Booking and timed-entry tips

Book the last week early

Closing weeks are the busiest, and the Louvre show's last week needs timed tickets.

Use Friday nights

NMWA, TNM, NACT and the Orsay show stay open to 20:00 on Fridays, and the Mori is open to 22:00 most nights.

Mondays and Tuesdays

Most museums close on Mondays, but NACT closes on Tuesdays and the Mori closes early on Tuesdays.

Check the 24 November closure

After the 23 Nov holiday, TNM, NMWA, MOT, NACT, Artizon and the Tobikan all close on Tuesday 24 Nov 2026.

How do you book timed-entry tickets for art exhibitions in Tokyo?

Most museums use one of a few ticket platforms: etix (e-tix.jp), asoview, ART PASS or the museum’s own booking site. Tickets from these services are usually electronic, so you show them on your phone at the gate.

Book on the official link in our table, not a reseller. Dated tickets usually cannot be changed, though teamLab Planets allows changes up to two hours before entry.

Art exhibitions Tokyo FAQ

What are the best art exhibitions in Tokyo right now?

For autumn 2026 the big three are Turner at the National Museum of Western Art (to 21 Feb 2027), Mariko Mori at the Mori Art Museum (31 Oct 2026 to 28 Mar 2027) and the Musée d’Orsay show at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum (14 Nov 2026 to 28 Mar 2027).

Which Tokyo exhibitions close in December 2026?

Daitokuji at TNM and Tada Minami at MOT close on 6 Dec. The Louvre show at NACT, Synchronic Constellation at MOT and Albert Marquet at SOMPO close on 13 Dec, and Hiroshige at TNM closes on 20 Dec.

Do I need to book museum tickets in advance in Japan?

Not always, but it saves money and queues. The Chichu Art Museum, the Mori Art Museum and the final week of the Louvre show at NACT use date-and-time tickets.

How much do art exhibitions in Tokyo cost?

Adult tickets for the major 2026–27 shows cost ¥1,200 (Artizon, online) to ¥3,000 (Mori Art Museum, weekends). Junior high students and younger are usually free.

Is the Grutto Pass worth it?

Only if you visit many smaller museums. It costs ¥2,500, but at the big museums it mostly gives small discounts, such as ¥100 off the TNM collection.

Are Tokyo museums open on Mondays?

Most close on Mondays, except on national holidays. NACT closes on Tuesdays instead, and the Mori Art Museum is open every day.

When does teamLab Planets close for good?

teamLab Planets in Toyosu is scheduled to run until the end of 2027.

What are the best museums in Tokyo?

For a first visit, start in Ueno. The Tokyo National Museum has the deepest collection of Japanese art: entry to its collection is ¥1,000, and it stays open until 20:00 on Fridays and Saturdays (TNM). Also in Ueno, the National Museum of Western Art’s Le Corbusier main building has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2016 (NMWA), and its collection costs just ¥500 (NMWA). For the big touring shows, add the National Art Center Tokyo in Roppongi and the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum in Ueno. Both are listed above.

Which Tokyo museums are open late?

On Fridays and Saturdays, the Tokyo National Museum (TNM) and the National Museum of Western Art (NMWA) stay open until 20:00. The National Art Center Tokyo does too during Shojo Manga Infinity (NACT). Last entry is 30 minutes before closing. For something different after dark, Hyakudan Kaidan’s evening tickets cover 17:00–18:00 (official page).
