Gion-Shijo is the Keihan Line station under the east end of Shijo Ohashi bridge, and it is the quickest rail stop for Gion, Yasaka Shrine, Hanamikoji and Pontocho. Take Exit 7 for Yasaka Shrine, Exit 6 for Minamiza and Hanamikoji, and Exit 4 for Pontocho; Hankyu’s Kyoto-Kawaramachi station is a short walk west across the bridge.

This guide covers every practical question in the order you will hit them: which exit, which railway, how to transfer, where to put your bags, which bus (and what changed in 2024–26), Gion’s photo and alley rules, and the places worth your time within a 10-minute walk. Everything was checked against operator and city sources on 18 October 2026.

Which Gion-Shijo exit should you use?

The station has one island platform two floors down (B2), a ticket-gate concourse on B1, and nine numbered exits to the street, according to the Keihan station map (updated 1 September 2026). The exits sit along Kawabata-dori on the east bank of the Kamo River, at the Shijo-dori junction.

Below are the exits we could confirm from Keihan, JR West and venue access pages. For anything else, follow the yellow exit signs on B1 – they name the streets and landmarks.

One tip that saves time: Exit 7 has stairs. If you have a pushchair or a heavy case, use the lifts – the station has lifts, escalators and a slope between all three levels, per Keihan’s station page.

Keihan Gion-Shijo or Hankyu Kyoto-Kawaramachi: which do you need?

They are two different railways with two different stations either side of the river. They are not connected underground, so a “transfer” means walking across Shijo Ohashi at street level.

Keihan’s Premium Car seats can be bought online from 10:00, 14 days before travel, through the Premium Car Club, or on the day from cashless machines on the platforms. Hankyu’s Kyoto-Kawaramachi station guide lists 12 exits; Exit 1 (Kiyamachi) is closest to the river and the walk to Gion.

Hankyu’s regular fare from Osaka-umeda to Kyoto-Kawaramachi was ¥410, with PRiVACE at ¥500 extra, at our last check. Confirm on the ticket machine before you rely on it.

How do you change trains here?

  • To JR Kyoto Station: ride Keihan south (platform 2) to Tofukuji, then change to the JR Nara Line for one stop (about 2 minutes). JR West’s own route guide gives about 5 minutes for the Keihan leg, with trains roughly every 10 minutes.
  • To Hankyu: leave by Exit 4, cross Shijo Ohashi and go down at Hankyu Exit 1. Allow 5–8 minutes with bags.
  • To the subway: for the Tozai Line, ride Keihan one stop north to Sanjo (KH40). For the Karasuma Line, take Hankyu one stop to Karasuma, which connects to the subway’s Shijo station.
  • To Kurama and Kibune: ride Keihan to the end of the line at Demachiyanagi and change to the Eizan Railway.
  • Station help: there is a Keihan Tourist Information Center and a foreign-currency exchange machine inside. The rail information desk is unstaffed from first train to 06:10 and from 22:45 to the last train.

Where can you leave luggage near Gion-Shijo?

The station has coin lockers, parcel lockers and multi-function lockers, but no staffed left-luggage counter, according to Keihan. Large lockers go first on weekends and in the autumn-leaf peak, so do not count on one after mid-morning.

Kyoto City asks visitors not to bring large suitcases onto city buses, because they block residents from boarding. It is a request, not a fine, but drivers and other passengers will expect it. The city’s Hands Free Kyoto site lists booking services (ecbo cloak, Radical Storage and Bounce) and these drop-off counters at Kyoto Station:

For a price guide: the city’s temporary spring 2026 counter charged ¥1,400 (booked) or ¥1,500 (walk-in) for same-day delivery to a hotel in Kyoto, and ¥800–1,000 for storage, per Hands Free Kyoto. Send the bag from the station, then ride to Gion light.

Which buses serve Gion, and what changed in 2024–26?

The Gion bus stop (for Yasaka Shrine) is at the top of Shijo-dori, and the Shijo Keihan-mae stop is outside the station. Buses are slow in peak season; the train is usually faster from Kyoto Station.

Bus-only one-day passDiscontinuedSales ended September 2023; not accepted after March 2024

The EX100 and EX101 sightseeing express buses launched on 1 June 2024 with Kyoto’s biggest bus timetable revision in a decade. Only EX100 stops at Gion; EX101 runs Kyoto Station to Gojo-zaka (for Kiyomizu-dera) only. Commuter passes and coupon tickets are not valid, per the Kyoto City Transportation Bureau.

The 1-day pass is a magnetic card sold at subway stations, bus and subway information centres, some convenience stores and hotels, and on buses (where it can sell out), per the official pass page. At ¥230 a ride, it pays off from your fifth trip.

Coming next: Kyoto plans a “resident-priority” bus fare within fiscal 2027 (April 2027 to March 2028). Residents would pay ¥200 and everyone else about ¥350–400 per ride, subject to national approval; how day passes will be treated is undecided, per the city’s March 2026 plan.

What is there to see within a 10-minute walk?

Yasaka Shrine

The shrine at the top of Shijo-dori, and the home of the Gion Matsuri every July. Free to enter; the shrine office is open 9:00–17:00. Address: 625 Gionmachi Kitagawa, Higashiyama-ku. About 5 minutes from the station, per the shrine. The lanterns on the main stage look best after dark.

Hanamikoji

Gion’s best-known street, lined with wooden teahouses and restaurants from Shijo-dori down to Kennin-ji. It is a public road, so walking and photos are allowed – but the side alleys off it are not (see the rules below).

Shirakawa and Tatsumi Bridge

A willow-lined canal north of Shijo-dori, usually quieter than Hanamikoji and better for photos. Free. Go early morning or after 18:00 when the day crowds thin.

