Roppongi is Tokyo’s art district by day and its loudest nightlife strip after dark: three major museums, two observation-friendly skyscraper complexes and a club scene all sit within a 10-minute walk of Roppongi Station. This Roppongi guide covers what is on at each museum in late 2026, how the “art triangle” ticket discount actually works, which November dates to avoid, and what embassies tell visitors about Roppongi at night.

Sequencing matters here. Avoid Tuesdays, book Mori online and save Tokyo City View for sunset, and you can see two exhibitions and still be at dinner by 7pm.

How does the Roppongi art triangle discount work?

The “Art Triangle Roppongi” (ATRo for short) links the National Art Center, Tokyo, the Suntory Museum of Art and the Mori Art Museum. Show a ticket stub from a current exhibition at one of them and you get money off at the other two, one stub per person, once per venue.

Where you use the stubDiscountCatch
Mori Art Museum¥200 off adult admissionCounter tickets only; not applied to online tickets
Suntory Museum of Art¥100 off all admissionsSuntory also accepts a 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT ticket or sticker
National Art Center, TokyoVaries by exhibitionAsk at the ticket desk; check the exhibition page

Details come from the Mori Art Museum discounts page and NACT’s own discount page. The discounts cannot be combined with any other offer. Here is the catch nobody mentions: Mori’s online price is already ¥200 cheaper than its counter price, so the stub saves you nothing at Mori if you book online. It only matters for walk-ins.

Verdict: a nice bonus, not a reason to plan your day around it. The combo ticket below saves more.

What’s on at the Roppongi museums in late 2026?

Mori Art Museum: Mariko Mori: All That Shines

The museum on the 53rd floor of Roppongi Hills Mori Tower is closed until 30 October 2026 while it installs its next big show. Mariko Mori: All That Shines opens on 31 October and runs to 28 March 2027. It is organised with the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation and is the artist’s first major survey in Japan since 2002, with about 40 works from three decades.

Expect her 1990s cyborg photographs, sculpture and large interactive installations, including Wave UFO, a pod that responds to visitors’ brainwaves. Entry to the pod has limited slots, so arrive early if you want a go. Advance tickets are for a set date and time; walk-ins get in only if slots remain.

  • Hours: 10:00–22:00, Tuesdays 10:00–17:00, last entry 30 minutes before closing. Exceptions: 3 November until 18:00, 27 November until 17:00.
  • Adult price: ¥2,800 weekdays, ¥3,000 weekends and holidays (online ¥2,600 / ¥2,800). Students ¥1,700–¥1,800, seniors 65+ ¥2,400–¥2,600, junior high and under free.
  • Also on: MAM Project 035 (Brie Ruais), MAM Screen 024 and the Mori Art Award 2026 exhibition (Katayama Mari), all included in the ticket.

Tokyo City View: the 52nd-floor observation deck

One floor below the museum, Tokyo City View is an indoor deck with a direct view of Tokyo Tower and, on clear days, Mt Fuji. It opens 10:00–22:00 daily, last entry 21:30, so you can stay well after dark.

Adult admission is ¥2,400 on-site or ¥2,200 online. From 13 November 2026 to 14 February 2027 the deck hosts an exhibition marking 80 years of Le Petit Prince in France. The Mori Art Museum plus Tokyo City View combo costs ¥4,900 on-site or ¥4,500 online for adults, valid 31 October 2026 to 14 February 2027 except 10–12 November and 18 December to 3 January.

Do the maths before buying. On a weekend, separate on-site tickets cost ¥5,400 against ¥4,900 for the combo, a saving of ¥500. On a weekday it is ¥5,200 against ¥4,900. The combo is non-refundable and cannot be combined with other discounts, including the art triangle stub.

National Art Center, Tokyo

NACT is the wave-shaped glass building on the Nogizaka side of Roppongi. It has no permanent collection; it is a 14,000 m² hall for touring shows and Japanese art societies’ annual exhibitions. Hours are 10:00–18:00, closed on Tuesdays (if a Tuesday is a holiday, it opens and closes the next weekday).

The headline show until 13 December 2026 is the Louvre Renaissance exhibition, with more than 50 works centred on Leonardo da Vinci. It costs ¥2,400 for adults and stays open until 20:00 on Fridays and Saturdays. From 28 October, Shojo Manga Infinity covers three pioneering girls’ manga artists. The building has three cafés and Brasserie Paul Bocuse Le Musée.

Suntory Museum of Art (Tokyo Midtown)

Inside Tokyo Midtown, the Suntory Museum of Art shows Japanese decorative art: lacquer, ceramics, glass, screens. The current show, from the Itsuo Art Museum in Osaka, pairs paintings by Yosa Buson and Goshun with tea utensils. It runs to 8 November 2026 with works rotated during the run; adults pay ¥1,700, university students ¥1,200, high school ¥1,000.

Opening hours are 10:00–18:00, Fridays until 20:00, closed Tuesdays. After 8 November the museum closes for a changeover until the Lotus Sutra exhibition opens on 12 December, so plan accordingly.

