Verified September 2026

After 25 years on Japan’s most-used travel card, the Suica Penguin graduates on 31 March 2027. JR East has shortlisted three successors, and unusually for a Japanese corporate decision, it has handed the choice to the public.

Voting closes 23 September 2026 at 23:59 Japan time. It takes about thirty seconds, it is one vote per person, and you can do it from anywhere in the world. The winner is announced on 18 November.

Here are the three candidates, how to vote, and why your existing card is completely unaffected.

The Three Candidates

JR East revealed all three on 8 September 2026. Each comes with a stated design rationale, and the rationales are more considered than the shapes suggest.

Candidate A, the squirrel. An orange squirrel with a black line running from its head to the tip of its tail. That line is the railway, a single unbroken route, meant to express JR East’s role in connecting places and lives. Its designer described it as a friendly presence accompanying people through their ordinary daily movements.

Candidate B, the rabbit. A purple rabbit with long, upright ears. The ears are meant to suggest a character that listens to the people around it; the ability to leap stands for moving forward. Even the colour has an argument behind it: purple as a blend of blue for suisui, the feeling of moving along smoothly, and red for wakuwaku, excitement.

Candidate C, the one with the mole. An orange creature carrying a small companion in a shoulder pouch. The companion is a mole, which has only ever known the world underground and is being carried around by its new friend to see new places. The pair are meant to capture the feeling of going somewhere new, a nod to Suica expanding into more uses beyond the ticket gate.

💡 Lời khuyên dành cho người chơi Nhật Bản: If you are voting, look past the drawing and read the rationale. Candidate A encodes the railway itself into the character, which is the only one of the three that says “train card” without needing a caption. Candidate C carries the most story, and stories are what mascots survive on. The penguin lasted 25 years on personality, not on graphic design. Candidate B is the most conventionally cute, which is not a small advantage in a country with a very developed mascot market.

💡 Lời khuyên dành cho người chơi Nhật Bản: Note the closing time is Japan Standard Time, not your own. If you are in Europe or the Americas, 23:59 JST on the 23rd falls earlier in your day than you would assume. For most of Europe that is mid-afternoon, and for the US West Coast it is the morning of the 23rd. Vote on the 22nd and do not do the arithmetic under pressure.

Why JR East Is Retiring the Suica Penguin

The penguin has been the face of Suica since the card launched in 2001. It has aged well: it is genuinely beloved, appears on merchandise, and has its own cafe.

JR East’s stated direction is that Suica is changing from a train ticket into something broader, a payment and everyday-life platform usable well beyond station gates. A new character is part of signalling that shift.

That is also why Candidate C’s description talks about going somewhere new as Suica becomes usable in more places. The mascot brief and the business plan are the same document.

Not Everyone Is Happy About It

Worth saying plainly, because the English coverage is treating this as a fun vote: the reaction in Japan has been mixed at best. Japanese social media responded to the three candidates with widespread confusion and a good deal of “give the penguin back”, and the comments under the English posts run the same way.

That is not a reason to skip voting. A successor is happening either way, and the choice is real. But if you are expecting a celebratory mood, the actual national conversation is closer to reluctant.

Does This Affect Your Suica Card?

IC only ticket gates at a Japanese station, one open and one closed

No. Nothing about how the card works is changing.

  • Your existing Suica keeps working exactly as it does now
  • Balances, top-ups and refunds are unaffected
  • Mobile Suica is unaffected
  • Cards already printed with the penguin stay valid

The mascot is branding, not technology. If you are holding a physical penguin-design card, the only thing that changes on 1 April 2027 is that you are holding a small piece of retired iconography, which, if you like that sort of thing, is a decent reason to hang onto it rather than refunding it at the end of your trip.

Getting a Suica as a Visitor

Ticket and IC charge machines at a Tokyo subway station

Since most readers arrive at this article because they are planning a trip, the practical part.

Unregistered Suica cards are on sale again after the shortage that suspended them, so a standard Suica is obtainable at JR East station machines and ticket offices.

Welcome Suica is the visitor-oriented version, sold at major stations and airport counters. The card version is valid for 28 days from purchase, fine for most trips, but check it against your dates if you are staying longer. There is also a Welcome Suica Mobile app version for iPhone, which handles top-ups by credit card.

💡 Lời khuyên dành cho người chơi Nhật Bản: The 28-day validity on the Welcome Suica card is the detail that catches long-stay visitors. A standard unregistered Suica has no such limit and takes a refundable deposit instead. If you are in Japan for more than four weeks, or you expect to come back, the ordinary card is the better buy. If it is a two-week trip and you do not want to deal with a refund counter on the way out, Welcome Suica is simpler.

If you are landing at Haneda, the Haneda layover guide covers where the machines are before you head into the city.

Câu hỏi thường gặp

When does the Suica Penguin retire?

31 March 2027. JR East describes it as the penguin graduating after 25 years as the face of Suica since the card’s 2001 launch.

How do I vote for the new Suica character?

At JR East’s official voting site. Voting is one per person and closes 23 September 2026 at 23:59 Japan time. The winner is announced on 18 November 2026.

Can I vote from outside Japan?

Yes. The vote is open regardless of nationality or where you are.

What are the three candidates?

A squirrel with a railway line running down its back, a purple rabbit whose ears represent listening, and an orange creature carrying a mole in a shoulder pouch.

Will my Suica card stop working?

No. The change is to the mascot only. Existing cards, balances, top-ups, refunds and Mobile Suica are all unaffected, and cards printed with the penguin remain valid.

Why is JR East changing the character?

Because Suica is expanding from a transit card into a wider payment and everyday-use platform, and JR East wants a character that reflects that rather than one tied to train travel.

How do tourists get a Suica card in 2026?

Unregistered Suica cards are available again at JR East machines and ticket offices. Welcome Suica is the visitor version, valid 28 days from purchase, sold at major stations and airport counters, with a mobile version for iPhone.

Should I keep my Suica Penguin card?

If you like the design, yes. After 31 March 2027 the penguin is retired branding. The card stays valid either way, so keeping it costs you only the remaining balance and deposit.

Vote Before the 23rd

It takes half a minute, it is open to anyone anywhere, and it is one of the very few decisions about Japanese public transport that a foreign visitor gets an actual say in.

Planning a trip where you will be tapping that card several hundred times? The Tokyo bucket list covers the city in walkable routes, and the Thời điểm tốt nhất để đến thăm Nhật Bản covers when to come.
