee has not yet announced the 2026 edition; it usually opens on the first Friday of December (2025: Friday 5 December)
Dates: Friday 4 December 2026 – Sunday 31 January 2027 (expected)
Hours: 17:00–22:30 (2025)
Where: Gotanda Fureai Mizube Hiroba, 2-9 Higashi-Gotanda, Shinagawa. 4 minutes’ walk from JR Gotanda, 6 minutes from JR Osaki
The Vibe: Local, relaxed, very photogenic
Price: 免費
Official Link: minna-no-illumi.com
Verified: 17 October 2026, with the organiser’s site (still showing the 2025 edition) and Time Out Tokyo (Japanese)

💡 Japan Pro Tip: Start at Osaki and walk north to Gotanda. The bridges give you the classic shot looking down a tunnel of pink, and Gotanda has plenty of izakaya for dinner afterwards. Last year the season opened with a lighting ceremony; we will add the 2026 details when the committee publishes them.

2. Tokyo Midtown Christmas (Free garden show + paid ice rink)

The Lowdown: Midtown’s lawn becomes “Midwinter Lights” for 2026, with soap bubbles every 4 minutes until 20 December. New this year is a champagne lounge on the lawn, and an ice rink opens on 5 December. Older guides call it “Starlight Garden”; it is the same show in Midtown Garden. Japanese name: MIDTOWN CHRISTMAS 2026.

Status: Confirmed
Dates: Thursday 26 November – Friday 25 December 2026. The light walk stays until Tuesday 23 February 2027
Hours: 17:00–23:00
Where: Midtown Garden, Tokyo Midtown, Roppongi. Direct from Roppongi Station (Oedo and Hibiya lines)
The Vibe: Polished, couple-heavy, Christmas-card pretty
Price: Illumination free. Ice rink ¥2,000 adults / ¥1,400 children (¥2,300 / ¥1,700 from 12 Dec to 3 Jan), skate hire ¥500. Lounge (until 20 December) entry needs a food or drink order
Official Link: tokyo-midtown.com
Verified: 17 October 2026, with the Tokyo Midtown press release via Fashion Press

💡 Japan Pro Tip: The Christmas market is indoors at Galleria B1 (11:00–21:00), so it is a good backup if it rains. The rink price goes up from 12 December, so skate earlier if you can.

3. Roppongi Hills Keyakizaka “SNOW & BLUE” (Free street illumination)

Roppongi Hills Keyakizaka illumination – lit street trees in Tokyo at night
Keyakizaka’s 400 m of lights run 5 Nov–25 Dec 2026, 17:00–22:00. Photo: Leo Okuyama / Unsplash

The Lowdown: This is Tokyo’s classic Christmas lights shot. About 970,000 white-and-blue LEDs run 400 m down Keyakizaka, with Tokyo Tower lit up at the end of the street. It is also the first big city-centre switch-on, on 5 November. Japanese name: けやき坂イルミネーション.

Status: Confirmed
Dates: Thursday 5 November – Friday 25 December 2026
Hours: 17:00–22:00 (the first day may start later; hours can change for crowd control)
Where: Keyakizaka-dori, Roppongi 6-chome. 5 minutes’ walk from Roppongi Station
The Vibe: Iconic, busy, a bit glamorous
Price: 免費
Official Link: Christmas Hills 2026
Verified: 17 October 2026, with the Mori Building press release

💡 Japan Pro Tip: The lights are switched off at 22:00 here, an hour before Midtown, so do Keyakizaka first. The 20th Roppongi Hills Christmas Market runs 21 November–25 December (11:00–21:00) at Oyane Plaza. 66 Plaza stays lit until midnight.

4. Tokyo Midtown Hibiya “Magic Time” + Park View Garden (Free rooftop and plaza)

The Lowdown: The illumination runs across Hibiya Step Square, the Grand Staircase and Hibiya Naka-dori. The best part is the 6F Park View Garden terrace, a free open-air terrace with a view over Hibiya Park. It also has one of the longest runs on this list, until the end of February. Japanese name: HIBIYA Magic Time Illumination 2026.

