Most of the best Kobe beef restaurants in Kobe sit within a 10-minute walk of Sannomiya and Motomachi stations, and real, certified Kobe beef starts at about ¥3,000 for a lunch set (a Kobe beef steak rice bowl or hamburg steak). A proper teppanyaki steak starts at about ¥6,600 at lunch 및 ¥6,940 at dinner (Mouriya’s 120 g lean-cut A set). A prize-grade or Chateaubriand dinner can go past 40,000엔, depending on the cut and the grams.

We checked the official menus of 10 restaurants on the Kobe Beef Marketing & Distribution Promotion Association’s designated store list. Below: what each charges, the menu trick that makes “Kobe beef” look cheaper, how to check it’s real, and a half-day plan from Osaka or Kyoto.

How to spot real Kobe beef

Kobe beef certificate (神戸肉之証) with the Nojigiku chrysanthemum stamp and GI mark, used to spot real Kobe beef
Photo: Syced / Wikimedia Commons, CC0

Kobe beef is a brand, not a breed. It’s beef from purebred Tajima cattle, born, raised and processed in Hyogo Prefecture, that passes the association’s grading. Anything else, even excellent A5 wagyu, isn’t Kobe beef. Here’s what to check.

CheckWhat it meansWhere you’ll see it
Designated store listOnly restaurants and shops registered with the association may sell Kobe beef as such. Each has a registration number.Association store list (filter by Restaurant)
Bronze statuetteA small bronze Tajima cattle figure, a registered 3D trademark, is placed in designated stores. At the entrance or counter
Nojigiku stampA chrysanthemum mark (Hyogo’s prefectural flower) and a registered trademark. It’s stamped only on beef certified as Kobe beef.On the certified beef itself
Certificate + 10-digit IDEach certified carcass gets a Kobe Beef Certificate of Authenticity. Every cow in Japan has a 10-digit ID that shows its lineage, birthplace and farm.Shown by many restaurants. Ask to see it. Look the number up on the NLBC cattle ID search
Tajima lineagePurebred Tajima cattle, born in Hyogo, raised by a registered Hyogo farm, heifer or steer only, processed in Hyogo.Association bylaws
BMS 6+ and yield grade A or BJapan’s beef marbling score (BMS) runs from 1 to 12. Kobe beef needs BMS 6 or higher, yield grade A or B, a carcass of 499.9 kg or less, and fine, firm meat.So Kobe beef can be A4 또는 A5

What this means in practice: “A5” doesn’t mean Kobe, and Kobe isn’t always A5. On the Japan Meat Grading Association’s scale, marbling grade 5 is BMS 8–12 and grade 4 is BMS 5–7. A BMS 6 or 7 Kobe beef is graded A4 or B4, and that’s still the real thing.

Kobe beef is genuinely scarce. The association says it makes up less than about 0.2% of the beef eaten in Japan. That’s why a ¥3,000 “Kobe beef” steak dinner at a restaurant that isn’t on the association’s list should make you suspicious.

The menu trick: cheaper wagyu sold next to Kobe beef

Many famous Kobe restaurants sell two tiers of beef on the same menu:

  • Mouriya lists “Mouriya selected beef” (A5) right next to its Kobe beef. A 130 g A5 sirloin lunch is ¥9,820 in the selected beef and ¥21,780 in Kobe beef.
  • Misono has five lunch sets, but only one uses Kobe beef (¥23,100). The others use A4 or A5 wagyu from ¥8,250.
  • Bifteck Kawamura, Setsugekka and Steakhouse Oriental all sell Japanese Black wagyu (黒毛和牛) or domestic beef (国産牛) as cheaper options.

None of this is a scam, but if Kobe beef is the point, check that the line you order says 神戸牛 또는 神戸ビーフ.

All 10 are on the association’s designated store list, and we checked prices on 25 October 2026. Kisshokichi, Kurosawa and Yazawa belong to the same restaurant group, which runs many of the Kobe beef shops around Motomachi and Nankinmachi.

1. Mouriya Honten (Classic steakhouse)

The Lowdown: Kobe’s best-known steakhouse name, with several branches around Sannomiya. Its sets come with soup, salad, grilled vegetables, rice or bread, and coffee. The odd bit: the dinner “A set” is cheaper than lunch.

Where: 2-1-17 Shimoyamate-dori, Chuo-ku (Mouriya Building). JR Sannomiya west exit, about 5 min.

The Vibe: Old-school teppan counters and busy chefs. Open 11:00–22:00 (last order 21:00), with monthly closing days posted online.

