Echigo-Tsumari Art Field: 10 Works to See Before the 2027 Triennale
The Echigo-Tsumari Art Field is about 200 artworks spread across 760 km² of rice terraces, villages and closed schools in southern Niigata. You don’t need to wait for the Triennale to see them: the museums and many outdoor works open every year, and the next full festival is confirmed for 17 July to 7 November 2027.
The catch is timing. The 2026 season ends on Sunday 8 November, most outdoor works then close for the snow, and what stays open runs on reduced days. This guide shows what you can actually see from late autumn 2026 through 2027, how to get there from Tokyo by train, and how far you get without a car.

10th Triennale opens

What is the Echigo-Tsumari Art Field, and why go when there’s no Triennale?
Echigo-Tsumari is the region around Tokamachi City and Tsunan Town, at the southern tip of Niigata Prefecture. The Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale has run every three years since 2000, and many commissioned works stayed after each edition. The organisers split the region into six areas: Tokamachi, Kawanishi, Nakasato, Matsudai, Matsunoyama and Tsunan.
In non-festival years, the Echigo-Tsumari Art Field runs a year-round programme. The 2026 edition runs from 25 April to 8 November 2026, with venues closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays except public holidays (Niigata Prefecture tourism; official programme).
The upside of an off year is space. During a Triennale, popular works have queues and timed tickets. Outside it, you can stand almost alone in a closed schoolhouse or a mountain tunnel and take your time.
Which Echigo-Tsumari artworks can you see outside Triennale years?
These are the works that matter most to a first visit, with the hours the official site lists for the 2026–27 off-season. Hours and fees come from each work’s official page and the winter notice published on 16 October 2026 (Echigo-Tsumari Art Field).

| Hachi & Seizo Tashima Museum of Picture Book Art | Tokamachi | Check on site | Open to 23 Nov 2026, then closed for winter |
Children’s fees are roughly half. Kyororo is free for junior high school students and younger (official Kyororo page).
MonET: the easiest start
MonET (Museum on Echigo-Tsumari) is the hub museum, about 10 minutes on foot from Tokamachi Station (MonET). Leandro Erlich’s courtyard work Palimpsest: pond of sky is the headline, and the building holds 15 permanent pieces plus a seasonal special exhibition. It is also the information centre, so pick up a map and confirm what’s open before heading out.
Matsudai NOHBUTAI: the best walk
The NOHBUTAI building connects directly to Matsudai Station on the Hokuhoku Line. From it, about 40 works line a roughly 2 km route up to Matsudai Castle, including Kusama’s flower sculpture and Kabakov’s The Rice Fields (official access overview). A shuttle runs as needed between NOHBUTAI and Matsudai Castle (about 7 minutes) for ticket holders (NOHBUTAI page).
Inside, the Echigo Matsudai Satoyama Shokudo serves a local buffet. Its New Rice Buffet runs from 19 September to 30 November 2026, closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
Tunnel of Light: go after 20 November and pay less
The Kiyotsu Gorge Tunnel is a 750 m walking tunnel that Ma Yansong turned into an art piece for the 2018 Triennale. Adult entry is ¥1,200 until 20 November 2026 and ¥1,000 from 21 November (Tunnel of Light page). The last 2026 dates that needed advance timed tickets ended on 3 November.
The Last Class and House of Light: book your day around them
The Last Class fills the former Higashikawa Elementary School; Boltanski reworked it after finding the school snowed in during the record snowfall of winter 2006 (artwork page). From 28 November 2026 it opens only on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, so a weekday winter trip will miss it.
James Turrell’s House of Light is an artwork you can visit by day or sleep in overnight. Overnight bookings go through its own site, linked from the official page; check the rates there, as they depend on group size and the day.

