The 官方網站 gives the hours as 8:45–17:00 from April to October and 8:45–16:30 from November to March, with last entry 30 minutes before closing. It closes over New Year and occasionally for weather or maintenance.

Note the price rise. Since 1 April 2026, individual entry is ¥500, up from ¥440. Many guides still show the old fee. Allow about 30 minutes, more if you like old documents and storehouses.

The old town

From the Jinya, cross the Miyagawa river into the old town. This grid of dark wooden merchant houses and shops is the Takayama you have seen in photos. Walk it twice if you can: once on Saturday afternoon and again early on Sunday, before the shops open.

If you have time and energy, Hida Folk Village, an open-air museum of rural houses, is about 30 minutes’ walk or 10 minutes on the Sarubobo Bus from the station (japan-guide.com). It is a good warm-up for Shirakawa-go, but skip it if you are tired: tomorrow covers similar ground.

Hida beef: what you are actually buying

Hida beef (Hida-gyu) is a protected brand, registered as a Geographical Indication. To carry the name, the animal must be Japanese Black cattle, fattened for at least 14 months by a registered producer, with Gifu Prefecture as its longest place of rearing, and the meat must grade 3, 4 or 5 for quality and A or B for yield (Ministry of Agriculture registration).

In practice, that means Hida beef ranges from good to exceptional. In the old town it turns up as snacks at food stalls; for dinner, book a ryokan with a kaiseki meal or a yakiniku restaurant. Ask for the grade (A5 is the top) if the price seems high.

Day 2: morning market, then Shirakawa-go

Takayama morning markets

Takayama has two morning markets, both about 10 minutes’ walk from the station, open every day and finishing at 12:00 (japan-guide.com).

Market

地點

Usual hours

Winter hours

Jinya-mae

In front of Takayama Jinya

6:00–12:00

7:00–12:00 (Jan–Mar)

Miyagawa

Along the Miyagawa river

7:00–12:00

8:00–12:00 (Dec–Mar)

Go early, as the stalls pack up by noon. Book them on Japan Bus Online, or by phone on 0577-32-1688 (9:00–17:00).

The other departures are non-reserved. Oversized items can be refused, so ask first.

Children under 6 ride free on a lap. A child who takes a seat pays the child fare.

In winter, delays of two hours or more can happen because of snow, expressway closures or parking queues at Shirakawa-go. Do not book a tight onward train.

Going on to Kanazawa? That is the smartest way to end the weekend: you see both places without backtracking, and Kanazawa has the Hokuriku Shinkansen to Tokyo. From Nagoya, Gifu Bus also runs direct to Shirakawa-go in about 165 minutes (Gifu Prefecture tourism).

Should you sleep in a gassho farmhouse?

If you can get a room, yes: it is the best upgrade you can make to a Takayama and Shirakawa-go weekend. Day-trippers leave in the late afternoon, and an overnight guest sees the village quiet in the evening and early morning. It is the one thing in this plan you cannot replicate on a day trip.

Expect a simple family-run minshuku: tatami rooms, futon laid out at night, shared modern bathrooms and toilets, and dinner and breakfast of local dishes, often around an irori hearth. Prices run roughly ¥8,000 to ¥20,000 per person with two meals (japan-guide.com, October 2025).

另外， tourist association’s booking page lists Ogimachi gassho minshuku including Kanja, Gensaku, Shimizu, Yokichi and Yamamotoya. Yamamotoya only takes guests from December to March, one group a day. To use it in this plan, swap the order: Takayama on Saturday morning, an afternoon bus to Shirakawa-go, a night in the village, and the bus back or on to Kanazawa on Sunday.

Shirakawa-go winter light-up 2027: can you still go?

Possibly, but not on a whim. The 2027 light-up is on four days only: Monday 11 January (a public holiday), and Sundays 17, 24 and 31 January 2027 (Nohi Bus). The farmhouses are lit from 17:30 to 19:30.

It is a reservation-only event. Gifu’s tourism board describes it as fully pre-booked, with no turning up on the day (2024 listing). For 2027, the Shirakawa-go Tourist Association allocated village rooms by lottery, and the first round of car-park reservations had already sold out by 23 October 2026. The spring festival (Sanno Matsuri, at Hie Shrine) is on 14–15 April; the autumn festival (Hachiman Matsuri, at Sakurayama Hachimangu) is on 9–10 October (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Each parades about a dozen elaborate floats, and the float festival was added to UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2016.

Gifu Prefecture already lists the spring 2027 festival for 14–15 April 2027, with the detailed schedule still to be announced (Gifu tourism). As a guide, in 2026 the karakuri puppet shows ran at 10:00 and 14:00 on both days and the night festival, with lantern-lit floats, ran 18:00–20:30 on the 14th only. Autumn 2026 has already passed; the next autumn festival is 9–10 October 2027.

On a festival weekend, book Takayama rooms months ahead and expect the centre to be closed to cars. Takayama Jinya shuts at 16:30, the morning markets start an hour later from December or January, and the Minka-en in Shirakawa-go switches to 9:00–16:00 and closes on Thursdays from December. Plan your Shirakawa-go time for the middle of the day.

Snow usually makes Shirakawa-go most photogenic, and also slowest. Allow for bus delays, wear boots with grip, and keep a day’s buffer if you have a flight to catch.