Price: Kobe beef inside-round (uchimomo) lunch set from ¥8,020 for 120 g. Dinner A set from ¥6,940 for 120 g. A5 Kobe sirloin from ¥21,780 for 130 g (lunch) and A5 fillet up to ¥35,550 for 150 g (dinner B course). Tax included.

공식 링크: Mouriya Honten menu

💡 Japan Pro Tip: Want Kobe beef for under ¥10,000? Book the dinner A set with 120 g Kobe uchimomo or rump. The Royal Mouriya branch, a few minutes away, has the same Kobe beef prices, private teppan rooms and a smart-casual dress code. It closed for renovation from 15 June to 24 July 2026 and has since reopened.

2. Bifteck Kawamura Sannomiya Honten (Prize-winning teppanyaki)

The Lowdown: The place to go for the top end. Kawamura grades its Kobe beef on five levels, all the way up to beef from prize-winning cattle. It also does one of the cheapest Kobe beef lunches in town.

Where: 4-5-13 Kano-cho, Chuo-ku (Nouva Spirit 1F). JR Sannomiya west exit, about 2 min.

The Vibe: Polished teppanyaki counter. Lunch from 11:30 (last order 14:30), dinner from 17:00 (last order 21:00). Closed on some Mondays. Open Sundays.

Price: Kobe beef hamburg lunch ¥3,300. Kobe beef loin lunch from ¥18,700 for 100 g. Dinner courses from ¥19,800 for 100 g, rising to ¥30,800 per 100 g (¥46,200 for 180 g) for the top-prize grade. Tax included.

공식 링크: Bifteck Kawamura Sannomiya menu

💡 Japan Pro Tip: The ¥3,300 hamburg is 100% Kobe beef, made in limited numbers, and a smart way to taste it without the steak price. Kawamura also runs branches in Ginza, Roppongi and Osaka’s Kitashinchi.

3. Misono Kobe Honten (The original teppanyaki)

The Lowdown: Misono says it was the first restaurant in Japan to serve teppanyaki steak, after opening in Kobe in 1945. Today it’s a 7th and 8th-floor dining room right by the station. This is the historic choice rather than the cheap one.

Where: 1-1-2 Shimoyamate-dori, Chuo-ku (Misono Building 7F–8F). Hankyu Kobe-sannomiya west exit, about 2 min north.

The Vibe: Classic and a bit formal. Lunch 11:30–14:30 (last order 13:30), dinner 17:00–22:00 (last order 21:00). Closed 30 December to 3 January.

Price: Kobe beef lunch ¥23,100 (150 g loin). Kobe beef dinner courses from ¥25,300 (150 g loin) to ¥37,400. A 10% service charge applies at dinner only. Halal Kobe beef sirloin course ¥38,500.

공식 링크: Misono Kobe menu

💡 Japan Pro Tip: Misono is one of the few places with a halal Kobe beef course. Late cancellations cost 30% of the menu price (¥3,300 per person for a table-only booking).

4. Steakhouse Oriental, Kobe Meriken Park Oriental Hotel (Harbour-view teppanyaki)

Kobe Meriken Park Oriental Hotel on its pier in Kobe harbour, home of Steakhouse Oriental

The Lowdown: A 30-seat steakhouse on the hotel’s 14th (top) floor, looking over the port, the Harborland Ferris wheel and Kobe Airport. Book this one for the view, especially at sunset.

Where: 5-6 Hatoba-cho, Chuo-ku, in Meriken Park. About 15 min on foot from JR/Hanshin Motomachi, or take the free hotel shuttle from Sannomiya.

The Vibe: Hotel-smooth service and a view you’ll photograph. Lunch 11:30–15:00 (last order 14:30), dinner 17:00–21:30 (last order 20:30).

Price: Kobe beef steak lunch ¥19,800 (80 g loin). Kobe beef steak dinner ¥26,500 (80 g loin), Kiwami dinner ¥42,500. Kobe Chateaubriand “Ran” dinner ¥59,000. Prices include tax and service. Christmas and New Year menus cost more.

공식 링크: Steakhouse Oriental menu

💡 Japan Pro Tip: Not set on Kobe beef? The same course with Japanese Black wagyu is ¥8,000 at lunch and ¥15,000 at dinner, a cheaper way to get the view.

5. Setsugekka Honten (Teppanyaki with Kobe thigh lunch)

The Lowdown: An eighth-floor teppanyaki counter in the Sannomiya bar district, serving Kobe beef. Its 100 g Kobe thigh lunch is one of the best-value proper teppanyaki meals on this list.

