To beat the crowds in Arashiyama, arrive at JR Saga-Arashiyama before 8:00, walk the bamboo grove first, and be at Tenryu-ji’s gate when it opens at 8:30. By 10:00 the main street and the grove fill with tour groups, so spend the middle of the day on the river or in the quieter Sagano temples to the north, and save Togetsukyo Bridge for late afternoon.

Arashiyama has three railway stations, and which one you use decides how your day goes. This guide works through them one by one: what is near each, when to be there, and what it costs. It also covers the big change coming: the Sagano Romantic Train’s current carriages make their last run on 29 December 2026, with new ones due in spring 2027. Everything was checked between 19 and 21 October 2026.

Which Arashiyama station should you use?

All three stations are within about 15 minutes’ walk of each other, but they sit in different parts of town. Pick by where you want to start.

Hankyu ArashiyamaKyoto-Kawaramachi or Karasuma, change at Katsura, about 20 min¥240Togetsukyo Bridge, Monkey Park, riverside

Fares and times are from japan-guide.com‘s February 2026 update. The JR line is covered by the Japan Rail Pass (see is the JR Pass worth it?), and IC cards such as ICOCA and Suica work on JR and Hankyu, as explained in our IC card guide.

Avoid the bus if you can. Kyoto city buses charge a flat ¥230 but crawl through Arashiyama traffic at weekends, and the one-day bus pass is no longer sold. Our Gion-Shijo station guide explains the 2024–26 bus changes.

How do you beat the crowds in Arashiyama?

Arashiyama is one of the busiest places in Kyoto, and in autumn it gets worse. Three rules make the biggest difference.

  • Go early. The bamboo grove is a public path with no gate or ticket, so you can walk it at dawn.
  • Go against the flow. Most people arrive at Randen or Hankyu and walk north. Arrive at JR Saga-Arashiyama and walk south.
  • Book what can be booked. Romantic Train seats and river boats sell out. On Monday 19 October 2026, a weekday, the boat company posted that same-day tickets were already gone, per Hozugawa Kudari.

Station 1: JR Saga-Arashiyama, the early-start station

This is the best station for a dawn start. It is 5–10 minutes from central Arashiyama, and Torokko Saga, the start of the Sagano Romantic Train, is right next to it.

The bamboo grove before 8:00

Walk south-west from the station to the top of the grove. You reach the quiet end first, while everyone else enters from the crowded main-street end. The groves cover an area roughly 500 metres long, split by a paved path between Tenryu-ji and the JR tracks, according to Inside Kyoto. Nonomiya Shrine sits at the eastern side.

After about 9:00 the path fills, and from 10:00 it can be shoulder to shoulder. If you arrive late, see the Tenryu-ji tip below: its north gate lets you enter the grove halfway along and skip the busiest part.

Okochi Sanso: the quietest garden in Arashiyama

At the top of the bamboo grove is the villa garden of Okochi Denjiro, a star of samurai films. He designed it himself and built it from the age of 34 until his death at 64, spending most of his film earnings on it, per Tabi-Mag. The garden looks out to Mount Hiei and over Kyoto, and four of its buildings are registered tangible cultural properties, per Kyoto Prefecture.

Entry is ¥1,000 including matcha and a monaka sweet, 9:00–17:00, per japan-guide.com. Most bamboo-grove visitors turn back before it, which is why it stays calm. The buildings themselves are viewed from outside.

Sagano Romantic Train: 2026 season, fares and the switch to new trains

The Sagano Romantic Train (Sagano Torokko) runs 7.3 km from Torokko Saga to Torokko Kameoka along the Hozu Gorge, in about 25 minutes. It stops at Torokko Arashiyama and Torokko Hozukyo on the way, per the Sagano Scenic Railway.

Same-day ticketsStation counters from about 8:35 (Saga), 8:50 (Arashiyama), 9:10 (Kameoka)

The season and light-up dates are from the Kyoto City official travel guide. The final day of the current trains is from the operator’s September 2026 notice. The fare is from Walkerplus; the operator’s own fare page confirms a flat fare regardless of distance, so check the amount when you book.

