Rainy day Tokyo: 14 things that still work (2026)
A rainy day Tokyo plan is easy to put together: the city has digital-art museums you walk through barefoot, 24-hour onsen complexes, department-store food halls and covered shopping streets, most of them linked to a station. Here are 14 things to do in Tokyo when it rains, with 2026 prices, hours and the closest dry exit.
We mixed the famous (teamLab, Shibuya Sky) with places most lists miss, like a bookshop that charges entry and a single act of kabuki for ¥1,500. For a full museum round-up, see our Tokyo museum guide; this list covers everything else.

When does it rain most in Tokyo?
The rainy season (tsuyu) is the wet stretch. The Japan Meteorological Agency’s preliminary figures put the 2026 Kanto-Koshin rainy season from around 7 June to around 20 July, against a normal of around 7 June to 19 July (JMA rainy-season data).
Late summer and early autumn bring typhoons, which can stop trains and close open-air decks for a day. Outside those spells, a rainy day in Tokyo usually means steady drizzle, which is exactly when the picks below shine. Use the table to build a rainy day Tokyo plan around the time you have.
| If you have… | Go for | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 2–3 hours | teamLab Borderless, Edo-Tokyo Museum | Direct or near-direct subway access |
| A full day | Toyosu: teamLab Planets + Manyo Club | One Yurikamome stop apart |
| Small budget | Tocho observatories, Koishikawa Korakuen, Nakano Broadway | Free or ¥300 |
| Kids in tow | Tokyo Joypolis, Sunshine City | Rides, aquarium and arcade under one roof |
| An evening | Kabuki-za single act, Manyo Club | Late finishes; Manyo Club never closes |
Rainy day Tokyo: 14 things to do when it rains
1. teamLab Borderless (Digital art)
The Lowdown: teamLab’s borderless rooms moved to Azabudai Hills in 2024, and the artworks drift from room to room. Tickets are sold by time slot and the price changes with demand.
어디: B1, Azabudai Hills, connected underground to Kamiyacho Station Exit 5 (Hibiya Line) and Roppongi-itchome Station Exit 4 (Namboku Line).
가격: From ¥3,400 (dynamic) for adults depending on date and slot (2026); ¥200 more if you buy at the door. Open 8:30–21:00, last entry 20:00.
Official link: teamLab Borderless
💡 일본의 팁: Rain pushes walk-ups up, so book online the night before. The underground link from Kamiyacho means you never need your umbrella.
2. teamLab Planets (Digital art)
The Lowdown: The one where you wade. You walk barefoot through artworks with water up to knee height, so the rain outside barely matters. It runs until the end of 2027.
어디: Toyosu 6-1-16, Koto-ku, one minute from Shin-Toyosu Station North Exit (Yurikamome Line).
가격: Adults ¥3,800, junior high and high school ¥2,800, children 4–12 ¥1,500; dynamic pricing applies. Open 8:00–22:00, last entry an hour before. Closed Thursday 5 November and Thursday 3 December 2026.
Official link: teamLab Planets
💡 일본의 팁: Wear trousers that roll above the knee; staff will not let you into the next room in wet clothes. Our museum guide compares it with other big-ticket art spaces.
| teamLab Borderless | teamLab Planets | |
|---|---|---|
| Adult price (2026) | From ¥3,400 (dynamic) | From ¥3,800 (dynamic) |
| Hours | 8:30–21:00 | 8:00–22:00 |
| 역 | Kamiyacho / Roppongi-itchome, underground link | Shin-Toyosu, 1 min walk |
| You will get wet? | 아니요 | Yes, to the knee, inside |
3. Shibuya Sky (Observation deck)
The Lowdown: Shibuya Sky has an indoor floor at 46F and an open-air rooftop, Sky Stage. The rooftop can close temporarily for strong wind and other bad weather, while the indoor floor normally stays open.
어디: Shibuya Scramble Square, above Shibuya Station.
가격: Time-slot tickets, priced by slot; check the official ticket page before you book. Open 10:00–22:30, last entry 21:20.
Official link: Shibuya Sky
💡 일본의 팁: Do not buy a premium sunset slot on a wet day. Book in the morning once you know the forecast, read your seller’s refund rules for rooftop closures, and spend the rest of the visit at Shibuya Parco: Nintendo TOKYO and the Pokémon Center are on its 6F “Cyberspace Shibuya” floor (expect weekend queues).
4. Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building (Free observation deck)
The Lowdown: Tocho’s twin observatories sit 202 m up, behind glass, so rain only costs you some of the view. They are free and open late.
어디: Nishi-Shinjuku, a short walk through the underground passages from Shinjuku Station’s west side or next to Tochomae Station (Oedo Line).