Status: Confirmed
Dates: Thursday 12 November 2026 – Sunday 28 February 2027 (the Step Square tree until 25 December)
Hours: 16:00–23:00
Where: Tokyo Midtown Hibiya, 1-1-2 Yurakucho. Direct from Hibiya Station
The Vibe: Grown-up, calmer than Roppongi

The Lowdown: The street trees along Marunouchi Naka-dori are lit for the whole winter. For Christmas 2026 the whole Marunouchi–Otemachi–Yurakucho district adds Harry Potter “magic snow” displays in the Marunouchi Building, Shin-Marunouchi, OAZO and Brick Square. Japanese name: 丸の内イルミネーション.

Status: Confirmed (hours TBA)
Dates: Thursday 12 November 2026 – Sunday 14 February 2027. Harry Potter displays until Friday 25 December

The Vibe: Elegant, office-district calm on weekends
Price: 免費
Official Link: marunouchi.com
Verified: 17 October 2026, with the Mitsubishi Estate press release (PDF)

💡 Japan Pro Tip: Pair it with Hibiya, a 10–15 minute walk south, and do both in one evening. Full hours are due in late October; until then, assume dusk to late evening and check the official page.

6. Yebisu Garden Place Baccarat ETERNAL LIGHTS (Free chandelier display)

The Lowdown: A Baccarat chandelier, one of the largest in the world, hangs in Center Plaza. Last season it stood about 5 m tall, with 8,500 crystal parts and 250 lights. Around it are about 100,000 lights, a 10 m tree and a Christmas marché. Japanese name: バカラ エターナル ライツ.

Status: Confirmed
Dates: Saturday 14 November 2026 – Monday 11 January 2027 (chandelier). The wider illumination runs to Sunday 28 February

The Vibe: Romantic, the classic Tokyo date-night spot
Price: 免費
Official Link: event.gardenplace.jp
Verified: 17 October 2026, with the official special site and Yakei FAN

💡 Japan Pro Tip: The chandelier is lit from 11:00, so you can see it in daylight with no crowds and come back after dark. The marché (14 Nov–25 Dec) opens 17:00–20:00 on weekdays and 12:00–20:00 at weekends. It is cancelled in rain or strong wind.

7. Yomiuriland Jewellumination 2026 “Growing Light” (Theme park, paid)

The Lowdown: This is Tokyo’s biggest ticketed illumination. A whole amusement park on a hill in Inagi is lit up and the rides keep running after dark. It also runs the longest of any Tokyo light-up, from late October to early April. Japanese name: よみうりランド ジュエルミネーション.

Status: Confirmed
Dates: Thursday 29 October 2026 – Sunday 4 April 2027 (some closed days; on weekdays from 1 to 12 March the park opens in the daytime only)

Official Link: yomiuriland.com
Verified: 17 October 2026, with Jorudan, Lets Enjoy Tokyo 與 japan-guide

8. Tokyo Dome City “TOKYO SNOW DOME CITY” (Free, open late)

The Lowdown: In 2025 this display had about a million LEDs and a 15 m “snow tree” with a light-and-bubble show every 15 minutes. For 2026 it teams up with Sanrio’s Cinnamoroll, which kids will love. It is lit until midnight, the latest of any big spot on this list. Japanese name: 東京ドームシティ ウィンターイルミネーション.

Status: Confirmed
Dates: Thursday 19 November 2026 – Sunday 28 February 2027
Hours: 17:00–24:00 (may vary with sunset and events)

9. Shibuya Ao no Dokutsu “Blue Cave” (Free tunnel of blue lights)

Shibuya Ao no Dokutsu blue cave illumination – trees covered in blue lights
Ao no Dokutsu used about 500,000 blue LEDs in 2025; 2026 dates are still to be confirmed. Photo: Nagatoshi Shimamura / Unsplash

The Lowdown: About 500,000 blue LEDs (2025) cover the zelkova trees for roughly 900 m, from Koen-dori up to Yoyogi Park. Few Tokyo light-ups are as intense, and the season is short, so plan ahead. Japanese name: 青の洞窟 SHIBUYA.

Status: Date TBA. The organiser lists a 2026 edition under the ARTE TOKYO festival but has not published dates yet. Some listings pencil in mid-to-late December (japan-guide says 11–27 December 2026); treat that as unconfirmed. Last year: Thursday 4 – Thursday 25 December 2025
Hours: 17:00–22:00 (2025)
Where: Shibuya Koen-dori to Yoyogi Park’s Keyaki Namiki. 10 minutes from Shibuya or Harajuku

Official Link: ARTE TOKYO
Verified: 17 October 2026, with ARTE TOKYO, japan-guide and Walkerplus (2025 data)

💡 Japan Pro Tip: Walk it from Yoyogi Park downhill towards Shibuya. You will get the slope in your photos, and Shibuya at the bottom has the most dinner choices. We will update this listing when the organiser confirms the dates.

