Shibuya Marui is being rebuilt as Japan’s first full-scale wooden commercial building, on the Jinnan Street site where the old store stood until 2022. Foster + Partners designed it, roughly 60% of the structure is timber, and it has not opened yet.

This page tracks what is actually confirmed: the design, the size, the location and the opening status as of today. It also flags the things being reported elsewhere without a source, the rooftop in particular.

Status as of today

  • Open? No. The Jinnan site is still closed for rebuilding.
  • Opening date: Not announced. Marui has said 2026 without naming a month.
  • Old store closed: 28 August 2022
  • Address: 1-22-6 Jinnan, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo 150-0041
  • From Shibuya Station: about 4 minutes on foot from the Hachiko exit, up Koen-dori

💡 日本提示: Anyone giving you a specific opening date is guessing. Marui has published a year and nothing more, and the summer window has already passed.

What Shibuya Marui is becoming

The old store closed in August 2022 after decades on Jinnan Street. What is going up is not a refurbishment, it is a different kind of building.

Marui Group is rebuilding it as Japan’s first full-scale wooden commercial facility, designed by Foster + Partners. Around 60% of the structure uses timber, with a steel core retained for earthquake resistance. Marui’s own announcement puts the saving at about 2,000 tonnes of CO₂ against a conventional build.

One detail that gets missed in most coverage: the project uses Tama-sourced timber, wood grown in western Tokyo. A Tokyo department store built substantially from Tokyo trees is a genuinely unusual thing, and it is the part of the story worth caring about.

The beams are intended to stay exposed inside, so the structure reads as timber rather than being hidden behind finished walls.

Floor plan: what is confirmed

Nine floors above ground, two below, with roughly 2,800 m² of sales floor. That makes it noticeably smaller than Shibuya’s other department stores, closer to an hour’s browse than an afternoon’s.

Marui has not published a final tenant list. What has been signalled publicly is food and drink from B2F to 1F, retail with a stated sustainability focus from 2F to 6F, and upper levels and rooftop from 7F.

Treat any floor-by-floor tenant guide you read elsewhere as speculation. Marui has not confirmed which brands are going in, and this page will be updated when they do.

The rooftop: what is known and what is not

The rooftop is the most discussed feature of the project and it is also where the least is confirmed.

The published designs show a planted rooftop level. What has not been officially confirmed is whether it will be free to enter, whether it will be open to non-shoppers, or what its hours will be. Several English language articles state confidently that it will be a free observation deck. There is no official Marui source for that, so we are not repeating it as fact.

Miyashita Park, an existing elevated green deck above the streets of Shibuya

What can be said is that the building is nine storeys, so any rooftop here sits far below Shibuya Sky at around 230 metres. If it does open to the public, the appeal would be the close, street level angle on Scramble Crossing rather than a skyline panorama. A different photograph, not a cheaper version of the same one.

💡 日本提示: If a free Shibuya viewpoint is what you want today, Shibuya Station’s own walkways and the upper floors of nearby retail buildings give you the crossing from above at no cost. The Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building in Shinjuku remains the best genuinely free skyline view in the city.

Where it is

The address is 1-22-6 Jinnan, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo 150-0041, the former Shibuya Marui site, beside Shibuya MODI. From Shibuya Station it is about four minutes on foot from the Hachiko exit, up Koen-dori.

Shibuya MODI, immediately next door, has stayed open throughout the rebuild, so the block is not a construction dead zone.

What to do in Shibuya while you wait

Since you cannot go in yet, here is the honest version of what that corner of Shibuya offers right now.

Shibuya MODI is open next door and is the closest thing to the old Marui’s function. 宫下公园 is the rooftop park and food street about eight minutes away, which already does the elevated green space above Shibuya idea. Koen-dori is the street the new building fronts, with the quieter cafes most visitors walk past on their way to the crossing. And Shibuya Sky is the view that actually exists today, though you should book ahead because sunset slots sell out.

我们的 Shibuya guide covers the backstreets between these, which is where the neighbourhood actually differs from its photographs, and the Tokyo bucket list picks up the rest of the city in walkable chunks. If you are building a trip around this, the best time to visit Japan is worth reading first.

We update this page

This article is maintained rather than published and forgotten. When Marui announces an opening date, a tenant list or rooftop access terms, this page changes and the status line at the top is re-dated.
