Namba to Kintetsu-Nara by train

A Kyoto and Nara day tour from Osaka or Kyoto costs from about €33 / US$45 (¥8,800 on one listing) up to around US$100 per person on the big booking sites at the time of writing (October 2026), and you book online, usually with free cancellation up to 24 hours before. The standard combo bus tour does Nara Park, Fushimi Inari Taisha and Arashiyama in about nine to ten hours, leaving Namba around 7:20 to 8:00am and getting back between 5:30 and 6:30pm.

That’s three of Kansai’s biggest sights for the price of a decent dinner, with no train changes to work out. The catch is time: about an hour with the deer, roughly 70 to 90 minutes at the torii gates, and the clock running the whole day. Below we compare the four main tour types, list the real meeting points, show how long you actually get at each stop, and price up the do-it-yourself train version.

What types of Kyoto and Nara day tour are there?

There are four main formats. They look similar on booking sites but the days are very different.

1. Nara + Fushimi Inari + Arashiyama combo (Bus tour)

The Lowdown: The bestseller on Klook, Viator and GetYourGuide. One coach, three stops, mostly free time rather than a guided walk. Some versions add a ride on the Sagano Romantic Train in Arashiyama.

Where: Departs Osaka (Namba / Nippombashi area). Kyoto guests on some versions join at Nara Park at 8:50am rather than boarding a bus.

The Vibe: Efficient and busy. The guide handles logistics and headcounts; you do the sightseeing yourself.

Price: Roughly €33 to ¥8,800 per person at the time of writing (October 2026), depending on platform and date; Klook’s version showed US$45.65 (discounted from US$76.05) when we checked. Temple tickets, lunch and deer crackers are extra.

Official Link: GetYourGuide listing via Jasumo

💡 Japan Pro Tip: Check which package you’re buying. On Klook, only one option explicitly includes the Sagano train ticket; the others don’t.

2. Kyoto-only highlights (Bus tour)

The Lowdown: No Nara. Instead you get five or six Kyoto temples in one go, typically Kiyomizu-dera, Sanjusangen-do, Fushimi Inari, the Arashiyama bamboo forest, Kinkaku-ji and Tenryu-ji. Admission fees are usually included.

Where: Starts and ends at Kyoto Station. No hotel pick-up.

The Vibe: More temples, more stairs, more guided commentary. Viator flags it as needing at least moderate fitness.

Price: Viator’s “PERFECT KYOTO 1-Day Bus Tour” was listed at US$92.95 without lunch and US$99.59 with a buffet lunch. Adding lunch on the day costs ¥3,000.

Official Link: PERFECT KYOTO 1-Day Bus Tour listing

💡 Japan Pro Tip: If you’re short on days and have to pick one, this is the better “Kyoto” day. The combo tour only shows you one corner of Kyoto (Arashiyama) plus Fushimi Inari.

3. Kyoto departure, Kyoto + Nara (Bus tour)

The Lowdown: A smaller category that starts in Kyoto and swaps Arashiyama for central sights: Kiyomizu-dera, Gion, Fushimi Inari, Nara Park and Todai-ji.

Where: Kyoto city. VELTRA’s version (operated by Tuyi Group Japan) runs on weekdays only and has no pick-up.

The Vibe: Better for people staying in Kyoto who want Todai-ji’s Great Buddha rather than the bamboo grove.

Price: Varies by date. Read the cancellation terms: this one charges 50% from three business days out and 100% from the day before.

Official Link: VELTRA Kyoto & Nara Day Tour

💡 Japan Pro Tip: This is the only common format that includes Todai-ji. Bus combos from Osaka give you deer and lawn, not the Great Buddha Hall.

4. Private car with driver or guide (Private tour)

The Lowdown: Your own vehicle, your own route. You can start at Fushimi Inari at dawn, skip Arashiyama, or add Uji.

Where: Hotel pick-up in Kyoto, Osaka or Nara.

The Vibe: Calm, flexible, expensive for two, good value for a family or group of six.

Price: One listed option starts at ¥79,605 per group (up to six people), covering the car, driver or guide, fuel, tolls and parking. It doesn’t say admission fees are included.

Official Link: Kyoto and Nara Customized Private Guided Tour

💡 Japan Pro Tip: Split six ways it’s about ¥13,300 each, which is close to the premium bus tours. For a group, the private car usually wins.

How much does a Kyoto and Nara day tour cost?

Prices on booking platforms move with the date and promotions. These are the figures we saw on the listings in October 2026.

Where do Kyoto and Nara day tours depart from?

