These are the current adult prices.

Pass

Price (adult)

Days

最適合買

JR Tokyo Wide Pass

¥16,000

3 consecutive

Day trips from Tokyo: Nikko, Karuizawa, Kawaguchiko

JR East Pass (new, from 14 Mar 2026)

¥35,000 / ¥50,000

5 / 10 consecutive

Tohoku, Nagano and Niigata from Tokyo

Hokuriku Arch Pass

¥35,000

7 consecutive

Tokyo to Kansai the long way, via Kanazawa

Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass

¥17,000

5 consecutive

Osaka, Kyoto, Himeji, Hiroshima, Miyajima

Kansai Wide Area Pass

¥12,000

5 consecutive

Kansai plus Okayama, Kinosaki and Shirahama

Kansai Area Pass

¥2,400–¥6,800

1–4 days

Kyoto, Osaka, Nara and Kobe by JR

JR Kyushu Rail Pass (All Kyushu)

¥22,000 / ¥24,000 / ¥26,000

3 / 5 / 7

Fukuoka, Nagasaki, Kumamoto, Kagoshima

Children 6–11 pay half on all of these. None covers the Tokaido Shinkansen between Tokyo and Osaka, which is exactly why they cost so much less.

The combo that beats the pass on the Golden Route + Hiroshima

Take the Nozomi to Kyoto on a single ticket (¥14,170). Start a 5-day Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass (¥17,000) for Kyoto, Osaka, Hiroshima and Miyajima. Ride the Nozomi home from Shin-Osaka (¥14,720). Total: ¥45,890, against ¥50,000 for the JR Pass, and you get Nozomi on both long legs.

One catch: the area pass excludes the Tokaido Shinkansen, so go from Kyoto to Shin-Osaka by JR Special Rapid, then board the Sanyo Shinkansen. If you land at Narita, add ¥5,200 for N’EX and the two options cost almost the same.

Going via Kanazawa: the Hokuriku Arch Pass

The Arch Pass covers Narita or Tokyo to Kanazawa, Tsuruga, Kyoto and Osaka on the Hokuriku Shinkansen and JR West lines for 7 days. JR East’s page lists it at ¥35,000. JR West’s English page still showed ¥30,000 when we checked, so confirm the price at checkout. With the current Tsuruga transfer fares, a one-way Tokyo–Kanazawa–Kyoto run on single tickets is ¥22,320, so the Arch Pass only pays if you add side trips such as Toyama or Nagano.

Day trips from Tokyo and autumn deals

For Nikko, Karuizawa or Mount Fuji, the Tokyo Wide Pass is the one to look at: see our JR Tokyo Wide Pass day trips guide. On a borderline trip, the pass buys flexibility: you can change trains, add a day trip or switch cities without buying anything new. That matters if you plan as you go or travel with kids who set the pace.

It also matters less than it used to. Single tickets can be bought on your phone or at English-language machines in a minute, and early-booking fares beat the pass on most short trips. If your singles come within ¥2,000–¥3,000 of the pass price, pick the option that suits how you travel.

How do you buy and use the JR Pass in 2026?

Buy on the official Japan Rail Pass website to get the ¥50,000 price. The price shown when you pay is the one that applies, even if prices rise before you travel.

Collect or exchange the pass in Japan with your passport, then choose a start date. The 7, 14 or 21 days run consecutively.

Reserve Hikari, Sakura and other seats for free on the JR Pass reservation site (JRP-R) or at JR stations, and book Nozomi or Mizuho add-ons at JR ticket machines or ticket offices.

Children aged 6–11 travel on a half-price child pass. A child who is 11 when you pay can still use it after turning 12.

The pass does not cover subways, private railways or buses run by non-JR companies, so you still need an IC card for most city travel.

JR Pass verdict by itinerary type

Your trip

Best buy

Tokyo only, plus one or two day trips

IC card for the city + JR Tokyo Wide Pass for day trips

Tokyo + Kyoto + Osaka, 7–10 days

Single tickets (book early on EX) + IC card

Tokyo + Kansai + Hiroshima in one week

Singles + Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass, or the JR Pass if you use N’EX

Tokyo + Kanazawa + Kansai + Hiroshima in one week

7-day JR Pass

Fly into Tokyo, out of Osaka, via Kanazawa

Single tickets, or the Hokuriku Arch Pass if you add side trips

Tohoku, Nagano or Niigata focus

JR East Pass (5 or 10 days)

Kyushu focus

JR Kyushu Rail Pass; fly or take a single Shinkansen there

Fast-moving 2-week rail tour (Hokkaido to Kyushu)

14-day JR Pass

Landing in Kansai instead?