21_21 DESIGN SIGHT

21_21 DESIGN SIGHT, in the garden behind Tokyo Midtown, is a museum dedicated to design. Its current show, Learning from “Hōjōki”, asks architects and designers to build their own version of the three-metre-square hut described in a 13th-century essay. Adults pay ¥1,700, university students ¥800, high school ¥500.

Hours are 10:00–19:00, last entry 18:30, closed Tuesdays. Gallery 3 runs a separate short show, Possibilities of A Piece of Cloth, on A-POC ABLE Issey Miyake’s work with JAXA, from 21 October to 19 November 2026.

Which Roppongi dates should you avoid in November 2026?

November is busy with changeovers and maintenance. These are the dates that catch visitors out, all from the operators’ own notices.

Date (2026)What’s closed or limited
27 OctTokyo City View closed
28–30 Oct, 4–9 NovTokyo City View open, but the Mt Fuji side of the deck is restricted; adults pay ¥2,000 instead
Until 30 OctMori Art Museum closed for installation
4 Nov (Wed)NACT closed (open on Tuesday 3 Nov, a holiday)
10–12 NovTokyo City View closed
9 Nov – 11 DecSuntory Museum of Art between exhibitions
20 NovTokyo Midtown shorter hours
21–23 NovTokyo Midtown closed for disaster-resilience works, including 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT and the Suntory café

The Midtown closure comes from Tokyo Midtown’s notice. Roppongi Hills and NACT are not affected, so 21–23 November is still a good weekend for the Mori Art Museum and the Louvre show.

What is Roppongi Art Night 2026?

Roppongi Art Night returns as a full all-nighter on Saturday 31 October 2026. The core time runs from 17:00 to 06:00 on Sunday 1 November, with installations on view from 10:00 on 31 October until 22:00 on 1 November. The Arts Council Tokyo lists France as the focus country this year and says most programmes are free, although museum exhibitions still charge.

เดอะ Mori Art Museum stays open until 06:00 on the morning of 1 November for the opening of the Mariko Mori show, last entry 05:30. Tickets for 22:00–06:00 are sold only at the 3F counter in Mori Tower, not online, and nobody under 18 is admitted between 23:00 and 04:00, even with a parent. The Suntory Museum stays open until 21:00 and 21_21 until 22:00 that night.

Note that 31 October is also Halloween. Expect big crowds; our Tokyo Halloween 2026 guide covers any 2026 rules.

Is Azabudai Hills worth the walk from Roppongi?

Yes, if you are into food, design or teamLab; it is one of the newer things to do in Roppongi. Azabudai Hills is Mori Building’s newest complex, about a 7-minute walk from Roppongi-itchome Station or directly connected to Kamiyacho Station (Hibiya Line) at exit 5.

  • Azabudai Hills Gallery (Garden Plaza A, MB floor): from 31 October to 20 December 2026 it hosts the Kojima Productions 10th anniversary exhibition, centred on Death Stranding. Advance tickets ¥2,600, same-day ¥2,800, for visits from 4 November; 31 Oct – 3 Nov is a preview open only to ticket-and-merchandise packages from ¥5,000. Hours 12:00–20:00 on weekdays, 10:00–20:00 at weekends and holidays.

Is Roppongi safe at night?

Roppongi is generally safe to walk, but it is one of the Tokyo nightlife districts that foreign governments single out. The UK Foreign Office says police name Kabukicho, Roppongi, Shibuya and Ikebukuro as higher-risk areas at night, with “increased reports of drink spiking and credit card fraud”. Victims report waking with no memory and losses from hundreds to tens of thousands of pounds.

เดอะ Government of Canada lists Roppongi among the districts where spiked drinks are “particularly frequent”, and warns of foreigners being drugged and taken to ATMs. Overcharging disputes at bars and clubs have turned violent. The US State Department keeps Japan at Level 1, the lowest, but reminds visitors that dispatchers on 110 and 119 may not speak English.

What that means in practice, drawn from those three official pages:

  • Do not follow street touts into bars. They often misrepresent what is on offer.
  • See a menu with prices before you sit down, keep track of what you order and confirm any cover charge at the door.
  • Never leave a drink unattended or let a stranger hold it.
  • Watch your card when staff handle it, and avoid card readers that look unusual.
  • Emergency numbers: police 110, ambulance and fire 119.

Venues you chose yourself carry far less risk than a bar a tout walked you into. Of everything in this Roppongi guide, this is the part to reread before a night out. For recommendations, see our best bars in Tokyo.

Roppongi guide FAQ

What is the Roppongi art triangle?

Does the Mori Art Museum ticket include Tokyo City View?

No, not for the Mariko Mori show. They are separate tickets, or you can buy a combo for ¥4,900 on-site or ¥4,500 online for adults.

What day are Roppongi museums closed?

NACT, the Suntory Museum of Art and 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT close on Tuesdays. The Mori Art Museum opens daily but closes at 17:00 on Tuesdays.

Is Roppongi safe for tourists at night?

Mostly, but the UK, Canadian and US governments warn about drink spiking, overcharging and card fraud in Roppongi bars. Avoid touts, check prices first and never leave your drink.

When are the Roppongi Hills illuminations in 2026?

The Keyakizaka Illumination runs from 5 November to 25 December 2026, 17:00–22:00, and the Christmas market from 21 November.
