This Ikebukuro guide starts with the one thing that confuses everyone: Seibu department store is on the east side of the station and Tobu is on the west. Get that straight and Ikebukuro splits into three easy outings: Sunshine City and the anime shops to the east, parks, theatres and a Frank Lloyd Wright school to the west, and a ¥168 tram ride to the old temple streets of Zoshigaya.

This Ikebukuro guide is for first-timers and repeat visitors alike. Ikebukuro is a JR Yamanote Line hub eight minutes north of Shinjuku. It is louder and cheaper than Shibuya, and the quiet parts are closer than you would think. Below are the 2026 prices, hours and the exits to use for each.

How do the Ikebukuro exits work?

Ikebukuro Station is served by JR (Yamanote, Saikyo and Shonan-Shinjuku lines), the Tobu Tojo Line, the Seibu Ikebukuro Line and three Tokyo Metro lines (Marunouchi, Yurakucho and Fukutoshin), according to GO TOKYO, the city’s official tourism site. Two of those are private railways with their own department stores, and the stores are not where you would guess.

Toshima City’s own visitor guide puts Seibu and PARCO at the East Exit, and Tobu and LUMINE at the West Exit. So the store whose name contains “west” (sei) is on the east. Navigate by exit signs, not store names.

The Seibu building has changed. Yodobashi Holdings bought it in 2023, and the Yodobashi Ikebukuro electronics store opened on 30 June 2026 across seven floors (B1–6F), open 9:30–22:00. Seibu Ikebukuro is still trading in the same building while it goes through its first full renovation. For what each department store sells, see our Tokyo department stores guide; for tax-free shopping, read our 日本退税指南.

Sunshine City: which Ikebukuro ticket is worth it?

Sunshine City is the big complex at the end of Sunshine 60-dori, about 8 minutes on foot from Ikebukuro Station exit 35, or 3 minutes from Higashi-Ikebukuro exits 6 and 7. Shops open 10:00–20:00 and restaurants 11:00–22:00, with no fixed closing days. Inside are four paid attractions and one very popular free shop, and it is the anchor of most things to do in Ikebukuro.

Sunshine Aquarium

The aquarium sits on top of the World Import Mart building. Its best part is outdoors: the Marine Garden, where the “Penguin in the sky” tank lets African penguins swim over the city skyline, and sea lions pass overhead in the Sunshine Aqua Ring. Indoors, two floors cover rivers and lakes (2F) and the open ocean (1F).

Adults (high school and over) pay ¥2,600–2,800, children ¥1,300–1,400 and pre-schoolers from age 4 ¥800–900, depending on the date, says the 官方门票页面. Weekend and holiday entry needs an advance reservation. The Marine Garden gets light effects after sunset, so a late visit in winter, when it is dark by 17:00, works well. For how it compares with Japan’s giants, see our biggest aquariums in Japan.

Sunshine 60 Observatory Tenbou-Park

The observatory is on the 60th floor, 251 m above sea level, with a 360-degree view. The official price list has four tiers: ¥700 adult / ¥500 child on weekdays, ¥900 / ¥600 on weekends, holidays and busy days, and ¥1,200 / ¥800 at peak times. Children below primary school age go free. Winter air is clearer, and sunset falls well before closing time, so a late-afternoon ticket gets you both daylight and night views.

NAMJATOWN and the planetarium

NAMJATOWN is Bandai Namco’s indoor theme park on the 2nd floor of the World Import Mart. 入场 is ¥1,200 for adults and ¥800 for children aged 4–12, but rides cost extra (NAMJA Coins, ¥200 each). The Passport, from ¥3,700, covers attractions; the Night Passport from 17:00 starts at ¥2,000. Konica Minolta Planetarium Manten is also in the complex; prices change with each programme, so check before you go.

Otome Road, Animate and the Pokémon Center

我们的 anime spots in Tokyo guide covers these in depth, so here is only what you need to plan the route. The Animate Ikebukuro flagship is at 1-20-7 Higashi-Ikebukuro, open 10:00–21:00. Otome Road, the strip of shops for female fans beside Sunshine City, is a few minutes further east.

另外, 宝可梦中心 Mega Tokyo and Pikachu Sweets share a space on the 2nd floor of Alpa in Sunshine City, open 10:00–20:00. It is about 4 minutes from the Toden’s Higashi-Ikebukuro 4-chome stop, which makes it a good first or last stop on the tram day below. GO TOKYO also lists an Evangelion Store in the same area.

What are the best things to do in Ikebukuro on the west side?

The West Exit is calmer than the east, and it has the best architecture in this Ikebukuro guide. Everything below is within about 10 minutes on foot of Tobu.

Ikebukuro Nishiguchi Park and the Global Ring

The park in front of the West Exit is the “West Gate Park” of Ira Ishida’s crime novels and the 2000 TBS drama Ikebukuro West Gate Park. In 2019 it was rebuilt with the Global Ring, a steel ring over an outdoor stage, plus a small wooden café. It hosts free concerts and events; Toshima City’s tourist information centre is nearby. The Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre stands on the park’s edge.

