Key Takeaways

  • Two themed rooms (No. 910 and No. 912), each 60 m² with three 100 × 200 cm beds, sleeping 1–4 people. The operators call them Japan’s first permanent Sumikko Gurashi character rooms.
  • Booking opens at 12:00 JST on Wed 28 October. That is 03:00 in London and 20:00 on Tue 27 October in Los Angeles.
  • You must register as a member before booking. Payment is by credit card, in advance, online only, and phone bookings are not accepted.
  • The price covers the room only. Meals and Fuji-Q ride tickets cost extra, though entry to the park itself is free.
  • The hotel sits next to Fuji-Q Highland’s new San-X Paradise area, which opened on 1 August 2026. Hotel guests can enter the park 15 minutes early.
  • The nearby Fujiyama Onsen hot spring is closed for the time being, so don’t plan your stay around it.

This guide covers what is inside each room, what a night really costs per person and a step-by-step way to book from overseas, with a time-zone table. It also covers the cancellation fees, how to get there from Tokyo, a 2-day plan with San-X Paradise and Lake Kawaguchiko, and what to do if the rooms sell out. We checked every fact against the hotel, Fuji-Q and Fujikyu official pages on 23 October 2026.

What are the Sumikko Gurashi rooms at Highland Resort?

Fujikyu announced the rooms in a press release on 21 October 2026. They are fixtures in the hotel rather than a pop-up, which is why Fujikyu calls them Japan’s first permanent Sumikko Gurashi rooms. Earlier Sumikko rooms in Japan ran for a set season and then closed. Each room has a different theme and its own “mission” for guests to complete.

Room 912: the sleepover room

Its Japanese name is Sumikko-tachi to issho ni otomarikai no oheya, roughly “the sleepover with the Sumikko gang” room. It has a corner styled on the characters’ café, Kissa Sumikko, a raised koagari seating platform and photo spots. At check-in the front desk gives you a small sign with your room key. You choose your favourite corner and put the sign down to claim it, which is a nod to the characters’ habit of claiming corners.

Room 910: the tapioca hunt room

Its Japanese name is Sumikko-tachi to tapioka sagashi no oheya. A wall of bookshelves, drawers and doors hides “tapioca” characters. You use a mission sheet to find them all. The idea is that you explore during the day and sleep “with” the characters at night.

Two practical details come from the hotel’s official FAQ on character rooms. First, the beds are pushed together with no gaps, and the hotel lends bed guards because the beds don’t touch the walls. Second, children of primary-school age or older cannot share a bed with a parent. Younger children can share, up to the number of beds.

How much does the Sumikko Gurashi room cost?

The official rate is from ¥86,000 per night, and the hotel says it “varies by date and number of guests”. The FAQ confirms the price covers the room only, with no meals. Guests aged 12 and over also pay a ¥150 bathing tax each. The press release does not say whether ¥86,000 is per room or per person, but the hotel’s FAQ says its rates are room charges, quoted per room for up to two guests. So ¥86,000 is a per-room starting price, and the rate for three or four guests may be higher. The split below is our estimate only, assuming the room still costs ¥86,000.

Guests in the roomEstimated per person (if the room stays at ¥86,000)Plus
1¥86,000¥150 bathing tax (age 12+)
2¥43,000¥150 each (age 12+)
3About ¥28,700¥150 each (age 12+)
4¥21,500¥150 each (age 12+)

How does that compare with a standard room? On 23 October we checked the hotel’s official booking site for the night of Sat 28 November, searching for one adult in one room. The cheapest plan was ¥47,700 for a 27 m² Mt Fuji-view Standard Twin with breakfast, on a 10% early-booking discount. The same room with no meals was ¥49,500, and a 30 m² Superior Twin with no meals was ¥54,900. Those twins sleep up to three. The Sumikko room costs more, but it is twice the size and sleeps four. The more people share it, the better the value.

What’s not included: meals, Fuji-Q ride tickets and transport. Fuji-Q Highland entry is free, but you need a ticket to ride. A One-Day Pass costs ¥6,000–7,900 for adults (18–64) and ¥4,400–5,100 for primary-school children, depending on the date.

How do you book the Sumikko Gurashi room from overseas?

You can only book on the hotel’s own site. There is no phone booking and no listing on travel agent or booking sites. With two rooms and a lot of fans, expect dates to go within minutes. Follow these steps.

  • Step 1: register now, not on the day. Booking requires a member account. Sign up on the Fujikyu booking site before 28 October. The site has an English option. Make sure you can log in.
  • Step 2: have a credit card ready. Character rooms are paid by credit card, online and in advance only. Tell your bank you’ll be making a charge in Japan so the payment isn’t blocked.
  • Step 3: open the official room page early. Go to the Sumikko Gurashi Room page, which has a separate booking button for each room. Before 12:00 JST the buttons only lead to the general plan list.
  • Step 4: pick your room and dates at 12:00 JST. Have two or three backup dates ready, and know your preferred room (910 or 912).
  • Step 5: check your booking. You can view your booking online. To change dates, the hotel asks you to make a new booking and cancel the old one. Cancellation fees apply to all changes.

