Is the JR Pass Worth It in 2026? Run the Numbers for Your Route (7 Itineraries Tested)
Is the JR Pass worth it in 2026? For most first-timers doing Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka, no. The 7-day Japan Rail Pass costs ¥50,000 on the official website (¥53,000 from overseas agents since 1 October 2026), while the classic Tokyo–Kyoto–Osaka–Tokyo loop on single tickets costs about ¥29,500.
The pass starts to pay when you add a long leg such as Hiroshima, Kanazawa or Fukuoka inside the same 7 days. Below are the 2026 prices, real single fares for the routes tourists actually take, a break-even table for seven itineraries, and the regional passes that often beat the national one.

How much does the JR Pass cost in 2026?
The JR Group raised pass prices in October 2023, then announced a second change on 9 April 2026. From 1 October 2026, passes bought through overseas JR-designated agencies cost more. The official online shop kept the old prices “for a limited time”, and JR says it will announce when that freeze ends.
| Pass (adult) | Official JR Pass online shop | Overseas JR-designated agency (from 1 Oct 2026) | Child 6–11 (website / agency) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ordinary, 7 days | ¥50,000 | ¥53,000 | ¥25,000 / ¥27,000 |
| Ordinary, 14 days | ¥80,000 | ¥84,000 | ¥40,000 / ¥42,000 |
| Ordinary, 21 days | ¥100,000 | ¥105,000 | ¥50,000 / ¥53,000 |
| Green, 7 days | ¥70,000 | ¥74,000 | ¥35,000 / ¥37,000 |
| Green, 14 days | ¥110,000 | ¥116,000 | ¥55,000 / ¥58,000 |
| Green, 21 days | ¥140,000 | ¥147,000 | ¥70,000 / ¥74,000 |
Prices from the official Japan Rail Pass price page and the JR Group announcement of 9 April 2026, checked 18 October 2026. The price that applies is the one shown when you pay online or when the agency issues your Exchange Order. Under-6s ride free unless they need their own seat.
Practical takeaway: buy on the official site, not through a reseller, and do it soon. Every saving figure in this article uses the ¥50,000 website price. Add ¥3,000 if you buy from an agent.

2027 update: JR Central and JR West will raise Nozomi and Mizuho reserved-seat fares for tickets bought from 1 July 2027 (Tokyo–Shin-Osaka goes from ¥14,720 to ¥15,420) and Green Car prices for journeys from 15 December 2027, while unreserved seats and the JR Pass price itself are unchanged by this announcement. Pricier point-to-point tickets nudge the break-even in the pass’s favour, by ¥1,400 to ¥1,960 on our sample one-week itineraries, so longer itineraries west of Osaka now come out ahead of the ¥50,000 online pass more easily, while a simple Tokyo–Osaka return still does not. See the full new fare table and our recalculated break-even examples in Shinkansen fare increase 2027: new prices and how to pay less.
What doesn’t the JR Pass cover? The Nozomi and Mizuho catch
The pass covers Hikari, Kodama and Sakura trains, but not the fastest Nozomi and Mizuho on the Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu Shinkansen. Since October 2023, pass holders can ride them by buying a special add-on ticket that only JR Pass holders can buy.
| Section | Nozomi/Mizuho add-on (one way) |
|---|---|
| Tokyo – Nagoya | ¥4,180 |
| Tokyo – Kyoto | ¥4,960 |
| Tokyo – Shin-Osaka | ¥4,960 |
| Nagoya – Hiroshima | ¥4,960 |
| Tokyo – Hiroshima | ¥6,500 |
| Shin-Osaka – Hakata | ¥4,960 |
| Hakata – Kagoshima-Chuo | ¥5,150 |
Source: japanrailpass.net special ticket page と JR Central. The price is the same for unreserved, reserved and Green seats. Green seats need a Green pass.
- Buy it at JR ticket machines or ticket offices, from one month before travel up to the day itself.
- Seats sold to pass holders are capped, so they can sell out while the train still shows empty seats.
- On peak dates (New Year, Golden Week, Obon), every Nozomi seat is reserved, so you must buy the reserved version.
- Refunds are only at the place of sale, before departure, minus ¥340 (reserved) or ¥220 (unreserved).
The money matters more than it looks. Two Nozomi legs between Tokyo and Kyoto add ¥9,920 to your pass, which wipes out the saving on most one-week trips. If you hold a pass, plan on Hikari.
