The best places to see fireflies near Tokyo are open for about six weeks a year, and most visitors miss the window entirely. The season runs from mid-May to early July, peaks in the second and third weeks of June, and a given site may only be worth visiting for about ten nights.
Every firefly spot within easy reach of central Tokyo – hotel gardens, neighbourhood matsuri, and three river valleys where the fireflies are wild rather than released. The dates below are the confirmed 2026 season. Organisers announce dates of the following year every spring and the windows only change a few days, so plan from these dates and check again in April.
1. Hotel Chinzanso Tokyo — Firefly Fantasy (Hotel Garden)

요약: The only serious firefly viewing in the centre of Tokyo. It is a 20,000-square-metre garden in Bunkyō-ku that has bred its own fireflies for decades. In 2026 the run was 16 May to 30 June, 18:30–23:00, with garden entry closing at 20:00.
장소: Bunkyō-ku. 10 min from Edogawabashi Stn (Yūrakuchō Line) or Mejiro Stn (JR Yamanote)
분위기: Formal garden, mist machines, quietly extravagant
요금: Garden entry ticket, restaurant spend, or hotel stay
공식 링크: Hotel Chinzanso Tokyo — Firefly Fantasy
💡 Japan Pro Tip: You cannot simply walk in after 18:30. Entry is limited to hotel guests, wedding and banquet attendees, anyone who has spent a minimum at the restaurants or shop that day, and advance ticket holders – and for the 2026 season tickets went on sale at noon on 30 April, selling out on many nights. Make a calendar reminder for late April, or reserve a table at a restaurant, a sure bet back door.
2. Hachiōji Firefly Nights — Yūyake Koyake Fureai no Sato (Nature Park)

요약: The best value in Tokyo Prefecture, and the least staged. Two species emerge along the waterways here – Genji and Heike, different flash rhythms, different weeks. It ran 6–21 June 2026, 18:00–20:45.
장소: 2030 Kamiongatamachi, Hachiōji. Keiō or JR Chūō Line to Takao Stn (north exit), 1 min to the Yūyake Koyake bus stop
분위기: Mountain village, no city glow, actual darkness
요금: 200엔
공식 링크: Yūyake Koyake Fureai no Sato
💡 Japan Pro Tip: The Genji fireflies appear first, flashing at about once per two seconds, while the Heike appear a week or two after and flash about twice as often. For big slow ones, you should go in the first week of the run. Locals schedule their visits around this, and it is the single most useful thing to know about firefly season.
3. Yomiuriland HANA-BIYORI (Theme Park)

요약: The longest season on this list by a long shot – 23 May to 1 July in 2026 – because the fireflies are kept in a controlled greenhouse rather than left at the mercy of the weather. Viewing is 19:40–20:30 on weekdays, until 21:00 at weekends.
장소: 4015-1 Yanokuchi, Inagi. Keiō Yomiuri-land Stn, then gondola or bus
분위기: Flower park by day, engineered magic by night
요금: ¥400 on top of park admission
공식 링크: Yomiuriland HANA-BIYORI
💡 Japan Pro Tip: This is the rain plan. Fireflies do not fly in wind or heavy rain, so every other site on this list goes dark in bad weather. HANA-BIYORI’s viewing area is indoors and stays open regardless. If you have only one free evening in June and the forecast is bad, this is where it goes.
4. Kugayama Firefly Festival (Neighbourhood Matsuri)

요약: A 29-year-old residential street festival along the Tamagawa Aqueduct, releasing around 3,000 fireflies. It ran 6–7 June in 2026 from 14:00, with the fireflies from dusk. Food stalls, local schools, virtually no tourists.
장소: Kugayama Minami 3-chōme, Suginami-ku. Kugayama Stn (Keiō Inokashira Line)
분위기: Suburban Tokyo doing its own thing
요금: 무료
공식 링크: Tokyo Cheapo — Tokyo firefly festivals
💡 Japan Pro Tip: Arrive around 18:30, not at the 14:00 start. There are fairgrounds, with booths and the fireflies are only let out at dusk into the aqueduct channel, with the viewing line being formed in the final half-hour of daylight. Twenty minutes early is enough. Two hours early just gets you a lot of yakisoba.
5. Setagaya Firefly Festival (Neighbourhood Matsuri)