Most Osaka departures meet near Namba, not Umeda. Check your voucher the night before, as meeting points shift by operator.

Osaka (GetYourGuide/Jasumo)Harimaya Nippombashi, 1-3-11 Nipponbashi, Chuo-ku. The listing calls it both “Exit 2 of Kintetsu Namba Station” and “Nipponbashi station exit 2”, so go by your voucher. Look for the guide holding a dollArrive by 8:00am

The GuruWalk-listed version says guides won’t contact you in advance; look for staff in “EASY GO” vests or with an “EASY GO” flag. Late arrivals can’t catch the bus up later, and Viator says the same for its Kyoto tour.

How long do you get at each stop?

This is the question most listings bury. Here’s what the combo-tour itineraries say:

StopJasumo/GetYourGuide versionGuruWalk version
나라 공원About 1 hour1h 10m
Fushimi Inari TaishaAbout 70 minutes1h 30m
아라시야마About 2.5 hours (lunch is in this window)2h 30m (lunch included in free time)
Back in Kyoto4:30pmAbout 5:05pm
Back in Osaka5:30pm (6–8pm in peak season)About 6:20pm

What that means on the ground:

  • Nara Park, one hour: enough for the deer around Todai-ji’s Nandaimon gate and a few photos. Not enough to queue for and properly see the Great Buddha Hall, or to walk up to Kasuga Taisha and back.
  • Fushimi Inari, 70–90 minutes: enough for the Senbon Torii and some way up the mountain. Entry is free and the grounds never close, which is why going on your own at dawn is so much better. Inariyama is 233m high and lined with around 10,000 torii, so the summit loop is off the table for most people.
  • Arashiyama, 2.5 hours: the most generous stop. Bamboo grove, Togetsukyo Bridge, Nonomiya Shrine, the Kimono Forest and lunch. On train packages, the Sagano ride (about 25 minutes one way) eats into this.

Is a Kyoto bus tour worth it?

Yes, if you have one day, are staying in Osaka and want deer, torii and bamboo without figuring out three railway companies. You pay roughly four times the train fares for the privilege, but you also get Arashiyama, which is awkward to add by rail on the same day.

No, if you hate being rushed, want to go inside the big temples, or are visiting in November. Peak-season traffic is why Jasumo warns the Osaka return can slip from 5:30pm to as late as 8pm.

What tours typically skip:

  • Inside Todai-ji. Most Osaka combos stop at Nara Park only.
  • Fushimi Inari’s upper mountain. Quieter, better views, but it needs two to three hours you won’t have.
  • Kyoto’s centre. Gion, Kiyomizu-dera and Higashiyama aren’t on the main Osaka combo. See our 기온시조역 가이드 if you want to do them yourself another evening.
  • Early mornings. With a 7:20 to 8:00am departure from Osaka, the first stop isn’t until around 9am, and Fushimi Inari usually comes mid-to-late in the day.

Can you do Kyoto and Nara in one day by train?

Yes, and it’s much cheaper. Doing all three tour stops plus Arashiyama by train is tight, so we’d do Nara and Fushimi Inari by train and save Arashiyama for a separate morning.

Our suggested DIY loop from Osaka:

  1. Osaka-Namba → Kintetsu-Nara: Kintetsu Rapid Express, about 36–40 minutes, ¥680. Kintetsu-Nara is the station closest to Nara Park.
  2. Nara Park and Todai-ji: walk through the park to Todai-ji. The Great Buddha Hall is ¥800 for adults (¥400 for ages 6–12), open 7:30am–5:30pm April–October and 8am–5pm November–March.
  3. Kintetsu-Nara → Kyoto: Kintetsu Express about 45–50 minutes, ¥760 (some trips change at Yamato-Saidaiji), or the Limited Express in about 35 minutes for about ¥1,280 including the limited express charge. JR’s Miyakoji Rapid on the JR Nara Line runs from JR Nara for ¥720 and takes about 45–50 minutes.
  4. Kyoto → Fushimi Inari: JR Inari Station is two stops (about five minutes) from Kyoto on the JR Nara Line, right outside the shrine. Keihan’s Fushimi-Inari Station is a five-minute walk.
  5. Kyoto → Osaka: JR Special Rapid, about 28 minutes, ¥580.

Tap through with an IC card such as ICOCA or Suica so you don’t need to buy separate tickets (our IC 카드 가이드 explains which works where). Kintetsu also sells a KINTETSU RAIL PASS 1day for foreign visitors at ¥1,900, which only pays off if you’re making several Kintetsu journeys that day.