Los Angeles (PDT)Tue 27 Oct, 20:00

Europe has already moved its clocks back by 28 October, but North America has not. The London and Paris times above take this into account.

Which dates can you book?

TBA. The hotel has not said how far ahead the Sumikko rooms will open on 28 October. Its FAQ says character rooms normally go on sale in monthly batches. At 12:00 on the 1st of each month, dates are added up to the end of that month one year later. If the Sumikko rooms follow that rule, the next batch would be released at 12:00 JST on Tuesday 1 December 2026 (Expected).

💡 Japan Pro Tip: Weekends and Japanese school holidays will go first. If your dates are flexible, try a weekday stay, but first check the closure dates further down. Fuji-Q Highland is closed on Thu 10 December 2026, and an empty park would spoil the trip.

What are the cancellation fees?

When you cancelFee
Once the booking is complete10% of the booking amount
One month before to the day before your stay20%
On the day of your stay80%
No-show100%

Unusually, you pay a 10% fee even if you cancel straight away, so only book dates you are confident about. These terms come from the hotel’s official FAQ for character rooms. Check the plan page at checkout for the final wording.

How do you get to Highland Resort from Tokyo?

The hotel is at 5-6-1 Shinnishihara, Fujiyoshida, Yamanashi, and is joined to Fuji-Q Highland. A basement passage leads into the park, about a 5-minute walk via the La Ville de Gaspard et Lisa area. The highway bus is the cheapest and simplest way there, because its terminal is right in front of the hotel.

Bus: La official Fujikyu timetable shows departures from Busta Shinjuku from 6:45 in the morning. Arriving at Fuji-Q Highland, the bus stops at the highway bus terminal in front of Highland Resort. Some services run only on days the park is open, so check the timetable notes. Child fares are half price.

Train: La Fuji Excursion runs four round trips a day from Shinjuku, plus a seasonal extra. It is the only direct train, and it stops at Fuji-Q Highland Station. Every seat is reserved. The Japan Rail Pass covers only the JR section as far as Otsuki. You pay the Fujikyu Railway section separately, according to Ekitan. What can you do on a 2-day Sumikko trip to Fuji-Q?

Pair the room with San-X Paradise, which opened inside Fuji-Q Highland on Sat 1 August 2026. Spend the second day at Lake Kawaguchiko, one stop away. The plan below works on a Saturday–Sunday stay.

Day 1: Shinjuku to San-X Paradise

  • Morning: take the 6:45 bus from Busta Shinjuku, arriving at Fuji-Q Highland at 8:25. Hotel guests can enter the park 15 minutes before opening on the day of their stay and the next day. Register for face recognition in the hotel basement first. Early entry is not a priority boarding pass for rides.
  • San-X Paradise: the 6,500 m² area has two rides. Sumikko Gurashi Balloon Cupcake is a spinning ride for riders 90 cm and over, with no children under 3. Rilakkuma’s Makumaku Sweets Viking is a swinging pendulum ride for riders 120 cm and over, with no preschoolers. Younger or smaller riders on both rides need a companion of junior-high age or older. The area also has the MEMORY STUDIO greeting photo studio, the WAKUWAKU CARNIVAL arcade games and Clover Palace Shop, which stocks more than 150 park-exclusive items. The 180-seat San-x Paradise Cafe & Diner is there too. An indoor walk-through attraction, San-X Paradise Secret Party!, opens on Sat 14 November 2026.
  • Afternoon: check in. The hotel’s FAQ gives check-in from 15:00 and check-out by 11:00, and its other character-room plans use the same times; the Sumikko plan page hadn’t confirmed its own times when we checked. Start the room mission before dinner. The hotel’s buffet and restaurants are open to guests on room-only bookings.

Day 2: Fuji-Q rides or Lake Kawaguchiko

  • Early entry again: early entry applies on the morning after your stay too, so you can do the rides you missed before the queues build.
  • Lake Kawaguchiko: Kawaguchiko Station is one stop from Fuji-Q Highland, about 5 minutes on the Shinjuku buses that carry on there. The lakeshore gives you the classic Mt Fuji view.
  • Chureito Pagoda: this pagoda with Mt Fuji behind it is also in Fujiyoshida, the same city as the hotel. Expect stairs and crowds on clear mornings.
  • Hot spring: le Fujiyama Onsen hot spring next to the park is closed for the time being for building works. It closed for renovation in June 2026 and stayed shut after earthquake damage. While it is closed, hotel guests can use the large bath at the sister Hotel Mount Fuji by Lake Yamanakako for free, but you must get there by car or taxi. The hotel’s booking site is also selling special-price plans for the period the onsen is shut. Plan a hot spring elsewhere, or see our best onsen towns in Japan.
  • Return: Fuji Excursion trains leave Fuji-Q Highland for Shinjuku at 14:11, 15:01, 16:51 and 17:44, every day. One more train runs at 15:42 on weekdays (until Mon 30 November) or 16:15 at weekends and holidays (until Sun 29 November).