How do you get to Echigo-Tsumari from Tokyo?
Take the Joetsu Shinkansen from Tokyo to Echigo-Yuzawa (75–90 minutes), then the Hokuhoku Line to Tokamachi (about 30 minutes). Japan-guide puts the whole trip at about two hours and about ¥7,500 with a good connection, and warns that good connections are rare (japan-guide).
| Leg | Line | Time | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tokyo → Echigo-Yuzawa | JR Joetsu Shinkansen | 75–90 min | Covered by the Japan Rail Pass |
| Echigo-Yuzawa → Tokamachi | Hokuhoku Line (Hokuetsu Express) | About 30 min | About half of trains start at Muikamachi, not Echigo-Yuzawa |
| Tokamachi ↔ Matsudai | Hokuhoku Line | About 10 min | Roughly one train an hour |
| Echigo-Yuzawa → Tunnel of Light | Express bus toward Morimiyanohara | About 25 min + 30 min walk | Get off at Kiyotsukyo Entrance; limited service |
The Hokuhoku Line is a private railway, so the Japan Rail Pass does not cover the section between Muikamachi and Tokamachi; you pay that part separately (japan-guide). According to GLTJP’s JR East Pass guide, the JR East Pass (Nagano, Niigata area) does include the Hokuetsu Express lines (GLTJP).
Two timing details save real time. The Hokuhoku Line’s 14 March 2026 timetable notes a standard 6-minute transfer from the Shinkansen to local trains at Echigo-Yuzawa (Hokuhoku Line timetable), and the Hokuhoku Line timetable PDF shows which trains run through. Check it before you book a Shinkansen, not after.
Echigo-Yuzawa is also a ski town; to pair art with snow, see our ski day trip from Tokyo guide. Wondering whether a pass pays off for this route? See is the JR Pass worth it and the 2027 Shinkansen fare changes.
Can you see the Echigo-Tsumari Art Field without a car?
Partly, yes. The official site and japan-guide both say a car is the best way to reach the mountain works, and buses are sparse (How To Get Around). But two of the strongest clusters, Tokamachi and Matsudai, are station-side and walkable.
What works on foot and by train
- Tokamachi: MonET is 10 minutes’ walk from the station. Taxis wait at both the east and west exits.
- Matsudai: NOHBUTAI is attached to the station, and the 2 km art trail starts at its door.
- Tokamachi to Matsudai: 10 minutes by Hokuhoku Line, about once an hour.
- Tunnel of Light: reachable by the Echigo-Yuzawa bus plus a 30-minute walk, or by official tour.
Rental e-bikes (late April to November only)
The tourist information centres at Tokamachi Station (west exit) and next to Matsudai Station rent electric bikes. A city-style SATOCHARI costs ¥2,000 a day and a sports e-bike ¥3,000 a day; rentals run 9:00–17:00 from late April to November, not in snow (Tokamachi tourism).
One rule catches people out: you can only ride within the area of the office you rented from. You cannot cycle from Tokamachi to Matsudai and drop the bike there. Helmets are free, and in-person rentals are cash only.
Taxis, rental cars and tours
Taxi firms serve Tokamachi, Matsudai and Tsunan stations, and rental car outlets sit next to Tokamachi and Echigo-Yuzawa stations (official list). You need an International Driving Permit. For a no-stress day, the official bus tours start and end at Echigo-Yuzawa Station and run mainly on weekends and holidays (official tours).
Informez-vous avant de partir
Tuesday and Wednesday
Most venues close on both days, all year. Plan a Thursday-to-Monday trip.
Paper tickets only
Online purchases must be swapped for a paper ticket at a venue before use.
The Common Ticket expires
The ¥2,500 2026 Common Ticket is valid only to 8 November 2026. After that, pay at each venue.
Bikes stay in their area
E-bikes can't cross between the Tokamachi and Matsudai rental areas.
Check snow on the day
The Tunnel of Light and outdoor works can close at short notice after heavy snowfall.
Carry cash
In-person e-bike rentals are cash only, so don't rely on cards in the countryside.
What’s open at Echigo-Tsumari in late autumn and winter 2026–27?
This is heavy-snow country. The Kyororo museum’s steel body is built to carry 2,000 tons of snow, which tells you what January looks like. Here is how the season unfolds, based on the official winter notice.
| Dates | What’s open | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Now – Sun 8 Nov 2026 | Full 2026 programme: about 200 works, museums, tours | Last chance to use the ¥2,500 Common Ticket |
| 9 – 23 Nov 2026 | Year-round venues, plus Picture Book Art museum, Matsudai Castle and Kabakov’s Monument of Tolerance | Those three close for winter after 23 Nov |
| 24 Nov – Dec 2026 | MonET, NOHBUTAI, Tunnel of Light, Kyororo, House of Light; The Last Class on weekends from 28 Nov | Some outdoor works close from 24 Nov, or earlier with heavy snow |
| Year end | Most venues close | MonET 26 Dec–1 Jan; NOHBUTAI 26 Dec–6 Jan; The Last Class 21 Dec–8 Jan |
| 30 Jan – 7 Mar 2027 | Echigo-Tsumari Winter 2027 programme | NUNAGAWA Campus opens on weekends and holidays, 31 Jan – 7 Mar |
If you go in deep winter, base yourself in Tokamachi and stick to MonET, NOHBUTAI and the Tunnel of Light. For a bath afterwards, the Akashi no Yu exchange centre stays open through winter, from 11:00 to 20:00 between 3 December and 28 February (winter notice). Our winter in Japan guide covers clothing and snow travel.