Kennin-ji Temple

The big Zen temple at the bottom of Hanamikoji, and the calmest place in Gion on a busy afternoon. Open 10:00–17:00 (last entry 16:30). Adults ¥800, rising to ¥1,000 from 1 January 2027; students ¥500, per the temple. Address: 584 Komatsu-cho, Higashiyama-ku; about 7 minutes from the station.

Minamiza

Kyoto’s kabuki theatre, right outside Exit 6. Even without a ticket, its façade on the Kamo River side of Shijo-dori is the landmark to meet friends.

What can you do and shop within a 10-minute walk?

  • Gion Corner – a 50-minute sampler of tea ceremony, ikebana, bunraku, kyogen and maiko dance. Daily at 18:00 and 19:00, ¥5,500. From 1 December to 11 March it runs Tuesday to Friday only. Closed 16 July, 16 August, 26 December–4 January, 11 and 23 February. 570-2 Gionmachi Minamigawa. Source: Gion Corner.
  • Nishiki Market – about 390 m and 130-plus food shops, one block north of Shijo-dori. Most shops open around 10:00–18:00 and many close on Wednesdays or Sundays. The market asks you to eat at the stall where you bought the food, not while walking (Nishiki Market).
  • Shinkyogoku and Teramachi arcades – covered shopping streets for souvenirs, snacks and drugstores. Use Hankyu Exit 8 (near Shinkyogoku) or Exit 11 (Teramachi).
  • Takashimaya Kyoto – the department store on the Shijo-Kawaramachi corner, with Hankyu Exits 4 and 5 opening straight into it. Good for a rainy hour and the basement food hall.
  • Pontocho stroll – a narrow, roughly 490 m lane between the Kamo River and Kiyamachi, best after dark.

Where to drink nearby

Pontocho is the obvious first stop: about 490 m of tiny bars and restaurants, one minute from Exit 4. In the warmer months, restaurants on the river side open kawadoko (riverside dining platforms); plan on ¥8,000 or more per person for dinner on one. Do not stop to take long photos in the lane – it is barely two people wide.

L’Escamoteur (138-9 Saitocho, Shimogyo-ku, by the Takase River just south of Shijo) is the city’s best-known theatrical cocktail bar, built around magic and alchemy. Evenings only, Tuesday to Sunday. Book ahead if you can; it is small.

For a cheaper drink, the side streets of Kiyamachi between Shijo and Sanjo are full of standing bars and izakayas. Most charge a table fee (otoshi) of a few hundred yen, which is normal, not a scam.

What are Gion’s photography and private-alley rules in 2026?

Gion’s rules are set by local residents’ and shop owners’ councils, not national law, but Kyoto City backs them with its own notices. Here is what applies as of October 2026:

  • Private alleys: since April 2024, signs in Japanese and English bar visitors from several blocks of private alleys in Gion Minamigawa (south of Shijo-dori, around Hanamikoji). The posted fine is ¥10,000.
  • Photography on private streets: signs warning of a ¥10,000 fine for photos on Gion’s private roads have been up since October 2019.
  • Public streets are open: Hanamikoji itself, Shijo-dori and Shirakawa are public roads, where walking and photos are allowed.
  • Geiko and maiko: do not stop, follow, touch or block them, and never photograph them without permission. They are usually working, on the way to an appointment.
  • Drones: central Kyoto is a Densely Inhabited District, so drones of 100 g or more need registration and a permit, and city parks ban them by ordinance.

If you see a sign with a red no-entry or no-camera symbol, that alley is private. Turn around – the main streets have the same wooden façades anyway.

When is Gion-Shijo least crowded?

  • Before 9:00: Hanamikoji, Shirakawa and Yasaka Shrine are close to empty, and shops are still shut, which is good for photos.
  • Weekday afternoons are calmer than weekends and holidays, which is also when the extra EX100 sightseeing buses run.
  • Avoid the evening of the main Gion Matsuri processions in July and the November autumn-leaf weekends, when Shijo-dori is shoulder to shoulder. See our Kyoto autumn leaves 2026 guide for peak dates.
  • 18:00–19:00 is when geiko and maiko head to appointments – busy on Hanamikoji, so give them room.

Gion-Shijo FAQ

Which exit at Gion-Shijo is closest to Yasaka Shrine?

Exit 7. Walk east along Shijo-dori; the shrine’s west gate is about 5 minutes away.

Is Gion-Shijo the same station as Kawaramachi?

No. It is the Keihan Line station on the east bank of the Kamo River. Kyoto-Kawaramachi is the Hankyu terminus on the west bank. They are a few minutes apart on foot across Shijo Ohashi, with no underground connection.

How do I get from Kyoto Station to Gion-Shijo by train?

Take the JR Nara Line one stop to Tofukuji (about 2 minutes), then the Keihan Line north (about 5 minutes). Both legs accept IC cards such as ICOCA.

Can I still buy the Kyoto one-day bus pass?

No. The ¥700 bus-only pass stopped selling in September 2023 and was not accepted after March 2024. The Subway & Bus 1-Day Pass costs ¥1,100 for adults and is valid until the end of the day you first use it.

Does the sightseeing express bus stop at Gion?

EX100 does: it runs Kyoto Station – Gojo-zaka – Gion – Okazaki – Ginkakuji for ¥500, mainly on weekends and holidays. EX101 only goes to Gojo-zaka.

Are there coin lockers at the station?

Yes, along with parcel and multi-function lockers, but there is no staffed left-luggage counter. Large lockers fill early, so for big suitcases use a delivery service at Kyoto Station.

Is photography banned in Gion?

Not on public streets such as Hanamikoji, Shijo-dori and Shirakawa. It is banned on private roads and alleys, where signs warn of a ¥10,000 fine, and you should never photograph geiko or maiko without permission.