Where: 1-9-3 Kitanagasa-dori, Chuo-ku (Rainbow Plaza 8F). JR Sannomiya west exit, about 5 min.

The Vibe: Intimate counter seating, date-night energy. Lunch 11:30–14:30 (last order 13:30). Dinner from 17:30 on weekdays and 17:00 at weekends (last order 20:00). Closes irregularly.

Price: Kobe beef lunch from ¥6,600 (100 g thigh). Kobe loin lunch from ¥14,300 (100 g). Dinner from ¥14,300 (80 g Kobe loin, early bookings only), Kotobuki course ¥29,700, Kobe Chateaubriand 160 g ¥37,400. Tax included, plus 10% service.

공식 링크: Setsugekka booking and courses

💡 Japan Pro Tip: The ¥14,300 dinner (the Hydrangea course) is only for bookings before 18:00, so eat early. It and the ¥6,600 thigh lunch are listed until 22 December. Most courses don’t allow children under 7.

6. Kobe Beef Kisshokichi Honten (Sukiyaki and shabu-shabu)

The Lowdown: If you want Kobe beef in a hotpot rather than a steak, this is your place. It’s on Motomachi-dori, the shopping arcade next to Nankinmachi (Chinatown).

Where: 2-4-14 Motomachi-dori, Chuo-ku. Motomachi Station, about 3 min.

The Vibe: Relaxed and family-friendly. Open daily 11:00–15:30 and 17:00–21:15 (last orders 14:45 and 20:45).

Price: Weekday Kobe beef lunch course (5 dishes) ¥3,190. Kobe beef sukiyaki or shabu-shabu ¥8,800 (110 g premium lean). Two-cut tasting course ¥11,000. Tax included. A 5% service charge applies at dinner.

공식 링크: Kisshokichi Honten

💡 Japan Pro Tip: Sukiyaki suits groups with mixed budgets, and on the tasting course you can switch to shabu-shabu on the day.

7. Kobe Beef Kurosawa (Steak rice bowls)

The Lowdown: The cheapest Kobe beef steak meal we found on an official menu. The signature is the Kobe Beef Steak Ju, rare-cooked Kobe beef laid over rice in a lacquered box.

Where: 1-6-20 Motomachi-dori, Chuo-ku (KSC Building 1F). Motomachi Station, about 3 min.

The Vibe: Quick, casual and good for a solo lunch. Open daily 11:00–21:30 (last order 21:00).

Price: Kobe Beef 29 Lunch Set (9 dishes, with a 60 g lean steak and a piece of Kobe beef sushi) ¥2,980. Kobe beef steak over rice with salad and soup ¥3,520. Steaks from ¥4,235 (lean, 110 g) to ¥37,180 (Chateaubriand, 110 g). Tax included, plus 5% service at dinner.

공식 링크: Kobe Beef Kurosawa

💡 Japan Pro Tip: The ¥2,980 set is online booking only, served 11:00–12:00, and not sold to walk-ins. Book it the night before and you’ve got the cheapest Kobe beef steak lunch in Kobe.

8. Kobe Beef Yakiniku Yazawa Nankinmachi (Yakiniku)

The Lowdown: Kobe beef you grill yourself, right by Nankinmachi. The sets let two people try rare cuts like misuji and kainomi without ordering a whole steak each.

Where: 1-1-1 Motomachi-dori, Chuo-ku (1F). Motomachi Station, about 3 min.

The Vibe: Lively, smoky and fun with friends. Open daily 11:00–21:00.

Price: Three rare Kobe cuts tasting ¥6,380 (1–2 people). The tongue, skirt and nakaochi set (¥4,620) isn’t labelled as Kobe beef. Six rare cuts tasting ¥10,450 (300 g, 1–2 people). Ribeye ¥6,600 per 100 g. Booking-only courses from ¥4,900 (9 dishes) to ¥15,000. Tax included.

공식 링크: Yazawa Nankinmachi

💡 Japan Pro Tip: Courses must be booked ahead and are limited to 90 minutes. At lunch, add rice, soup and kimchi to any set for ¥638.

9. Kobe Beef Kisshokichi Sannomiya (Casual Western)

The Lowdown: Kobe beef hamburg steaks, cutlets and steak sets in the basement of Sannomiya Center Plaza. It’s a good choice with kids or on a tight budget.

Where: 1-9-1 Sannomiya-cho, Chuo-ku (B1F). Hankyu Kobe-sannomiya west exit, about 3 min.

The Vibe: Casual and fast, open all day. Daily 11:00–21:00 (last order 20:30).

