Things to Do in Akihabara (2026): Station Guide to Electric Town, Shops, Maid Cafés and Food

The best things to do in Akihabara are the hobby towers on Chuo-dori (Radio Kaikan, Mandarake, Super Potato), the 500-machine Gashapon Department Store, a maid café, Kanda Myojin Shrine and the craft and food arcades built under the JR tracks. The trick is the station: leave by the Electric Town gate on the west side and you are on the main street in one minute; leave by the wrong gate and you will spend ten minutes walking round the station.

This Akihabara station guide is arranged by side of the tracks, not as a ranking. Each zone lists what is there, verified hours and prices, and one practical note. Anime fans heading on to Nakano, Ikebukuro or the Ghibli Museum should read our separate 最好的东京动漫景点 guide; this one stays inside Akihabara.

Which Akihabara station exit should you use?

Use the JR Electric Town gate (Denki-gai-guchi). Electric Town sits west of the JR station, so this is the only gate that drops you straight onto the shopping streets. The Central gate, Showa-dori gate and Atre 1 gate all put you on the east side.

Gate or stationSide最适合买

Tokyo Metro Ginza Line, SuehirochoNorth-westGachapon Kaikan, Super Potato end, the backstreets
Toei Shinjuku Line, IwamotochoSouth-eastArriving from Shinjuku without changing to JR

Came out on the east side by mistake? Use the ground-level east–west free passage just south of the Central gate: turn right after the Central ticket gates, walk past the ticket machines to the escalator marked “AKIBA TRIM”, and the passage runs along its left side to the Electric Town side. It is badly signposted, so remember “Central gate, then right”.

The other shortcut is the road underpass. From the Central exit, walk north up the street in front of Yodobashi Camera and take the low road under the JR tracks (there is a 2.8 m height limit sign); it comes out by Sofmap on Chuo-dori. Lifts: the Showa-dori gate needs three lifts in sequence to reach the Yamanote platforms, so step-free travellers should use the Electric Town or Central gate.

Electric Town or Chuo-dori: what is the difference?

Electric Town is the whole district west of the station in Sotokanda; Chuo-dori is its spine. The big hobby buildings and arcades face Chuo-dori. The small electronics parts stalls, retro game shops and maid cafés sit one or two blocks west, on the backstreets locals call Ura-Akiba.

A simple way to read the map: the station is the east edge. Chuo-dori runs north from the Manseibashi bridge over the Kanda River towards Suehirocho. Kanda Myojin is up the hill to the west, and the arcades under the tracks run north towards Okachimachi.

When is Akihabara pedestrian paradise on Sunday?

Every Sunday from 13:00 to 17:00, Chuo-dori closes to cars and becomes a pedestrian zone (hokosha tengoku). The Akihabara Electric Town Organization lists it as “every Sunday, 13:00–17:00, cancelled in bad weather” and posts a weekly notice on akiba.or.jp. Bicycles must be pushed, not ridden.

The next dates are Sunday 25 October and Sunday 1 November 2026. The Akihabara Omotenashi Fair, a shop discount campaign, runs until 25 October 2026.

Things to do in Akihabara on Chuo-dori: the big hobby and gacha buildings

These are the buildings most visitors come for. Opening times shape the order you visit them: most open between 10:00 and 12:00 and close around 20:00, but gacha and arcades run to 23:00 or later.

Gashapon Department Store and Gashapon Bandai Official Shop

Around 500 capsule-toy machines on the 4th floor of namco Akihabara (1-15-9 Sotokanda), a minute from the station. Open 10:00–23:00 daily; capsules cost ¥100–¥500. Go after 20:00 when it is quieter, and carry ¥100 coins.

Akihabara Radio Kaikan

Ten floors of hobby shops at 1-15-16 Sotokanda, including AmiAmi, K-Books, Volks and Kaiyodo’s Hobby Lobby. Entry is free. Work top to bottom, and remember most shops close at 20:00.

GiGO arcades

Three arcades on and around Chuo-dori: GiGO 2 (1-15-1 Sotokanda), GiGO 3 (1-11-11) and GiGO 5 (1-10-1). All open 10:00–23:30 daily. GiGO 3 has a collaboration café on 6F–7F with last orders at 19:40.

Animate Akihabara

The anime goods chain at 4-3-1 Sotokanda. Buildings 1 and 2 open 10:00–21:00; the ANNEX, with a capsule floor on B1–1F, opens 10:00–21:00 on weekdays and 10:00–20:00 at weekends and on holidays. Tax-free is available.

Backstreets: retro games, second-hand figures and parts stalls

One block west of Chuo-dori, the buildings get narrower and the stock gets older. This is where collectors spend their money.

Mandarake opens later than everything else, so do it after lunch. Super Potato and the parts stalls are the classic Electric Town experience: small shops with stock piled to the ceiling. Ask before photographing shelves.

How do maid cafés in Akihabara work, and what do they cost?

You pay an hourly admission fee plus at least one drink or set. At @home cafe, the largest chain, admission is ¥850 per hour for adults, ¥600 for university students and over-60s, ¥400 for high school and junior high students, and free for primary-school age and under. Tax (10%) is included.