What do single Shinkansen tickets cost on the main tourist routes?
These are standard adult one-way fares, regular season, including the base fare and the express fee. Reserved seats cost ¥200 less in off-peak periods, ¥200 more in busy periods and ¥400 more in the busiest ones.
| Route (one way) | Nozomi reserved | Hikari/Kodama reserved | Unreserved |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tokyo – Nagoya | ¥11,300 | ¥11,090 | ¥10,560 |
| Tokyo – Kyoto | ¥14,170 | ¥13,850 | ¥13,320 |
| Tokyo – Shin-Osaka | ¥14,720 | ¥14,400 | ¥13,870 |
| Tokyo – Hiroshima | ¥19,760 | ¥18,910 | ¥18,380 |
| Tokyo – Hakata (Fukuoka) | ¥23,810 | ¥22,750 | ¥22,220 |
| Kyoto – Hiroshima | ¥11,940 | ¥11,300 (Hikari/Sakura) | ¥10,770 |
| Shin-Osaka – Hiroshima | ¥10,950 | ¥10,420 (Hikari/Sakura) | ¥9,890 |
| Tokyo – Kanazawa (Hokuriku) | ¥14,600 (Kagayaki/Hakutaka) | – | Hakutaka only |
| Kanazawa – Kyoto (via Tsuruga) | ¥7,720 (Tsurugi + Thunderbird) | – | No unreserved on Thunderbird |
| Kyoto – Osaka (JR Special Rapid) | ¥580 | – | ¥580 |
| Narita Airport – Tokyo (N’EX) | ¥3,140 | – | – |
Fares from the Tokaido–Sanyo fare table, Tokyo–Kyoto と Tokyo–Hiroshima fare pages (updated September 2026), the Hokuriku Shinkansen fare table (March 2026 revision), the Ekitan fare search for Kanazawa–Kyoto and Kyoto–Osaka, and JR East N’EX fares.
Single tickets also get cheaper if you book early. JR Central’s EX Hayatoku 21 early-booking fare for a Tokyo–Kyoto Nozomi seat is ¥12,430, ¥1,740 under the counter price. That makes the pass even harder to justify on short trips.
Is the JR Pass worth it for your route? The break-even table
We priced seven common itineraries on single reserved tickets (Nozomi where it runs) and compared each with the ¥50,000 7-day pass. All legs fit inside 7 consecutive days. Airport trains are left out of the rail total and shown separately.
| Itinerary (7 days) | Single tickets | vs ¥50,000 pass | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tokyo ⇄ Kyoto round trip | ¥28,340 | Singles ¥21,660 cheaper | Skip the pass |
| Golden Route: Tokyo → Kyoto → Osaka → Tokyo | ¥29,470 | Singles ¥20,530 cheaper | Skip the pass |
| Tokyo ⇄ Hiroshima round trip | ¥39,520 | Singles ¥10,480 cheaper | Skip the pass |
| Tokyo → Kanazawa → Kyoto → Osaka → Tokyo | ¥37,620 | Singles ¥12,380 cheaper | Skip the pass |
| Tokyo ⇄ Hakata (Fukuoka) round trip | ¥47,620 | Pass ¥2,380 cheaper (Hikari/Sakura only) | Borderline |
| Golden Route + Hiroshima: Tokyo → Kyoto → Hiroshima → Osaka → Tokyo | ¥51,780 | Pass ¥1,780 cheaper | Borderline, see combo below |
| Big loop: Tokyo → Kanazawa → Kyoto → Hiroshima → Osaka → Tokyo | ¥59,930 | Pass ¥9,930 cheaper | Buy the pass |
How the extras change the result
- Narita Express: the pass covers it. A singles traveller pays ¥3,140 each way, or ¥5,200 for the 14-day N’EX Tokyo Round Trip Ticket. Add ¥5,200 to the singles column if you land and leave at Narita.
- Nozomi: each Tokyo–Kyoto or Tokyo–Osaka Nozomi leg on the pass costs ¥4,960 more. Add two and the Golden Route + Hiroshima trip flips back to singles.
- Agency price: buy at ¥53,000 and every “pass cheaper” figure above drops by ¥3,000. The Hiroshima trip then only wins if you also ride N’EX, and the Fukuoka trip loses money either way.