요약: The last firefly event of the Tokyo season, in the grounds of the Daikan Yashiki historic house – 4–5 July in 2026, 16:00–21:00, viewing from 17:00. It’s accompanied by a market for sagisō heron-flower, the actual draw of the area.
장소: Setagaya-ku. Setagaya Stn or Kamimachi Stn (Tōkyū Setagaya Line)
분위기: Edo-era house, hydrangeas going over, end of season
요금: 무료
공식 링크: Tokyo Cheapo — Tokyo firefly festivals
💡 Japan Pro Tip: If you are in Tokyo in early July and thought you had missed firefly season entirely, this is the last chance in the city – everything else finishes by the end of June. It is also the least crowded of the neighbourhood festivals, because by July nobody is looking.
6. Fussa Firefly Festival (River Festival)

요약: Fireflies raised by the Fussa Firefly Research Association and released along the Tama River, with a full street festival attached. It is a one-day event – 31 May in 2026, 15:00–21:00 – so it is all or nothing.
장소: Fussa City. 10 min from Ushihama Stn (JR Ōme Line) or 7 min from Kumagawa Stn (JR Itsukaichi Line)
분위기: Riverside, food trucks, unpretentious
요금: 무료
공식 링크: GO TOKYO — Fussa Firefly Festival
💡 Japan Pro Tip: It is held in light rain and cancelled in heavy rain, and as it is one night only, there is no second chance. Check the Fussa city site on the morning of, not the night before. If it is called off, Ōsawa no Sato (below) is 45 minutes away and needs no organiser at all.
7. Sankeien Garden, Yokohama (Classical Garden)

요약: A 175,000-square-metre garden filled with historic buildings from Meiji Japan, opened for viewing the fireflies at night in early June. The fireflies drift over the ponds beneath a three-storey pagoda.
장소: 58-1 Honmoku Sannotani, Naka-ku, Yokohama. Bus from Yokohama Stn
분위기: The most photogenic option, and it knows it
요금: Around ¥700 garden admission
공식 링크: Sankeien Garden
💡 Japan Pro Tip: Sankeien’s firefly evenings are usually only a handful of nights in the first half of June, and they are not announced until three or four weeks ahead. Do not build a trip around it – check the garden’s site once you are already in Japan and treat it as a bonus if the dates line up.
8. Ōsawa no Sato, Mitaka (Wild Fireflies)

요약: Not a festival, no release, no entrance – the flooded fields of rice terraces with a boardwalk through the grass, and the fireflies that actually live there. Mid-June, roughly 19:00–21:00. It is on the Tokyo Metropolitan Government’s list of firefly spots.
장소: Ōsawa, Mitaka City. Bus from Mitaka or Chōfu Stn
분위기: Farmland inside greater Tokyo, no stalls, no PA system
요금: 무료
공식 링크: GO TOKYO — fireflies around Tokyo’s waterways
💡 Japan Pro Tip: No torches, no phone lights, no flash photography – this is a working farming area with a wild population, and the rules are enforced by neighbours rather than staff. Give your eyes a full ten minutes to adjust before deciding there is nothing there. Most people give up after four.
9. Yozawa River, Akigawa Valley (Wild Fireflies)

