When is Kinosaki Onsen crab season in 2026–27?

The snow-crab fishery off northern Hyogo opens on 6 November each year, a date Toyooka City (the city Kinosaki belongs to) uses for its opening-day ceremonies (Toyooka City). Male crab can be landed until 20 March, which the Hamasaka fishery cooperative と Kinosaki Tajimaya both give as the season end.

For winter 2026–27 that means 6 November 2026 to 20 March 2027. Ryokan crab plans often run a little longer: Nishimuraya Honkan and Kawaguchiya both sell crab plans from 7 November 2026 to 31 March 2027.

What is tagged Matsuba crab?

Matsuba crab is the local name for male snow crab from the Sea of Japan (Nishimuraya). The best crabs leave port with a small plastic tag clipped to a leg that names the landing port, so you can see where your dinner came from.

Tag colours differ by port, as Nishimuraya Honkan notes on its plans. Crab landed at Tsuiyama, 10 minutes by car from Kinosaki, carries a blue tag and is sold as Tsuiyama crab (Japan Tourism Agency).

A tagged crab costs more than an untagged one, and much more than imported frozen crab. If a plan only says “zuwai-gani” (snow crab) and never says Matsuba or tagged, assume it is not the top grade.

Seko-gani: the female crab you can only eat in November and December

Seko-gani is the female snow crab. It is much smaller than the male and prized for its roe, usually served packed back into the shell.

Female fishing closes at the end of December, so seko-gani is a November–December treat. Nishimuraya serves a seko-gani shell dish only until the end of December and changes the menu from January (plan page). Go in November or December if you want both crabs at one dinner.

How much is a crab kaiseki ryokan in Kinosaki? 2026–27 prices

Best ryokan and restaurants for Kinosaki Onsen crab season

1. Nishimuraya Honkan (Historic luxury ryokan)

The Lowdown: Kinosaki’s grand old inn, founded in the Ansei era of the Edo period. Its crab-season plans use Matsuba crab, the Ricca course specifies crab from Kasumi port, and every plan runs from 7 November 2026 to 31 March 2027.

The Vibe: Garden rooms, traditional service, no children under 10.

Price: From ¥90,200 to ¥147,400 per person (two sharing), plus ¥150 bath tax and a ¥280 bath fee on arrival.

2. Kinosaki Tajimaya (Mid-range ryokan)

The Lowdown: A 12-room inn in the town centre with three private onsen baths, free for guests in 45-minute slots. Its winter crab full course covers crab sashimi, boiled crab, grilled crab and crab hotpot, and the Yumepa bath pass is included.

Where: Central Kinosaki Onsen, walkable from the station

The Vibe: Small, friendly, good for couples who want a private bath.

Price: ¥47,300–¥48,400 per person (two sharing, tax included).

3. Kawaguchiya Kinosaki Riverside Hotel (Value crab stay)

The Lowdown: The cheapest named crab dinner here. The River crab kaiseki gives 1.5 snow crabs per person as sashimi, crab-suki hotpot and tempura, plus salt-grilled nodoguro (blackthroat seaperch). The digital Yumepa pass is included.

4. Terakawa (Crab restaurant and one-room inn)

The Lowdown: Run by Sengyo Terakawa, a Matsuba crab shop with about 50 years of history. It serves tag-certified Matsuba crab in season and opened a one-room inn, one group per night, in 2023.

Where: 111 Yushima, about two minutes from Kinosaki Onsen Station

The Vibe: Specialist and private. Restaurant open 11:30–13:30, reservation only.

5. Okesho Fish Market and Restaurant (Walk-in crab lunch)

The Lowdown: A century-old fish market with live crab downstairs and a restaurant upstairs. The menu runs from crab porridge and crab rice bowls to grilled crab, crab sashimi and a full crab course.

Where: Main store 132 Yushima; station-front store 88 Yushima

The Vibe: Busy, casual, no ryokan stay needed.