- Small JR rides: the Yamanote Line in Tokyo, the JR Nara Line from Kyoto and the JR ferry to Miyajima are all JR, so they count towards the pass and push borderline trips its way.
Rule of thumb: if your single tickets come to less than about ¥45,000 for the week, skip the pass. Between ¥45,000 and ¥55,000 it is a coin toss, so pick on convenience. Above ¥55,000, buy it.
How many long trips do you need to break even?
Another way to check: count your long one-way Shinkansen legs. This is how many you need for each pass, using Nozomi or Kagayaki reserved fares.
| Pass (website price) | Tokyo–Kyoto legs | Tokyo–Osaka legs | Tokyo–Kanazawa legs | Tokyo–Hiroshima legs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 7 days, ¥50,000 | 3.5 | 3.4 | 3.4 | 2.5 |
| 14 days, ¥80,000 | 5.6 | 5.4 | 5.5 | 4.0 |
| 21 days, ¥100,000 | 7.1 | 6.8 | 6.8 | 5.1 |
The 14- and 21-day passes are the hardest to justify. Most longer trips have slow weeks spent inside one city, where the pass does nothing. A cheaper plan is often a 7-day pass for your busiest travel week, with single tickets either side.

Is the Green Car JR Pass worth it?
Only if you would book Green seats anyway. The 7-day Green pass is ¥20,000 more than the ordinary one. A Green Nozomi seat from Tokyo to Kyoto costs ¥19,040, against ¥14,170 for a standard reserved seat, so a Tokyo–Kyoto round trip in Green costs ¥9,740 more than in standard.
You need about four long Green legs in a week before the upgrade pays back. Remember that the Nozomi add-on is the same price in Green, but only Green pass holders can book it.
Which regional passes beat the JR Pass in 2026?
For most routes, a regional pass plus one or two single tickets is cheaper than the national pass. These are the current adult prices.
| Pass | Price (adult) | Days | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| JR Tokyo Wide Pass | ¥16,000 | 3 consecutive | Day trips from Tokyo: Nikko, Karuizawa, Kawaguchiko |
| JR East Pass (new, from 14 Mar 2026) | ¥35,000 / ¥50,000 | 5 / 10 consecutive | Tohoku, Nagano and Niigata from Tokyo |
| Hokuriku Arch Pass | ¥35,000 | 7 consecutive | Tokyo to Kansai the long way, via Kanazawa |
| Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass | ¥17,000 | 5 consecutive | Osaka, Kyoto, Himeji, Hiroshima, Miyajima |
| Kansai Wide Area Pass | ¥12,000 | 5 consecutive | Kansai plus Okayama, Kinosaki and Shirahama |
| Kansai Area Pass | ¥2,400–¥6,800 | 1–4 days | Kyoto, Osaka, Nara and Kobe by JR |
| JR Kyushu Rail Pass (All Kyushu) | ¥22,000 / ¥24,000 / ¥26,000 | 3 / 5 / 7 | Fukuoka, Nagasaki, Kumamoto, Kagoshima |
Children 6–11 pay half on all of these. None covers the Tokaido Shinkansen between Tokyo and Osaka, which is exactly why they cost so much less.
The combo that beats the pass on the Golden Route + Hiroshima
Take the Nozomi to Kyoto on a single ticket (¥14,170). Start a 5-day Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass (¥17,000) for Kyoto, Osaka, Hiroshima and Miyajima. Ride the Nozomi home from Shin-Osaka (¥14,720). Total: ¥45,890, against ¥50,000 for the JR Pass, and you get Nozomi on both long legs.
One catch: the area pass excludes the Tokaido Shinkansen, so go from Kyoto to Shin-Osaka by JR Special Rapid, then board the Sanyo Shinkansen. If you land at Narita, add ¥5,200 for N’EX and the two options cost almost the same.
Going via Kanazawa: the Hokuriku Arch Pass
The Arch Pass covers Narita or Tokyo to Kanazawa, Tsuruga, Kyoto and Osaka on the Hokuriku Shinkansen and JR West lines for 7 days. JR East’s page lists it at ¥35,000. JR West’s English page still showed ¥30,000 when we checked, so confirm the price at checkout. With the current Tsuruga transfer fares, a one-way Tokyo–Kanazawa–Kyoto run on single tickets is ¥22,320, so the Arch Pass only pays if you add side trips such as Toyama or Nagano.