10. Yoyogi Forest of Lights (Timed-entry light art, paid)

The Lowdown: An immersive light trail through the woods of Yoyogi Park. Tickets are date-specific and sold in advance. You book it like a museum, not a street walk, so it never gets as packed as the free spots. Japanese name: 代々木フォレスト・オブ・ライツ ~光の森~.

The Lowdown: The zelkova trees along Omotesando are lit from Jingumae down to the Omotesando crossing, just for December. In 2026 it runs as part of the ARTE TOKYO festival under the name Omotesando Dior Illumination. If you are going to Ao no Dokutsu, this is a short walk away. Japanese name: 表参道 ディオール イルミネーション 2026.

Status: Confirmed (organiser lists it as planned)

12. Tokyo Mega Illumi at Oi Racecourse (Final season, paid)

💡 Japan Pro Tip: If you hold a rail pass, check our JR Tokyo Wide Pass day trips guide before buying tickets. Leave Tokyo after lunch, visit Ashikaga’s old school and temple in the afternoon, and be at the park for 16:30. The last trains back are earlier than you think, so check them before you leave.

How can you see the best Tokyo Christmas lights in one evening?

This route works any evening from 26 November to 25 December, when all four stops are lit. It takes about 3 hours with one subway ride. Sunset in Tokyo in December is around 16:30.

  • 16:30 – Tokyo Midtown Hibiya. Go up to the 6F Park View Garden for dusk over Hibiya Park. The lights come on from 16:00.
  • 17:15 – Marunouchi Naka-dori. Walk north under the lit trees to Tokyo Station’s red-brick Marunouchi side (about 15 minutes).
  • 18:00 – Hibiya Line to Roppongi. Hibiya Station to Roppongi is a direct ride of about 10 minutes.
  • 18:30 – Roppongi Hills Keyakizaka. Get the Tokyo Tower shot before the 22:00 switch-off, then grab mulled wine at the Christmas market (until 21:00).
  • 19:45 – Tokyo Midtown. A 10-minute walk. Bubbles in the garden (until 20 December), then dinner. The lights stay on until 23:00.

Alternative, south-west route (expected 4 December–11 January): Yebisu Garden Place’s chandelier at dusk, then two stops on the JR Yamanote Line to Gotanda for the Meguro River’s pink lights (until 22:30). Want it all planned for you, with dinner? See our Tokyo this weekend picks or book a guided evening below.

More Tokyo light-ups worth knowing in 2026

Done the big names? These have 2026 dates in organiser releases and the Let’s Enjoy Tokyo 與 iko-yo listings. Hours vary, so check before you go. The sweet spot for seeing the most at once: a weekday between Monday 7 and Friday 18 December, when nearly every show is lit and both Christmas Market sites are open.

  • Disney Christmas, Tokyo Disneyland and DisneySea: 11 Nov – 25 Dec 2026, park ticket needed (official)
  • Warner Bros. Studio Tour Tokyo “Magical Winter”: 13 Nov 2026 – 11 Jan 2027, tour ticket needed (official)
  • Tachikawa Illumination: 1 Nov 2026 – 17 Jan 2027, Sunsan Road by JR Tachikawa north exit; free
  • Ark Hills Christmas: 7 Nov – 25 Dec (planned), Ark Karajan Square, Roppongi-itchome
  • Hotel Chinzanso Tokyo garden aurora show: 10 Nov 2026 – 7 Feb 2027, short shows at set times in the hotel garden
  • Toranomon Hills Christmas: 12 Nov – 25 Dec
  • Tokyo Midtown Yaesu Christmas: 19 Nov – 25 Dec, light-and-sound show every 10 minutes; free, by Tokyo Station’s Yaesu side
  • LIGHTBEATS: 19 Nov 2026 – 31 Jan 2027 at Takeshiba, Takanawa Gateway City and Oimachi; free

Before the lights: Jingu Gaien ginkgo avenue. The ginkgo trees at Meiji Jingu Gaien turn gold from mid-November to early December. An evening light-up has run in recent years, but 2026 dates are not set yet (Jorudan). Our Tokyo autumn leaves 2026 guide tracks the peak.