가격: Free. 9:30–22:00 (entry until 21:30); the north deck closes at 17:30 unless the south is shut. North closes 2nd and 4th Mondays, south 1st and 3rd Tuesdays; both close 29 December to 3 January (except 1 January).
Official link: Tokyo Metropolitan Government
💡 일본의 팁: The free evening projection-mapping show on the building is cancelled in bad weather, so do not wait outside for it. More west-side ideas are in our Shinjuku guide.

5. Edo-Tokyo Museum (History museum)
The Lowdown: Tokyo’s city-history museum reopened on 31 March 2026 after four years of renovation. The permanent galleries cover Edo-era streets, a life-size bridge and the modern city.
어디: 1-4-1 Yokoami, Sumida-ku: one minute from Ryogoku Station Exits A3/A4 (Oedo Line) or three minutes from the JR West Exit.
가격: Adults ¥800, university ¥480, high school ¥300, 65+ ¥400, junior high and under free. 9:30–17:30, Saturdays to 19:30; closed Mondays.
Official link: Edo-Tokyo Museum
💡 일본의 팁: Special shows cost extra: “Toyotomi Brothers” runs until 8 November 2026 and a Maruyama Okyo exhibition from 28 November 2026 to 24 January 2027. Use the Oedo Line exit and you will walk under cover almost the whole way.
6. Isetan Shinjuku food hall (Depachika)
The Lowdown: Isetan’s basement food hall is the benchmark depachika: wagashi, bento, fruit that costs as much as a dinner, and tasting counters. It is free to browse and fully indoors.
어디: Shinjuku 3-14-1, linked to Shinjuku-sanchome Station: about 30 seconds from the Isetan gate on the Fukutoshin Line, one minute on the Marunouchi Line.
가격: Free to enter. Store hours 10:00–20:00; the 7F restaurant floor runs 11:00–22:00.
Official link: Isetan Shinjuku
💡 일본의 팁: Go at opening for the best choice. Pick up a picnic for your hotel room instead of hunting for a dry restaurant.
7. Tokyo Station First Avenue (Underground mall)
The Lowdown: Under the Yaesu side of Tokyo Station, three zones sit side by side on B1: Tokyo Character Street (TV-network and anime shops), Tokyo Ramen Street and Tokyo Okashi Land (snack brands).
어디: Marunouchi 1-9-1, Chiyoda-ku, directly connected to the Yaesu exits of Tokyo Station.
가격: Free to enter; you pay per shop or bowl.
Official link: Tokyo Station First Avenue
💡 일본의 팁: The mall posted a change to its opening hours on 13 October 2026, so check the site before a late visit.
8. Tokyo Toyosu Manyo Club (Onsen theme park)
The Lowdown: A 24-hour hot-spring complex beside Toyosu Market, with baths, lounges, restaurants and a rooftop footbath garden with a 360-degree view of the bay. It is the closest thing Tokyo has to the old Odaiba onsen parks.
어디: Toyosu, linked by a pedestrian deck to Shijo-mae Station (Yurikamome Line), one stop from Shin-Toyosu.
가격: Day package priced per adult (check the official site for today’s rate), plus ¥150 bathing tax for over-12s; it covers entry until 3:00, after which a late-night fee applies. The large bath closes 3:00–5:00 for cleaning.
Official link: Tokyo Toyosu Manyo Club
💡 일본의 팁: Pair it with teamLab Planets: wade first, bathe second. Tattoos are refused unless you follow the house rules, so ask staff first. Highway buses to Haneda (about 35 minutes, three round trips a day) leave from next-door Michi no Terrace Toyosu.
9. Tokyo Joypolis (Arcade and indoor theme park)
The Lowdown: An indoor amusement park of rides, VR attractions and arcade games inside the Decks Tokyo Beach mall in Odaiba. Rain-proof and very kid-friendly.
어디: Daiba 1-6-1, Minato-ku: two minutes from Odaiba-kaihinkoen Station (Yurikamome) or five from Tokyo Teleport (Rinkai Line).
가격: Entry only ¥1,700 adults (18–59), ¥1,400 children (7–17); Passport with rides ¥6,000 / ¥5,000; Evening Passport ¥5,000 / ¥4,000 from 15:00. Over-60s and under-7s enter free.
Official link: Tokyo Joypolis
💡 일본의 팁: Buy entry only if you want two or three rides; the Passport pays off beyond that. For classic multi-floor game centres, see our Akihabara guide.
10. Kabuki-za single-act seats (Theatre)
The Lowdown: You do not need a whole afternoon for kabuki. Kabuki-za sells single-act tickets on the 4th level, so you can watch one play for under an hour or two, with English subtitle devices for rent.