Day trips from Tokyo and autumn deals
For Nikko, Karuizawa or Mount Fuji, the Tokyo Wide Pass is the one to look at: see our JR Tokyo Wide Pass day trips guide. If you are travelling this season, check our JR Autumn Unlimited Pass 2026 guide too. For more ideas, see our 電車で行く東京発日帰り旅行.

When is the JR Pass worth it even if it costs a little more?
Money is not the only test. On a borderline trip, the pass buys flexibility: you can change trains, add a day trip or switch cities without buying anything new. That matters if you plan as you go or travel with kids who set the pace.
It also matters less than it used to. Single tickets can be bought on your phone or at English-language machines in a minute, and early-booking fares beat the pass on most short trips. If your singles come within ¥2,000–¥3,000 of the pass price, pick the option that suits how you travel.
How do you buy and use the JR Pass in 2026?
- Buy on the official Japan Rail Pass website to get the ¥50,000 price. The price shown when you pay is the one that applies, even if prices rise before you travel.
- Collect or exchange the pass in Japan with your passport, then choose a start date. The 7, 14 or 21 days run consecutively.
- Reserve Hikari, Sakura and other seats for free on the JR Pass reservation site (JRP-R) or at JR stations, and book Nozomi or Mizuho add-ons at JR ticket machines or ticket offices.
- Children aged 6–11 travel on a half-price child pass. A child who is 11 when you pay can still use it after turning 12.
- The pass does not cover subways, private railways or buses run by non-JR companies, so you still need an IC card for most city travel.
JR Pass verdict by itinerary type

| Fly into Tokyo, out of Osaka, via Kanazawa | Single tickets, or the Hokuriku Arch Pass if you add side trips |

出発前に知っておきたいこと
Price your exact route
Add up your one-way legs from the fare table above. If the week totals under about ¥45,000, buy single tickets.
Buy on the official site
The website keeps the ¥50,000 price for now. Agencies have charged ¥53,000 since 1 October 2026.
Plan on Hikari
With a pass, every Nozomi leg Tokyo–Kyoto/Osaka costs ¥4,960 extra. Hikari is covered and still fast.
Avoid peak dates
At New Year, Golden Week and Obon, every Nozomi seat is reserved and add-on seats sell out early.
Time your 7 days
The pass runs on consecutive days. Start it on the day of your first long leg, not the day you land.
Mind the off-peak saving
Reserved single tickets cost ¥200 less in off-peak periods, which tips borderline trips further towards singles.
Is the JR Pass worth it? FAQ
Is the JR Pass worth it for Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka only?
No. The Tokyo–Kyoto–Osaka–Tokyo loop costs about ¥29,500 on single Nozomi tickets in 2026, against ¥50,000 for the 7-day pass. You would save around ¥20,000 by buying single tickets.
How much is the JR Pass in 2026?
On the official website: ¥50,000 (7 days), ¥80,000 (14 days) and ¥100,000 (21 days) for ordinary class. From 1 October 2026, overseas agencies charge ¥53,000, ¥84,000 and ¥105,000. Green passes are ¥70,000, ¥110,000 and ¥140,000 online.
Can I ride the Nozomi with a JR Pass?
Yes, with a special add-on ticket sold only to pass holders: ¥4,960 from Tokyo to Kyoto or Shin-Osaka, ¥6,500 to Hiroshima. Buy it at JR ticket machines or ticket offices up to one month ahead.
How many Shinkansen trips make the JR Pass worth it?
With the 7-day pass, about 3.5 one-way Tokyo–Kyoto legs or 2.5 Tokyo–Hiroshima legs in the same week. Fewer than that and single tickets are cheaper.
Is the JR Pass worth it with a trip to Hiroshima?
Only just. Tokyo–Kyoto–Hiroshima–Osaka–Tokyo costs ¥51,780 on singles, so the ¥50,000 pass saves ¥1,780, or about ¥7,000 if you also ride the Narita Express. Single tickets plus a ¥17,000 Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass cost ¥45,890.
Will the online JR Pass price go up?
Probably. JR Group says the official website keeps the old prices for a limited time and will announce when that ends. If you are sure you need a pass, buy it early.
Is there a cheaper alternative to the JR Pass?
Usually yes: single tickets booked early, or a regional pass such as the Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass (¥17,000), the JR East Pass (¥35,000 for 5 days) or the Hokuriku Arch Pass (¥35,000 for 7 days).