Price: Kobe beef double hamburg set ¥2,750 at lunch and ¥3,740 at dinner. Weekday Kobe beef lunch course ¥3,900. Steaks from ¥4,235 (lean, 110 g). Tax included, plus 5% service at dinner.

공식 링크: Kisshokichi Sannomiya

💡 Japan Pro Tip: It’s open all afternoon, so it works for a late lunch after Kitano. The weekday “adult kids plate” (¥2,970) pairs a 40 g Kobe steak with a hamburg.

10. Steak House Ikuta (Steak counter)

The Lowdown: A smaller, quieter steak counter north of the station that prices Kobe beef by weight. The lean steaks are about as cheap as Kobe beef steak gets.

Where: 2-10-21 Nakayamate-dori, Chuo-ku (Shinno Dai-ni Building 2F). About 8 min north of Sannomiya Station.

The Vibe: Neighbourhood steakhouse rather than tourist stop. Lunch 12:00–15:00 (last order 14:00), dinner 17:00–22:00 (last food order 20:30). Closes irregularly.

Price: Kobe beef lean steak ¥3,080 (100 g), served at lunch with mini soup, salad and rice or bread. A5 sirloin ¥12,760 (100 g). A5 Chateaubriand ¥19,800 (100 g). At dinner, add a set (soup, salad, rice) from ¥1,100. Tax included.

공식 링크: Steak House Ikuta (Japanese)

💡 Japan Pro Tip: Book through the Hot Pepper button on its website or call 078-891-7886. If you’re hiking up to Kitano, it’s on the way.

What to order: sirloin vs fillet, teppanyaki vs steak

Photo: Dani Chaboya / Wikimedia Commons, CC BY 4.0
  • Sirloin (サーロイン) or loin (ロース): the most marbled and the richest. It’s the classic choice, but it’s very rich. 100–130 g is plenty for most people.
  • Fillet (フィレ / ヒレ) or Chateaubriand: leaner, softer and the most expensive. At Kisshokichi and Kurosawa, 110 g of fillet is ¥31,680 against ¥17,380 for sirloin.
  • Lean cuts (赤身, uchimomo, rump): less fat, more beefy flavour, and the cheapest way to eat a Kobe beef steak (¥3,080–¥8,050).
  • Teppanyaki vs steakhouse: teppanyaki (a chef cooking in front of you on an iron griddle) costs more and takes longer; rice bowls, hamburg and yakiniku are cheaper.
  • Lunch vs dinner: lunch is usually cheaper, except at Mouriya (see the FAQ below).

Kobe beef restaurants in Kobe FAQ

Is Kobe beef worth it?

Yes, at least once, and Kobe is the place to do it. The ¥3,000–¥7,000 options (steak rice bowl, hamburg, 100 g thigh at teppanyaki) are the best value, and sirloin is very rich, so don’t over-order.

How much does Kobe beef cost in Kobe in 2026?

On official menus checked on 25 October 2026: ¥2,750–¥3,900 for a casual Kobe beef lunch (hamburg, rice bowl, set lunch). ¥6,600–¥30,800 for a teppanyaki lunch. ¥6,940–¥59,000 for a steak or teppanyaki dinner. À la carte sirloin works out at about ¥12,800–¥17,000 per 100 g, and top-prize grade reaches ¥30,800 per 100 g at Bifteck Kawamura.

Is Kobe beef cheaper at lunch or dinner?

Usually lunch, because most service charges apply only at dinner. Mouriya is the exception: its dinner A set (¥6,940 for 120 g) beats the lunch set (¥8,020).

Do I need to book a Kobe beef restaurant?

For teppanyaki, yes, especially for weekend dinners. The cheapest deals, like Kurosawa’s ¥2,980 set and Setsugekka’s early dinner, are booking-only. Our 일본 식당 예약 가이드 explains no-show fees and phone-only places.

How can I tell if it’s real Kobe beef?

Use the checks above: the association’s designated store list, the bronze statuette, 神戸牛 or 神戸ビーフ on the menu, and the cow’s 10-digit ID. “Wagyu” or “A5” on its own is not Kobe beef.

Is there a dress code for Kobe beef restaurants?

Mostly smart casual, which both Mouriya Honten and Royal Mouriya state. Misono, Oriental and Setsugekka feel more formal; Kurosawa, Kisshokichi and Yazawa are fine in everyday clothes.

Where is Kobe beef near Sannomiya Station?

Bifteck Kawamura and Misono (2 min), Kisshokichi Sannomiya (3 min), and Mouriya Honten and Setsugekka (5 min). Kurosawa, Kisshokichi Honten and Yazawa are 3 minutes from Motomachi, one stop west.