Jiyu Gakuen Myonichikan

Myonichikan is a school building designed by Frank Lloyd Wright for Jiyu Gakuen, founded in 1921, and it is a national Important Cultural Property. It is about 5 minutes from Ikebukuro Station, at 2-31-3 Nishi-Ikebukuro. The official tour page gives these 2026 terms:

  • Open 10:00–16:00 (last entry 15:30); closed Mondays (Tuesday if Monday is a holiday), New Year and some other days.
  • Building tour ¥500; tour with coffee ¥1,000 (price since October 2025); junior high students and younger free.
  • Night opening on the third Friday of each month, 18:00–21:00, ¥1,200 with an alcoholic drink; no booking needed.

Rikkyo University

Rikkyo’s red-brick campus is just west of the station. Its Main Building, Morris Hall, dates from 1919 and is a Tokyo Metropolitan-Nominated Historical Building, says the university. The former house of crime writer Edogawa Rampo, inside the campus, is open free on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, 10:30–16:00, except public holidays. Groups of 10 or more must book.

How do you ride the Toden tram to Zoshigaya?

The Toden Arakawa Line, branded the Tokyo Sakura Tram, is a city-run streetcar operated by Toei Transportation. It runs 12.2 km between Minowabashi and Waseda with 30 stops, and three of them serve this Ikebukuro guide: Higashi-Ikebukuro 4-chome (for Sunshine City), Toden Zoshigaya (for the cemetery) and Kishibojinmae (for the Kishimojin temple).

Zoshigaya Kishimojin-do

This temple to Kishimojin, the goddess of safe childbirth and child-rearing, has a main hall built in 1664 and a worship hall added in 1700. It became a national Important Cultural Property on 25 July 2016. It is about 5 minutes from Kishibojinmae stop, or a short walk from Zoshigaya Station on the Fukutoshin Line.

In the grounds, Kamikawaguchiya is a tiny sweet shop that has traded since 1781, and a ginkgo tree is estimated to be around 700 years old. Entry to the grounds is free.

Zoshigaya Cemetery

This large, leafy cemetery is about 2 minutes from Toden Zoshigaya stop, or 20 minutes on foot from the East Exit. Toshima City’s cemetery map lists 27 notable graves with plot numbers, including:

  • Natsume Soseki, novelist: plot 1-14-1-3
  • Lafcadio Hearn (Koizumi Yakumo), writer: plot 1-1-8-35
  • Nagai Kafu, writer: plot 1-1-7-3
  • Takehisa Yumeji, painter: plot 1-8-9-32
  • John Manjiro, the first Japanese person to travel to America: plot 1-15-19-1

Pick up a map at the Zoshigaya Information Office in the cemetery, open 10:30–16:30, closed Thursdays (open on holidays) and over the year-end. Nearby, the Zoshigaya Missionary House, the former home of a missionary named McCaleb, is a Tokyo Metropolitan cultural property with free entry, but it opens on fixed days only, so check Toshima City’s calendar or call 03-3985-4081 first.

Is Mejiro worth the detour?

Mejiro is the next Yamanote Line station south, and it is one of the quietest stops on the loop. The reason to go is Mejiro Garden, a small Japanese garden with a pond and a teahouse, about 5 minutes from JR Mejiro or 15 minutes on foot from Ikebukuro.

Entry is free in normal hours (9:00–17:00), and it closes on the second and fourth Mondays. In autumn it holds a paid evening light-up. The garden’s site lists a 2026 light-up and has moved its November and December closing days around it (closed 16 November and 7 December 2026, for example). The 2025 edition ran from 22 November to 7 December, 17:30–21:00, for ¥300; check the site for the 2026 times and price.

What is Ikebukuro like in late autumn and winter 2026–27?

  • Late November to early December: Mejiro Garden’s autumn light-up, and the best weather for the tram and cemetery walk.
  • December to February: sunset comes before 17:00, so the aquarium’s rooftop and the observatory both turn into night views well before dinner.
  • 新年: Myonichikan closes for the New Year holidays, and the Zoshigaya Information Office closes over the year-end. Sunshine City has no fixed closing days.
  • Observatory pricing: holiday periods fall in the busy or peak tiers (¥900–1,200), so a weekday visit saves up to ¥500.

出发前须知

Seibu is east

Seibu department store is at the East Exit and Tobu at the West Exit. Follow exit signs, not store names.

Sunshine Aquarium needs an advance reservation on weekends, holidays and set busy days.

Tram maths

A Toden 1Day Pass (¥400) beats IC fares from your third ride.

IKEBUS takes no coins

The red electric IKEBUS loop costs ¥200 (day pass ¥500); cash is ¥1,000 notes only, or pay by QR apps.

周一

Myonichikan is closed on Mondays; the Rampo house is open Mon/Wed/Fri. Plan the west side around that.

On a wet day, Sunshine City alone can fill an afternoon; our 东京雨天指南 has more ideas.