Closure dates to avoid (notice on the hotel’s official booking site): Fuji-Q Highland and Fujiyama Museum are closed on Thu 10 December 2026. Both also close on Wed 13, Thu 14, Wed 20, Thu 21, Wed 27 and Thu 28 January 2027, and on Thu 4 February 2027. Fujiyama Museum is also closed from Mon 7 to Wed 16 December 2026 to change its exhibition. Fuji-Q’s operating calendar lists each day’s opening hours.

💡 Japan Pro Tip: If your group will spend a full day in Tokyo before or after Fuji, book it now while you’re planning. A guided food tour or an evening experience with a local host fills a day with no wasted time. You can book them directly on Japan Pro in English.

What if the Sumikko Gurashi room is sold out?

  • Try the next release. If the monthly rule applies, new dates go on sale at 12:00 JST on the 1st of each month (Expected).
  • Look for cancellations. Changing dates means rebooking and cancelling, so rooms can come back. Check the room page now and then.
  • Book another character room. The same hotel has Thomas, NARUTO and Fujikyu Line rooms. See its guest room list.
  • Book a standard room and go to San-X Paradise anyway. You still get free entry to the park and early entry as a hotel guest. Fuji-Q’s ticket page also lists Fujikyu Travel packages that combine a highway bus, a hotel and a One-Day Pass.
  • Do it as a day trip. Take the 6:45 bus out and an evening bus back. See our JR Tokyo Wide Pass day trips guide for other easy trips from the city.

Are there other Sumikko Gurashi hotel rooms in Japan?

Not permanent ones, which is why this opening matters. Hotel New Otani Tokyo ran a Sumikko Gurashi Room plan from 1 August 2023 to 31 January 2024. It was limited to three rooms a night, and its page now says the plan has ended. If you like character stays, also read our guide to the Poké Ball hotel in Hokkaido.

Sumikko Gurashi hotel room FAQ

How much is the Sumikko Gurashi hotel room at Fuji-Q?

From ¥86,000 per room per night, with no meals, according to the official Fujikyu press release. The hotel quotes rates per room, not per person, and the rate varies by date and number of guests. Guests aged 12 and over also pay a ¥150 bathing tax each, and meals cost extra.

How do I book the Sumikko Gurashi room from overseas?

Book online only through the Highland Resort Hotel & Spa official site, from 12:00 JST on Wednesday 28 October 2026. Register as a member in advance and pay by credit card online. Phone bookings are not accepted.

Is Fuji-Q Highland entry included with the Sumikko Gurashi room?

Fuji-Q Highland has free entry for everyone, but rides need tickets, which the room rate does not include. A One-Day Pass costs ¥6,000 to ¥7,900 for adults depending on the date. Hotel guests can enter the park 15 minutes before opening on the day of their stay and the next day.

How do I get to Highland Resort Hotel from Tokyo?

Take the highway bus from Busta Shinjuku to Fuji-Q Highland. It takes about 100 minutes and costs ¥2,200, or ¥2,000 if you pay online, and it stops in front of the hotel. Or take the all-reserved Fuji Excursion limited express from Shinjuku to Fuji-Q Highland Station, which takes about 2 hours.

What if the Sumikko Gurashi room is sold out?

Check for cancellations and for new dates, which the hotel normally releases at 12:00 JST on the 1st of each month. You can also book the hotel’s Thomas, NARUTO or Fujikyu Line character rooms, or a standard room, and still visit San-X Paradise inside Fuji-Q Highland.

Are there other Sumikko Gurashi hotel rooms in Japan?

Fujikyu says these are the first permanent Sumikko Gurashi rooms in Japan. Earlier rooms, such as Hotel New Otani Tokyo’s plan from 1 August 2023 to 31 January 2024, were limited-time and have ended.

Should you book the Sumikko Gurashi room?

If you’re travelling as a family of three or four and your children love San-X, yes. If the ¥86,000 starting rate also applied to four guests, it would work out at about ¥21,500 each (our estimate; the rate can rise with more guests), for a 60 m² themed room right next to San-X Paradise. Register your account today, set an alarm for 12:00 JST on Wednesday 28 October, and book the rest of your Japan trip with Japan Pro.

Japan was named Favourite Country for a Holiday at Ultratravel’s ULTRAs 2026 for the second year running (JNTO, 9 October 2026). A Fuji character stay is a good reason to see why.