요약: A mountain river about 90 minutes west of Shinjuku, with wild fireflies for about an hour from around 20:00 in June. No event, no crowd, no schedule to check – the downside is that you are depending on the weather and your own timing.
장소: Akiruno City, Akigawa Valley. JR Itsukaichi Line to Musashi-Itsukaichi Stn, then bus
분위기: Genuinely dark, genuinely quiet
요금: 무료
공식 링크: GO TOKYO — fireflies around Tokyo’s waterways
💡 Japan Pro Tip: Take the time to figure out the return train before heading out. The last services from Musashi-Itsukaichi are earlier than Tokyo instincts assume, and the buses out of the valley stop well before that – this is the one spot on the list where getting stranded is a real possibility, not just an inconvenience. Alternatively, stay at Iwakura Onsen in Ōme, which has firefly viewing on the Nariki River and a bed at the end of it.
10. Gotemba Kōgen Tokinosumika (Mt Fuji Day Trip)

요약: Fireflies start to appear in the parkland resort located at the foot of Mt Fuji from late May through the end of June (23 May to 21 June 2026, 19:30–21:00, last entry 20:30). Onsen, beer hall and illumination on the same location, a full day not an evening.
장소: Gotemba, Shizuoka. Bus or JR Gotemba Line from Tokyo (around 2 hours)
분위기: Resort complex, Fuji on a clear day, fireflies at dusk
요금: Free entry; firefly area requires around ¥1,000 spend on site
공식 링크: Gotemba Kōgen Tokinosumika
💡 Japan Pro Tip: Combine with the onsen and have something to eat before 19:00, as the firefly area will open at 19:30, and the restaurants will get crowded by those who are doing this. For those who prefer to stay overnight close to Fuji, Fujisan Onsen Hotel Kaneyamaen on the Katsura River in Yamanashi runs firefly viewing for house guests only, with packages from around ¥30,800.

How to Actually See Fireflies Near Tokyo
The mistake is not choosing the wrong spot, it is choosing the wrong night. Fireflies fly on warm, humid, calm evenings and stay down in the grass on cool or windy ones. Rain the day before is fine. Wind is fatal.
Go between 19:30 and 21:00, after full dark – they thin out sharply after nine. Wear long sleeves and put repellent on your clothes rather than bare skin near the water. And keep your phone in your pocket: a white screen resets everyone’s night vision for several minutes, which is exactly why locals get annoyed about it. Watch, don’t catch.
Plan the season, not the evening
Firefly season runs about six weeks, and the good windows inside it are about ten days. If you are coming to Japan in June, leave one flexible evening in the itinerary rather than booking a fixed date, then choose the site on the day from the weather.
Chinzansō if you want it easy and central. Hachiōji if you want it real and cheap. Ōsawa no Sato if you want it free and wild. Once you’ve picked your evening, our guide to the best day trips from Tokyo by train covers the daylight hours. If you haven’t fixed your dates yet, our Japan month by month guide covers what each season actually offers.
FAQ
When is firefly season in Tokyo?
Mid-May through early July, peaking in the second and third weeks of June. Individual sites are only good for about ten nights. Typically, the first event is Hotel Chinzansō starting from mid-May and the latest is the Setagaya Firefly Festival in early July.
Where can I see fireflies inside central Tokyo?
The only substantial option in the city centre is Hotel Chinzanso Tokyo in Bunkyō-ku, and entry after 18:30 requires a garden ticket, a restaurant booking or a hotel stay. The neighbourhood festivals are in Kugayama and Setagaya (23 wards) while the rest is out west, in Tama or further.
Are firefly festivals near Tokyo free?
Most are. There are no entrance fees to Kugayama, Setagaya, Fussa, Nerima, Ōsawa no Sato and the river valleys along the Akigawa. The prices of the paid ones range from ¥200 at Hachiōji to approximately ¥700 at Sankeien Park or Toneri Park — and more at hotels and theme parks.
What time do fireflies come out in Japan?
Between about 19:30 and 21:00, once it is fully dark. They are most active on warm, humid, windless nights and mostly stay grounded when it is cool or windy. Arrive before dark and give your eyes ten minutes to adjust.
Can I see fireflies in Tokyo in August?
No. The season is finished everywhere in the Kantō region by early July. If you are in Japan in August, the summer matsuri and fireworks calendar replaces it – and that is the season Tokyo is really built around.