Price: Not published online. Mini kaiseki is for two or more and needs booking two days ahead.

💡 Japan Pro Tip: The main store opens 11:00–19:00 (last order 18:00) and closes on 1–2 January. The station-front store opens 11:00–15:00 and closes on Wednesdays. Hours were last updated in April 2025, so check before you go.

The Hanaakari crab trains from Osaka: dates, times and fares

JR West announced on 15 October 2026 that its Hanaakari sightseeing cars will be added to two winter limited expresses to the San’in coast (JR West press release, PDF). All Hanaakari seats are Green class.

JR West has not published a clear list of Kani Kani Hamakaze operating days, so we say “selected days” until it does. Check e5489 or a JR ticket office for your date.

JR West lists these as peak-season prices. Tickets go on sale at 10:00 one month before travel at JR ticket offices (Midori no Madoguchi), major travel agencies and the e5489 online service. Advance e5489 requests for Green reserved seats are for WESTER members only.

tabiwa train + crab packages

JR West’s tabiwa sells Hanaakari seats bundled with a crab lunch or a crab dinner stay at a hotel or ryokan, on selected Kani Kani Hamakaze days (Mondays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays).

Kinosaki Onsen from Osaka and Kyoto: the regular trains

You do not need the Hanaakari. The Limited Express Kounotori runs from Shin-Osaka and Osaka to Kinosaki Onsen via the Fukuchiyama Line in about 2 hours 40 minutes, with more than ten round trips a day (Ekitan). All seats are reserved.

From Kyoto, the train is not the Kounotori but the Limited Express Kinosaki, about 2.5 hours from Kyoto Station (Japan Tourism Agency).

Times are from JR West’s station timetable and can change in winter. If you came from Kyoto for the autumn leaves, an overnight stay beats a day trip: the last direct train to Kyoto leaves before 17:00.

Is the Kansai Wide Area Pass valid to Kinosaki Onsen?

Yes. Kinosaki Onsen is inside the JR Kansai WIDE Area Pass zone (JNTO), and reserved seats on the Kounotori can be used with the pass. It costs ¥12,000 for adults and ¥6,000 for children for five consecutive days (JR West).

The pass does not cover Green cars. Every Hanaakari seat is Green class, so you would pay a Green charge on top; confirm the exact amount at a JR ticket office. Comparing passes? Read is the JR Pass worth it.

Can you do Kinosaki Onsen crab season as a day trip?

Yes, and the Hanaakari timetable is built for it. The Kani Kani Hamakaze arrives at 12:27 and leaves at 15:58, which gives you about three and a half hours.

• 12:30: Walk two minutes to Terakawa for a booked Matsuba crab lunch (service ends 13:30), or head to Okesho, where walk-ins are welcome.
• 14:00: Buy a Yumepa pass and soak in one or two public baths.
• 15:40: Walk back to the station for the 15:58 departure, back in Osaka at 18:51.

On other days, take an early Kounotori from Shin-Osaka and the 18:53 back.

Kinosaki’s public baths in crab season: Yumepa pass and tattoos

Kinosaki has seven public baths (sotoyu), and you will want them after dinner. Single entry costs ¥800 for adults and ¥400 for children; the Yumepa day pass for all of them costs ¥1,500 for adults and ¥750 for children, sold at each bath (Kinosaki Onsen Tourism Association). Most ryokan hand out a Yumepa at check-in.

This winter six are open. Kono-yu has been closed for repairs from 11 May to 30 October 2026 (planned) (notice), and Satono-yu has been listed as closed for renovation since 1 April 2024 (Visit Kinosaki). Most open 7:00–23:00; Mandara-yu and Yanagi-yu open from 15:00.

Tattoos are fine. Visit Kinosaki states that all seven public baths “allow tattoos of all sizes, with no need to cover them up” (tattoo guide). Ryokan baths can have their own rules, so ask.
