Hirosaki Guide 2027: Castle, Apples and Cherry Blossom Three Weeks After Tokyo
Hirosaki is where Japan’s cherry blossom season goes after Tokyo has finished: Hirosaki Park usually peaks in the last third of April, around three weeks after the capital, and the 2027 Hirosaki Cherry Blossom Festival is confirmed for 16 April to 5 May 2027. Come for the 2,600 trees around a real Edo-period castle, stay for the apples, and note one thing the older guides miss: the castle keep has just been moved back onto its stone walls, and spring 2027 is one of the last chances to see it uncovered for years.
This Hirosaki guide is about timing. It covers the keep relocation, what each season actually offers, the costs, and how to get here from Tokyo. All facts were checked on 23 October 2026 against Hirosaki City, the Hirosaki tourism bureau and JR East.

Why is spring 2027 a special year for Hirosaki Castle?
Because the keep is back where it belongs. In 2015 the city lifted the three-storey keep off its base and moved it about 70 metres into the middle of the Honmaru so the bulging stone walls underneath could be taken apart and rebuilt, according to the Hirosaki City project leaflet. For ten years, every cherry blossom photo of Hirosaki showed a castle sitting in the wrong place.
The return move was scheduled for mid-July to November 2026. Residents pulled the 400-tonne building by rope at a public event from 21 to 23 August 2026, and machines are doing the rest. The Hirosaki tourism bureau says the keep should be back on its stone base by mid-November 2026, though the city notes the schedule may change.
Here is the catch. The interior has been closed since 24 November 2025, and the city’s February 2026 bulletin says it stays shut until fiscal year 2032 for seismic work. From summer of fiscal 2028 the whole keep will be wrapped in sheeting, so the city’s own schedule leaves the 2027 and 2028 springs as the window to see it on its walls with the blossoms.
| 時期 | What happens to the keep | 情報源 |
|---|---|---|
| 2015 | Moved about 70 m to the centre of the Honmaru for wall repairs | Hirosaki City leaflet |
| 24 Nov 2025 | Interior closed to visitors | Hirosaki tourism bureau notice |
| 21–23 Aug 2026 | Public pull-back event, keep moved by hand | Hirosaki City leaflet |
| By mid-Nov 2026 (planned) | Keep back on its original stone base | Hirosaki tourism bureau |
| Summer FY2028 (planned) | Keep fully covered for repairs; exterior hidden | Hirosaki City bulletin, Feb 2026 |
| Until FY2032 (planned) | Interior stays closed | Hirosaki City bulletin, Feb 2026 |
The present keep dates from 1810 and is the only Edo-period keep still standing in the Tohoku region, according to the National Diet Library. You can no longer climb it, but you can still walk the grounds, cross the bridges and photograph the keep from the moats.
When do the cherry blossoms peak in Hirosaki Park?
Usually in the last third of April. In 2025 the Somei Yoshino peaked from 23 to 27 April, the tourism bureau says, and the 2027 festival runs from 16 April to 5 May to cover early and late years. That is roughly three weeks after Tokyo.
We don’t repeat forecasts here. For the 2027 predictions by city, including Hirosaki, use our Japan cherry blossom forecast 2027, which is updated as the weather companies publish.
Why Hirosaki rather than another Tohoku spot? Density.
About 2,600 trees of 52 varieties fill the park, and the tourism bureau says each bud on the old trees carries four or five blossoms, which is why the branches look so heavy. The reason is the way the trees are pruned.
The apple connection: why Hirosaki’s cherry trees look different
Somei Yoshino normally decline after about 60 years. Hirosaki has more than 400 of them over 100 years old, according to the Government of Japan’s Highlighting Japan magazine. The park’s first management director, Kudo Nagamasa, noticed that cherries and apples are in the same rose family and borrowed pruning methods from local apple farmers.

The result is called the Hirosaki Method, and a team of park staff still uses it. The oldest Somei Yoshino in the park was planted in 1882 and stands inside the inner moat near the East Inner Gate, according to JNTO. So the castle, the apples and the blossoms are really one story.

What is Hirosaki like in each season?
Hirosaki is not a one-week town. Each season has a festival in the same park, and the apple calendar runs alongside.

Late autumn 2026: the Chrysanthemum and Autumn Foliage Festival
If you are reading this in late October 2026, this is the one you can still catch. The 2026 festival runs from 30 October to 8 November, with the Botanical Garden as the main venue. Stalls open 9:00–20:00 and projection mapping runs 17:30–19:30.
From 30 October to mid-November the maples and cherry trees near the south inner gate and Sannomaru are lit from 16:00 to 21:00. The Dotemachi Loop Bus runs extra evening services from 18:30 to 20:00 during the festival.
Winter: the Snow Lantern Festival
The 2026 edition was the 50th, held from 6 to 11 February with about 150 snow sculptures, mini igloos and a large snow statue of the keep, according to the official festival page. The 2027 dates were not on the official site when we checked on 23 October 2026, so book flexible rooms for early to mid February.
Hirosaki is cold and snowy in February, so pack proper boots. Our winter in Japan guide covers what to wear and how snow affects trains.
Summer: Hirosaki Neputa, not Aomori Nebuta
Hirosaki’s festival runs from 1 to 7 August every year, with about 80 floats, most of them fan-shaped with a warrior painting on the front, according to Aomori Prefecture’s tourism site. Parades start at 19:00 on the Dotemachi course from 1 to 4 August and the station-front course on 5 and 6 August, with a 10:00 daytime parade on 7 August.
It falls in the same week as Aomori’s Nebuta, about 30 minutes away by limited express, so you can do both. Our Aomori Nebuta and Tohoku summer festivals guide covers Aomori’s parade and how to plan the week.
Where do you go for apples in Hirosaki?
Hirosaki calls itself the city with the highest apple production in Japan, and the tourism bureau publishes a Hirosaki Apple Pie Guide Map for working through the local bakeries and cafes. In late October the orchards are full and the harvest is at its busiest.
Hirosaki City Apple Park

Most visitors only do the park. Give the town half a day more and it pays back.

- Saishoin five-storey pagoda: a temple pagoda that is far quieter than the park.
- Oirase Gorge and Lake Towada: the classic autumn add-on from Aomori Prefecture. See our Oirase Gorge autumn foliage guide.
How do you get from Tokyo to Hirosaki?
Take the Tohoku Shinkansen to Shin-Aomori, then a JR Ou Line train to Hirosaki. The Hirosaki tourism bureau gives about 3 hours 10 minutes for the Hayabusa from Tokyo and about 30 minutes for the Limited Express Tsugaru from Shin-Aomori.
| Option | 時間 | Cost (2026) | メモ |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hayabusa to Shin-Aomori, then Ou Line | About 4 hours | Check the JR East fare search | Fastest. Ou Line locals also run, about 36 minutes |
| JR East Pass (5 days) | Same trains | ¥35,000 adult | Covers the Tohoku Shinkansen; worth it for a return trip plus side trips |
| Overnight highway bus (Konan Bus) | About 9–9.5 hours | See operator | From Shinagawa or Ueno; Japanese-language booking |
| Fly to Aomori Airport, then bus | About 55 min by bus from the airport | See airline | Konan Bus airport service to Hirosaki |
Fares vary by route and season, so check the exact fare on JR East’s booking site. The JR East Pass costs ¥35,000 for five consecutive days or ¥50,000 for ten; our JR Pass guide explains when a pass beats single tickets.
In festival season, book Shinkansen seats as soon as they open. Late April overlaps with the start of Golden Week, and the northbound trains fill up.
Getting around Hirosaki