A two-day Echigo-Tsumari plan without a car
This works from late April to early November, and in a reduced form until the snow sets in. It assumes a Thursday-to-Saturday or a Saturday-to-Monday trip.
Day 1: Tokamachi
- Morning Shinkansen to Echigo-Yuzawa, then the Hokuhoku Line to Tokamachi.
- Drop bags, walk 10 minutes to MonET, and see Erlich’s courtyard work and the permanent collection.
- In season, rent an e-bike at the west exit for the Tokamachi-area works; otherwise, take a taxi to House of Light for its 11:30–15:00 viewing window.
- Stay in Tokamachi.
Day 2: Matsudai
- Ten minutes by train to Matsudai. NOHBUTAI opens at 10:00.
- Walk the field museum trail to Matsudai Castle; use the shuttle if you’re short of time.
- Lunch at the Satoyama Shokudo buffet inside NOHBUTAI.
- Train back towards Echigo-Yuzawa for the Shinkansen home.
Add the Tunnel of Light on a third morning via the Echigo-Yuzawa bus, or join an official tour. If you’d rather stay closer to Tokyo, our Des excursions d'une journée depuis Tokyo en train list has easier art and nature options.
Echigo-Tsumari Art Field FAQ
When is the next Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale?
The 10th Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale runs from 17 July to 7 November 2027. Venues close on Tuesdays and Wednesdays except 10 and 11 August and 3 November.
Can I visit the Echigo-Tsumari Art Field in a non-Triennale year?
Yes. Museums such as MonET and Matsudai NOHBUTAI open year-round, and many outdoor works open each spring to autumn. In 2026 the season runs from 25 April to 8 November.
How long does it take to get from Tokyo to Tokamachi?
About two hours with a good connection: 75 to 90 minutes on the Joetsu Shinkansen to Echigo-Yuzawa, then about 30 minutes on the Hokuhoku Line. Good connections are not frequent, so check the timetable.
Is the Hokuhoku Line covered by the Japan Rail Pass?
No. The Japan Rail Pass does not cover the Hokuhoku Line between Muikamachi and Tokamachi, so you pay that section separately. The JR East Pass (Nagano, Niigata area) does cover it.
Do I need a car for Echigo-Tsumari?
Not for Tokamachi and Matsudai, where the main venues are next to the stations. For remote works, a car, taxi or official tour is far easier, as local buses are infrequent.
What is open in winter?
MonET, Matsudai NOHBUTAI, the Tunnel of Light, Kyororo and House of Light stay open with reduced days, and The Last Class opens on weekends and holidays. Most outdoor works close for the snow, and venues shut over New Year.
How much is the 2027 ETAT Passport?
Adults pay 4,000 yen early bird (28 February to 16 July 2027) or 5,000 yen during the festival. Elementary and junior high students pay 1,000 or 2,000 yen.
Which day of the week should I avoid?
Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Most venues close on both days unless it’s a public holiday.