How do you beat the crowds at Tokyo winter illuminations?

  • Avoid 23–25 December. In Japan, Christmas Eve is date night. In 2026, the 24th and 25th fall on a Thursday and Friday, and expect the free spots to be shoulder to shoulder.
  • Go early in the run. Late November weekdays are the quietest time for Roppongi, Marunouchi and Hibiya, and the lights are the same.
  • Arrive at switch-on or after 21:00. The rush is from 18:00 to 20:00, when offices empty out. Places lit until 23:00 or midnight (Hibiya, Midtown, Tokyo Dome City) are much calmer late.
  • Go after Christmas. Marunouchi, Hibiya, Tokyo Dome City and the Meguro River stay lit into January or February, with a fraction of the crowds.
  • Use a different exit. At Roppongi, walk in from Azabu-Juban or Nogizaka instead of using the main exit. For Meguro, start at Osaki, which is quieter than Gotanda.
  • Book timed spots. Yoyogi Forest of Lights sells date-specific tickets and SHIBUYA SKY sells timed slots. Book ahead for December weekends.

Where are the Tokyo Christmas markets in 2026?

Most guides treat Christmas markets as a separate topic. In fact, many of them sit right next to the illuminations, so you can do both in one evening. These are the 2026 dates:

Christmas market Tokyo – visitors walking under illuminated trees at a Tokyo Christmas market at night
Many 2026 Christmas markets sit right beside the illuminations, from Shin-Toyosu and Shiba Park to Roppongi and Azabudai Hills. Photo: sugar jet / Pexels
  • Tokyo Christmas Market in Shin-Toyosu: 20 November – 25 December, 11:00–21:30 (16:00 on the first day). Paid entry. tokyochristmas.net
  • Tokyo Christmas Market in Shiba Park (Onarimon Station): 4–25 December, 11:00–22:00 (16:00 on the first day), with Tokyo Tower right behind the stalls. Paid entry. In 2025, adults paid ¥1,000 on weekdays and ¥1,500 at weekends, rising to ¥2,000 from 20 December.
  • Roppongi Hills Christmas Market (20th edition): 21 November – 25 December, 11:00–21:00, Oyane Plaza.
  • Azabudai Hills Christmas Market: 21 November – 25 December, 11:00–21:00, Central Plaza.
  • Tokyo Midtown Christmas Market: Galleria B1, 11:00–21:00 during Midtown Christmas. It is indoors, so it is a good choice in rain.
  • Yebisu Christmas Marché: Clock Plaza 14 November – 25 December, Château Plaza from 27 November. 17:00–20:00 on weekdays, 12:00–20:00 at weekends.

How to photograph Tokyo’s winter illuminations

The best light is the 30–40 minutes after switch-on. In late November and December that is roughly 16:45–17:30, when the sky is still deep blue instead of black. On a phone, use night mode and tap to expose for the lights, not the sky. On a camera, start at f/2.8, 1/60s and ISO 1600–3200 for handheld street shots. Many complexes ask visitors not to use tripods or selfie sticks on crowded walkways, so check the signs before you set up. For bokeh, stand back and zoom in on a row of trees, and keep your subject away from the lights. On cold nights batteries drain fast, so keep a spare in an inside pocket.

Bonus angle: for the whole city lit up from above, the SHIBUYA SKY observation deck runs its “Sparkling View” Christmas event from 5 November to 25 December 2026 (10:00–22:30). Book a timed ticket on the 官方網站.

Book the whole evening: night tours and Christmas dinner

The lights are free. A good Christmas dinner table in Tokyo is not, and it is hard to get. Hotel and restaurant Christmas courses (around 19–25 December) open for booking in autumn and fill quickly. Many only take reservations in Japanese or by phone. That’s where we come in. Japan Pro books guided night walks, dinner courses and illumination evenings with local hosts in your language. Japan has just been named Favourite Country for a Holiday for the second year running (JNTO, 9 October 2026), and December is busy, so book early.

What’s not on this list (yet)

We’d rather leave a gap than give you a wrong date. Caretta Shiodome, a favourite on Instagram, has not announced its 2026–27 illumination. We could not confirm last season’s dates from an official source either, so we have left it out for now. Tokyo Tower and Tokyo Skytree winter events are also still waiting for full details. We will add them when the organisers publish.