Car No. 5, The Rich, is an open-air car without window glass. In rain it gets wet, umbrellas are not allowed, and there is no refund for weather. Once seats sell out, a limited number of standing tickets go on sale. Suitcases are fine if their three sides add up to about 120 cm or less.

What happens in 2027? New trains debut in spring 2027, per the operator’s announcement. JR West’s design release describes a five-car set (one locomotive and four coaches) with glass ceilings and side walls, wider seats and aisles, four-language displays, and a group room with veranda-style benches in car 4. The 2027 start date and fares had not been announced on 21 October 2026.

Quieter Sagano temples to the north

When the main street is at its busiest, walk north into Sagano. In autumn 2026, Nison-in opens early for special morning viewings on 22, 23 and 29 November, and Daikaku-ji has a special palace hall viewing from 9 October to 7 December, according to the Kyoto City guide. Check timings on the day.

Station 2: Randen Arashiyama, the main-street station

The Randen tram stops right on Arashiyama’s main street. This is where the crowds start, so use it to arrive early or to leave late, not at 11:00.

Tenryu-ji: hours, fees and the north-gate trick

Tenryu-ji is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, listed in 1994. Its Sogenchi pond garden was the first site in Japan designated both a Historic Site and a Place of Special Scenic Beauty, per Tenryu-ji.

Tenryu-jiDetails (2026)
Hours8:30–17:00, last entry 16:50
Garden¥500 (high school and up); ¥300 (elementary and middle school)
Halls+¥300 on top of the garden ticket
Hatto (Cloud Dragon painting)¥500 extra; weekends, holidays and set spring and autumn periods
Hatto closed28–30 October 2026 and 2 January 2027

Prices are from the Tenryu-ji visitor page. Here is the trick: Tenryu-ji has three ticket offices, including one at its north gate. Walk through the garden and out of the north gate, and you come straight into the middle of the bamboo grove, skipping the crowded main-street end. Inside Kyoto recommends the garden over the halls if you are short on time.

The main street: eat early, or picnic

Restaurants on the main street queue from midday. Eat before 11:00 or after 14:00. Or do what Inside Kyoto suggests: buy food at a bakery or convenience store and eat in Kameyama Park, the hill park at the west end of the river, which has a viewpoint over the gorge.

Station 3: Hankyu Arashiyama, the river station

Hankyu Arashiyama is on the south bank, across Togetsukyo Bridge from the main street. It has one staffed ticket gate, per Hankyu. Trains run via Katsura, where you change for Kyoto-Kawaramachi or Osaka.

Togetsukyo Bridge

The bridge is Arashiyama’s postcard view, with the wooded mountain behind. It is busiest at midday. Late afternoon is better, and it is on your way back to Hankyu.

Iwatayama Monkey Park

The Monkey Park is on the hill above the south bank, a few minutes from Hankyu Arashiyama. The Japanese macaques here roam free; you are the visitor.

The park is open 9:00–16:30 from 15 March to 30 September and 9:00–16:00 from 1 October to 14 March, with the summit area open half an hour later. Entry is ¥550 for adults and ¥250 for ages 4–15, per the park’s website. It can close early when the monkeys head back up the mountain, and it shuts in heavy rain or snow.

Getting to the top is a steep walk of about 10 minutes, so bring water. The view down over Kyoto from the summit is one of the best in Arashiyama.

Hozugawa river boats: how does the train-and-boat loop work?

The classic Arashiyama loop is the Romantic Train up the gorge to Kameoka, then a traditional boat back down. The boat trip covers about 16 km in about two hours, from Kameoka to Arashiyama, per Hozugawa Kudari. Boatmen steer with poles and oars through rapids, then land you near Togetsukyo.

Fares are from the ticket page and times from the timetable. Online booking is at the standard fare only; disability discounts are given at the counter. The timetable does not yet show sailings after 13 December 2026, so call 0771-22-5846 (8:00–17:00) for late December.

