Japan’s ski season runs from late October to mid-May. The first resorts open on man-made snow near Tokyo in late October, Hokkaido opens in late November, most of Honshu follows in December, and a handful keep skiing through Golden Week, with Kagura in Niigata open until 16 May 2027. The deep powder that made “JAPOW” famous falls mainly in January and February.
This guide to the Japan ski season lists the opening and closing dates of 36 resorts for 2026–27, from Niseko and Furano to Hakuba, Myoko and Zao, with lift prices, access and night skiing. 25 resorts have published their 2026–27 dates; for the rest we show last season’s dates, clearly labelled, until the new ones are out.

Opening day (23 Oct 2026) usually has giveaways. Expect thin, man-made cover and crowds, and treat it as a tune-up day rather than a powder trip.

Japan ski resort closing dates, 2026–27
Closing dates matter as much as opening ones if you plan a spring trip. Resorts usually close when the snow runs out or at the end of Golden Week, whichever comes first.
For summer skiing, Gassan in Yamagata does the opposite of everywhere else: it is buried in winter, opens in April and usually runs into July. Spring skiing is cheaper (many resorts cut lift prices from mid-March), sunnier and quieter, but the snow is heavy and wet by afternoon, so ski early.
Japan ski resorts by region: dates, prices and night skiing
Ticket prices are adult one-day prices from each resort’s 2026–27 price list where published, otherwise 2025–26; most resorts charge more in the peak (late December to February) and less in early and spring season. Check each card for the details.

Which region should you pick for your ski season in Japan?
Where you go matters more than exactly when, because each region has its own ski season, snow and character. Use this as a quick guide before you look at the resort cards.
Hokkaido (Niseko, Furano, Rusutsu, Kiroro, Tomamu): the driest, deepest powder and the longest reliable season, from late November into April or Golden Week. Fly to New Chitose (Sapporo); Niseko is about 2 to 2.5 hours by bus. Best for powder skiers and families who want ski-in, ski-out lodging.
Hakuba Valley (Nagano): the biggest mountains and the most varied terrain on Honshu, with ten resorts on one pass. About 3 hours from Tokyo by Shinkansen to Nagano and an express bus. Best for strong skiers and groups who want après-ski and choice.
Nozawa Onsen and Shiga Kogen (Nagano): Nozawa pairs good snow with a traditional hot-spring village; Shiga Kogen’s altitude gives one of the longest seasons on Honshu. Best for skiers who want culture with their skiing, or spring snow.
Yuzawa (Niigata): Naeba, Kagura and GALA Yuzawa are 75 minutes from Tokyo by Shinkansen, so a ski day trip from Tokyo is easy (see our ski day trip from Tokyo guide). Kagura has the latest close of the major resorts.
Myoko (Niigata): some of the heaviest snowfall in Japan, fewer foreign visitors than Hakuba, and onsen villages at the base. Best for powder on a budget.
Tohoku (Zao, APPI, Hakkoda): quieter slopes, the famous “snow monsters” (frost-covered trees) at Zao, and backcountry at Hakkoda. Best for adventurous skiers who want to avoid crowds.
Near Tokyo (Karuizawa, Mt Fuji area): small, snow-made slopes that open first and close in March. Best for beginners, a first ski day of the season, or a day out with a view of Mt Fuji.
How to plan around the Japan ski season
Book the dates first, then the resort. Peak weeks (Christmas to New Year, Lunar New Year and the February school holidays in Asia and Australia) fill early in Niseko and Hakuba, while early December, mid-January and March are cheaper and quieter. If your trip is in early December, pick a high or northern resort with a good track record of opening on time, such as Sapporo Teine, Niseko or Shiga Kogen, and avoid relying on a single low-altitude resort.
Skiing is only part of a Japan winter: our winter in Japan guide covers the best non-ski destinations, and our best onsen towns pair well with a ski trip.
If you are coming in spring, check the closing date on the card before you book: many resorts close at the end of March, but the ones listed above stay open to Golden Week. Spring snow is best in the morning, so plan to ski early and spend the afternoon in an onsen.
Season changes for 2026–27 that most guides miss
Mt.T (formerly Tanigawadake Tenjindaira): from 9 January to 28 February only a ¥14,000 “Ultimate” day pass is sold, capped at 150 people a day and by reservation only. The season now ends on 4 April, not in May as it used to.
GALA Yuzawa: the South area is closed for the whole season.
Kagura: open until 16 May 2027 in the Kagura and Mitsumata areas, the latest close of any resort on this list.
Karuizawa Prince: opens on 31 October with about 800 m of snow-made runs; all 14 courses are open only from early January.
Niseko Grand Hirafu: its single-resort 2026–27 lift prices were still unpublished in mid-October, so compare the Hanazono & Hirafu ticket with the All-Mountain pass.

Blackout dates at some resorts
There is no official all-Japan “JAPOW pass”. If you plan to ski several regions, the Ikon Pass covers the widest spread of Japanese resorts in 2026–27.
Ski Japan smarter
Book Christmas to February early
Peak weeks in Niseko and Hakuba sell out by early autumn. Book lodging first, then flights.
Avoid Lunar New Year week
Lunar New Year falls on 6 February 2027. Hokkaido and Hakuba are at their busiest that week.
Send your bags
Use takkyubin luggage delivery from the airport to your hotel and take the train with just a day pack.
Buy tickets online
Many resorts now charge more at the counter than online, sometimes by thousands of yen.
Ski the morning
Fresh snow falls overnight and the best powder is gone by 10:00 at the big resorts.
End the day in an onsen
Almost every ski town has a hot spring. Wash before you get in, and cover tattoos where asked.

Best time to ski in Japan, month by month
December: resorts open, snow is thin until the third week, and prices are low until about 20 December. Christmas to New Year is busy and expensive.
January: the start of deep powder, cold and reliable. Mid-January, after the New Year holiday, is the best-value powder window.
February: peak snow and peak crowds, especially around Lunar New Year (6 February 2027) and the Sapporo Snow Festival (4–11 February).
March: warmer, sunnier and quieter, with good snow on the higher resorts and spring discounts from mid-month.
April to May: spring skiing at high resorts such as Hakkoda, Kagura, Shiga Kogen and Gassan, with cheap tickets and soft snow.