@home cafe itemPrice (2026, tax incl.)
Admission, adult (1 hour)¥850
Soft drink¥750–¥930
Omurice or curry¥1,280
Drink set / Food set / Full set¥1,750 / ¥2,900 / ¥3,930
Cheki photo with a maid (original / large)¥900 / ¥1,100

So a realistic visit costs ¥2,600–¥4,800 per adult with a set and one photo, per @home cafe’s official menu page. The time limit is one hour; if the café is quiet you can ask to extend, which charges admission again.

Branches are in the Mitsuwa Building (1-11-4 Sotokanda), Akiba Cultures Zone (1-7-6) and Don Quijote Akihabara 5F (4-3-3); hours are 11:00–22:00 on weekdays and 10:00–22:00 at weekends and on holidays.

  • Never photograph maids or the interior on your own phone. Photos are the paid cheki.
  • Ignore street touts handing out flyers on Chuo-dori. @home says it does not tout, and touting cafés are where surprise charges happen.
  • Read the price board or menu before you sit down, and check whether a table charge or time limit applies.
  • Do not touch staff or ask for personal contact details.

Things to do in Akihabara under the tracks: 2k540, CHABARA and mAAch ecute

JR has turned the arches under its viaducts into three very different places. All three work for visitors who are not into anime at all, and all three are quieter than Chuo-dori at weekends.

2k540 AKI-OKA ARTISAN

About 50 workshops, studios and small shops under the Yamanote Line between Akihabara and Okachimachi, selling leather, woodwork and jewellery made on site. The name is the distance from Tokyo Station: 2.54 km. Open 11:00–19:00, closed Wednesdays, free entry (5-9 Ueno, Taito City; 4 minutes from Okachimachi South exit).

CHABARA and Nippon Department Store Shokuhinkan

A food hall under the tracks just north of the Electric Town gate, with about 4,000 regional products from across Japan: sauces, pickles, sweets, sake and the “rice companions” corner. Open 11:00–20:00 (8-2 Kanda Neribeicho). It closes on New Year’s Day and the first Wednesday of June and November, which in 2026 means Wednesday 4 November.

mAAch ecute Kanda Manseibashi

A 1912 brick station, closed in 1943, rebuilt as shops and cafés, with a glass deck between the Chuo Line tracks. The deck is open 11:00–22:30 (Sundays and holidays to 20:30), at 1-25-4 Kanda Sudacho, 4 minutes south of the Electric Town gate, with Hitachino Brewing Lab inside. It closes one day a month; the next are Monday 9 November and Thursday 31 December 2026.

Is Kanda Myojin worth the walk from Akihabara?

Yes, and it is only 7 minutes uphill from the Electric Town gate. Kanda Myojin (2-16-2 Sotokanda) was founded in 730, and Love Live! fans know it from the series. Entry to the grounds is free.

The shrine museum costs ¥500 for adults and ¥300 for students, free for junior-high age and under. It opens 9:00–16:00 (last entry 15:45) and closes on Thursdays. Kumade rake charm reservations opened on 13 October 2026, and online applications for a New Year 2027 inner-hall prayer close at 17:00 on Friday 27 November 2026; details are on kandamyoujin.or.jp.

How does tax-free shopping work in Akihabara from November 2026?

From 1 November 2026, you pay the full tax-inclusive price at the till and get the 10% consumption tax back later, after customs confirms the goods are leaving Japan. Purchases until 31 October 2026 follow the old instant tax-free system. The ¥5,000 minimum (before tax, one shop, one day) stays.

  • Carry your physical passport. Stores scan it at purchase.
  • Big stores (Yodobashi Akiba, Animate, Don Quijote) handle tax-free; small backstreet stalls and second-hand shops often do not. Ask before you pay.
  • Do not open consumables (snacks, cosmetics) in Japan; they are not eligible if used here.
  • Complete the customs check at a tax-free terminal at your departure airport or port within 90 days of purchase, per Japan Customs.

我们的 日本退税指南 walks through the airport step in detail.

East side: Yodobashi Akiba and electronics

Yodobashi Akiba (1-1 Kanda Hanaoka-cho) is the giant electronics store a minute from the Central gate. Cameras, lenses, rice cookers, gacha and toys are on separate floors, and it handles tax-free. Ask for “international model” or check voltage and plug before buying appliances.

Where to eat in Akihabara

Food is the weak spot among the things to do in Akihabara, but it is easy to fix if you know where to look.

Akihabara has plenty of quick chains but few memorable meals inside Electric Town. The best food is five to ten minutes south, in old Kanda.

One thing has changed this year: the AKIBA_ICHI restaurant zone in the Akihabara UDX building closed on 23 January 2026 for a full rebuild. According to UDX, the new zone is planned for winter 2026 with details to follow, so do not plan dinner there yet.

Starting from Tokyo Station, the Yamanote or Keihin-Tohoku Line takes 4 minutes. Avoid Wednesdays if 2k540 is on your list, and Thursdays if you want the Kanda Myojin museum.

What are the rules and etiquette in Akihabara?

  • Ask before photographing maids or costumed flyer staff; posed photos are paid.
  • Respect no-photo signs in hobby shops and keep out of 18+ sections.
  • Take rubbish with you. Street bins are rare; gacha halls have capsule recycling boxes.
  • Do not eat while walking in packed shops.