어디: Ginza, with direct access from Exit 3 of Higashi-Ginza Station (Hibiya and Asakusa lines).
가격: October 2026 single acts cost ¥1,500–4,000 (4th level), with upgraded 2nd-level seats at ¥5,400–13,800 on some days. The November Programme runs 1–25 November 2026 (no shows on 9 or 17 November), the December Programme 2–25 December.
Official link: Kabuki Web
💡 일본의 팁: Check the single-act page on the day of your visit, because act times are confirmed close to the run. Sumo fans: Tokyo has no November tournament, so Kabuki-za is the better rainy-day stage show this month.
11. Koishikawa Korakuen (Rainy-season garden)
The Lowdown: One of Tokyo’s oldest stroll gardens and our most underrated rainy day Tokyo pick. Light rain darkens the stones, empties the paths and makes the ponds look their best; in June it is at its greenest.
어디: Bunkyo-ku: two minutes from Iidabashi Station on the Oedo Line, eight on JR; the east gate is about three minutes from Suidobashi.
가격: ¥300. 9:00–17:00 (entry until 16:30); closed 29 December to 1 January.
Official link: Tokyo Metropolitan Park Association
💡 일본의 팁: Autumn maples around the ponds peak from late November to early December, and a ginkgo grove near the east entrance turns gold. Bring a compact umbrella; there is little cover inside.

12. Nakano Sun Mall and Nakano Broadway (Covered shopping street)
The Lowdown: Nakano Sun Mall is a 225 m covered street running from Nakano Station to Nakano Broadway, a 1960s complex packed with anime, figure, vintage-watch and collector shops.
어디: Across from the north exit of Nakano Station: about five minutes from Shinjuku on the JR Chuo Line, also on the Tozai Line.
가격: Free to browse. Most shops open around 12:00–20:00; some close on Wednesdays.
Official link: Nakano Broadway (Japan Guide)
💡 일본의 팁: Do not arrive before noon, when half the shutters are still down. Koenji, one stop west, has more covered arcades; see our Koenji guide.
13. Bunkitsu Roppongi (Bookshop with an entry fee)
The Lowdown: A bookshop that charges admission, so it stays quiet. The fee includes unlimited coffee and sencha, and you can read anything on the shelves all day.
어디: Roppongi 6-1-20, Roppongi Denki Building 1F, one minute from Roppongi Station.
가격: All day (9:00–21:00): ¥2,750 weekdays, ¥3,630 weekends and holidays. Short plans from ¥495 for 30 minutes (¥605 at weekends). Café last order 19:30; irregular closing days.
Official link: Bunkitsu Roppongi
💡 일본의 팁: Combine it with teamLab Borderless at Azabudai Hills, one subway stop away. The short plans make it a good place to wait out a downpour.
14. Sunshine City (All-in-one complex)
The Lowdown: Ikebukuro’s “city within the city” opened in 1978 and still fills a wet day: an aquarium, the Namja Town indoor theme park, an observation deck and hundreds of shops.
어디: Just east of Ikebukuro Station.
가격: Sunshine Aquarium ¥2,600–3,200 depending on the day; Namja Town ¥1,200 entry or ¥3,700 with unlimited rides; Sunshine 60 observation deck ¥700–1,200. Shops 10:00–20:00.
Official link: Sunshine City
💡 일본의 팁: The aquarium has outdoor sections on the roof, so save it for a dry spell and do Namja Town first. Autumn and winter aquarium hours are usually 10:00–18:00.
What is umbrella etiquette in Tokyo?
Tokyo runs on umbrellas, and there are rules nobody tells you. Follow these and you will blend in on a rainy day in Tokyo.
None of this is written down at the door, but locals notice. Getting it right is the easiest rainy day Tokyo upgrade there is.
- At shop and museum entrances, use the umbrella stand, umbrella locker or the plastic sleeve dispenser. Do not carry a dripping umbrella inside.
- Shake it out before you go down station stairs, and carry it vertically, tip down, on stairs and escalators.
- Clear plastic umbrellas in stands all look alike. Never take one that is not yours; mark yours with a sticker or ribbon.
- Close it under station canopies and covered arcades, even if others are still walking in.
- On crowded pavements, tilt or lift your umbrella to pass people rather than bumping theirs.
Where can you buy an umbrella in Tokyo?
Every convenience store (7-Eleven, FamilyMart, Lawson) sells clear vinyl umbrellas near the till as soon as rain starts, and 100-yen shops such as Daiso stock folding ones. Station kiosks sell them too.
For something that lasts, department-store umbrella counters in Ginza and Shinjuku sell Japanese-made folding umbrellas. Before a big shopping day, read our Japan tax refund guide for the current tax-free rules.