Do you need to book the Sagano Romantic Train in advance?

In autumn, yes. Online tickets go on sale at midnight Japan time one month before the travel date, on the railway’s official reservation site. Station windows don’t sell advance tickets; they only sell same-day seats (at Saga, Arashiyama and Kameoka, not Hozukyo), and trains can be full.

Key facts for late 2026:

  • Fare: ¥880 adults, ¥440 children, one way, any section.
  • Last season for the current trains: JR West says the current cars retire on 29 December 2026, with new trains due in spring 2027.
  • Evening light-up: 24 October to 29 December 2026, from the 4:30pm departure from Torokko Kameoka onwards. Extra evening trains run on many dates. There’s no service on 16 December.
  • Tours and the train: tour listings advise buying round-trip seats at least a month ahead in peak season. If your tour package doesn’t include the train, the guide may only be able to buy tickets on site in the off-season.

When is the best time to do a Kyoto and Nara day trip?

Autumn leaves season is the prettiest and the most crowded time for this route, and the reason tour returns run late. Check our Kyoto autumn leaves 2026 guide for forecast dates before you book a tour day.

Practical timing points:

  • Kiyomizu-dera opens at 6am and closes at 6pm until 20 November 2026, then runs a night viewing to 9:30pm from 21 to 30 November.
  • 덴류지 opens 8:30am–5pm (last entry 4:50pm). Both the garden and the buildings are scheduled to close on 29–30 October 2026, so on those dates Arashiyama tours can’t offer it as an add-on.
  • Kinkaku-ji is 9am–5pm, ¥500 for adults.
  • Weekdays beat weekends everywhere on this route, and the VELTRA Kyoto–Nara tour only runs on weekdays.

What are the rules for the Nara deer?

There are a lot of them. The Nara Deer Preservation Foundation counted 1,687 deer in Nara Park in its July 2026 survey, up 222 on the year before. They’re wild animals, not petting-zoo animals.

  • Autumn is rutting season. The foundation put out a warning about male deer in rut in August 2026. Give stags plenty of space, particularly with children.
  • Feed only deer crackers. If you feed them, use the shika senbei crackers sold in the park for that purpose (the tour listings mention buying them on the spot). Don’t offer your own snacks.

At Fushimi Inari, the shrine’s own rules apply: eat and drink only in designated rest areas (no eating while walking), no drones, no blocking narrow paths for photos and no sitting on the ground. If the crowds put you off, our 붉은 토리이 게이트 안내 lists quieter torii tunnels elsewhere in Japan.

Our verdict

A combo Kyoto and Nara day tour is a solid one-day fix if you’re based in Osaka and want the three headline sights without the planning. If you can spare a little effort, the train version costs about a quarter of the price and lets you reach Fushimi Inari before the coaches. Kyoto and nara day tour FAQ

How much is a Kyoto and Nara day tour?

At the time of writing (October 2026), combo bus tours from Osaka cost roughly €33 to ¥8,800 per person on the big booking platforms, and Kyoto-only tours with admissions run to around US$93–100. A private car for up to six people starts at about ¥79,605 per group. Prices change by date.

Can you do Kyoto and Nara in one day?

Yes. Tours cover Nara Park, Fushimi Inari and Arashiyama in about nine to ten hours. By train, Nara plus Fushimi Inari is comfortable in a day; adding Arashiyama makes it rushed.

How do I get from Osaka to Nara by train?

Take the Kintetsu Rapid Express from Osaka-Namba to Kintetsu-Nara, about 36–40 minutes for ¥680. Kintetsu-Nara is the closest station to Nara Park.

How long do tours spend at each stop?

Combo tour listings give about an hour at Nara Park, 70 to 90 minutes at Fushimi Inari and around two and a half hours in Arashiyama, including lunch.

Do I need to book the Sagano Romantic Train in advance?

In peak season, yes. Online tickets open at midnight Japan time one month before travel; station windows only sell same-day tickets, and trains can sell out.

Do Kyoto and Nara day tours include entrance fees?

The cheaper Osaka combos usually don’t: Tenryu-ji (¥500) and lunch are extra. Kyoto-only highlight tours such as Viator’s PERFECT KYOTO include admission to the temples on the route.

Where do Kyoto and Nara tours from Osaka depart?

Most meet around Namba and Nippombashi, for example at Harimaya Nippombashi (1-3-11 Nipponbashi) or Kintetsu-Nippombashi Station. Kyoto departures typically use Kyoto Station’s Hachijo side. Always check your voucher.