The boats leave from near JR Kameoka Station. If you take the Romantic Train up, allow time to get from Torokko Kameoka to the boarding point; the boat company’s access page has maps. In autumn, book the boat first and fit the train around it.

A crowd-beating day in Arashiyama, in order

  • 7:30 JR Saga-Arashiyama. Walk to the bamboo grove.
  • 8:00 Bamboo grove, top to bottom.
  • 8:30 Tenryu-ji garden at opening, entering by the north gate.
  • 9:30 Back up to Okochi Sanso for matcha.
  • 10:30 Torokko Saga: Romantic Train to Kameoka (booked a month ahead).
  • 11:30 Hozugawa boat back to Arashiyama (booked ahead).
  • 13:30 Late lunch on the main street, or a picnic in Kameyama Park.
  • 15:00 Cross Togetsukyo; Monkey Park before last entry.
  • 16:30 Hankyu Arashiyama back to the city.

Skip the train-and-boat loop and you can do the rest in half a day. Coming from the airport? Our Kansai Airport to Kyoto guide covers the Haruka and buses.

How do you avoid the rush when leaving?

Day-trippers leave at the same time, and the stations nearest the main street take the strain. A few habits help.

  • Leave from the station you did not arrive at. If the main street is packed, walk 10–15 minutes to JR Saga-Arashiyama or across the bridge to Hankyu.
  • Top up your IC card in the morning, so you do not queue at ticket machines on the way out.
  • Stay for the light-up. From 24 October to 29 December 2026 the Romantic Train runs illuminated trips from 16:30, so the late afternoon is a reason to stay rather than rush.
  • Heading to Osaka? Hankyu runs from Arashiyama via Katsura, which avoids going back through Kyoto Station.

How long do you need in Arashiyama?

Half a day covers the essentials; a full day lets you add the river. Inside Kyoto times its bamboo grove, Tenryu-ji, Okochi Sanso and Kameyama Park walk at about an hour non-stop, or three to four hours with stops. That is the core.

PlanWhat it coversTime
Quick visitBamboo grove, Tenryu-ji garden, Togetsukyo Bridge2–3 hours
Half dayAdd Okochi Sanso, Kameyama Park and lunch4–5 hours
Full dayAdd the Romantic Train, Hozugawa boat and Monkey Park8–9 hours

If you only have a morning, do the quick visit from JR Saga-Arashiyama at 7:30 and you will be back in central Kyoto before the lunchtime crowds arrive.

What does a day in Arashiyama cost?

Here is the full-day plan above, priced with 2026 fares and fees for one adult.

ItemCost
JR Kyoto to Saga-Arashiyama¥240
Bamboo groveFree
Tenryu-ji garden (halls +¥300)¥500
Okochi Sanso, with matcha¥1,000
Sagano Romantic Train¥880
Hozugawa river boat¥6,000
Iwatayama Monkey Park¥550
Hankyu Arashiyama back to Kyoto-Kawaramachi¥240
Total before food¥9,410

Drop the boat and the total falls to ¥3,410. The boat is the one big spend, so decide on it first and book it.

Can you see inside Okochi Sanso’s main villa?

Not on a normal visit. The Daijokaku hall is usually closed, and you see the buildings from outside. Kyoto Prefecture occasionally runs special viewings for donors; details are on the Kyoto Prefecture page.

When is Arashiyama busiest in autumn 2026?

Autumn leaves usually peak from mid-November to early December, per the Sagano Scenic Railway. That is when Arashiyama sees its biggest crowds.

  • 7–8 November 2026: Arashiyama Momiji Festival, cancelled in rain.
  • 24 October to 29 December: Romantic Train light-up, the last with the current carriages.
  • 28–30 October: Tenryu-ji Hatto closed.
  • Weekends from mid-November: expect queues at every station. Arrive before 8:00.

For peak dates across the city, see Kyoto autumn leaves 2026.
