The easiest ski day trip from Tokyo is GALA Yuzawa: about 71 minutes by shinkansen from Tokyo Station, and the gondola starts inside the station building. For the 2026–27 season, GALA’s slopes open on Saturday 19 December 2026. If you want snow sooner, Snow Town Yeti near Mt Fuji opens on Friday 23 October 2026 and Karuizawa Prince Snow Resort on Saturday 31 October 2026.

This guide covers nine ski areas you can reach from Tokyo by shinkansen or bus. Seven work as day trips, and Hakuba and Nozawa Onsen are best as overnight trips. For each one we list the 2026–27 dates, travel time and fare, a 1-day lift price, rental and who it suits. Then come rail passes, buses, gear, onsen and a comparison table. We checked dates and prices against each resort’s official site, and we say where 2026–27 figures aren’t published yet.

Can you really ski on a day trip from Tokyo?

Yes. The Joetsu Shinkansen reaches Echigo-Yuzawa in as little as 66 minutes, and the Hokuriku Shinkansen reaches Karuizawa in 60–72 minutes. Leave Tokyo at 7am and you can be on the slopes by 9am and back in Tokyo for dinner. Regular unreserved fares are ¥6,370 each way to Echigo-Yuzawa and ¥5,600 each way to Karuizawa (fares checked 17 October 2026).

Japan has rarely been more popular with visitors: it was voted Favourite Country for a Holiday for the second year running (JNTO, 9 October 2026). Expect busy trains on Saturdays, the New Year holiday, the 9–11 January long weekend and the 20–22 March equinox weekend. If you can, ski on a weekday.

What are the best ski resorts near Tokyo for 2026–27?

We label dates as Confirmed when the resort has published them for 2026–27. Dates marked Expected use last season’s dates as a guide, and TBA means nothing has been published yet. Lift prices are adult, bought on the day, unless we say otherwise.

1. GALA Yuzawa (Station-direct resort, Niigata)

The Lowdown: GALA has its own seasonal shinkansen station. You leave the ticket gates, rent your gear and ride the gondola up, all in the same building. Slopes open 19 December 2026 to 5 May 2027 (Confirmed). From 12 to 18 December, only the gondola runs, for sightseeing and snow play, with no skiing regardless of how much snow there is.

Where: GALA Yuzawa Station (Joetsu Shinkansen), Yuzawa, Niigata. Fastest 71 minutes from Tokyo Station. Not every train runs through to GALA. On other trains, get off at Echigo-Yuzawa and take the free shuttle bus (about 10 minutes).
The Vibe: Busy, easy and beginner-friendly. It’s the most foolproof first ski day in Japan.
Price: Gondola & lift 1-day ticket ¥8,000 (¥7,500 online), elementary-school children ¥4,000. The early-bird ticket is ¥4,800, on sale until 30 November 2026 at 23:00. Rail fare is from ¥6,370 each way to Echigo-Yuzawa.
Official Link: GALA Yuzawa hours and lift prices

💡 Japan Pro Tip: For 2026–27, GALA has closed its South Area: four courses, the Wagonette pair lift and the Landoo aerial tram that linked GALA to Yuzawa Kogen. You can still reach Yuzawa Kogen by shuttle bus, but you can no longer ski across. The Central and North areas stay open. Buy the ¥4,800 early-bird ticket before 30 November. Only Yeti’s weekday ticket is cheaper in this guide.

2. Karuizawa Prince Snow Resort (Earliest shinkansen ski, Nagano)

The Lowdown: This is the closest real ski resort to Tokyo by train. It opens its East area on 31 October 2026 on man-made snow, and the season runs to 31 March 2027 (Confirmed). The West area is planned for 19 December 2026 to 22 March 2027. The slopes sit next to the Karuizawa Prince Shopping Plaza outlet mall.

Where: 10 minutes’ walk, or a free shuttle, from Karuizawa Station South Exit. The Hokuriku Shinkansen takes 60–72 minutes from Tokyo, ¥5,600 each way unreserved.
The Vibe: Gentle, groomed runs, a ski-and-shop day, and families.
Price: 1-day ¥8,000 early season (31 Oct–18 Dec), ¥10,000 main season (19 Dec–22 Mar), ¥12,000–¥13,000 on peak dates (for example 29 Dec–3 Jan), ¥8,000 in spring. Booking online saves money. Elementary-school children ski free with a ticket bought on site. Ski or board set ¥7,500, wear set ¥5,500.
Official Link: Karuizawa Prince Snow Resort

💡 Japan Pro Tip: Go in November. Lift tickets are ¥2,000 cheaper than in the main season, the slopes are quiet, and the outlet mall’s winter sales follow later. The resort doesn’t rent gloves, goggles or beanies, so bring your own.

3. Kagura (Long-season powder, Niigata)

The Lowdown: Kagura is the snow-sure choice in the Yuzawa area and has one of the longest seasons near Tokyo. The Kagura and Mitsumata areas run 28 November 2026 to 16 May 2027, and Tashiro runs 19 December 2026 to 5 May 2027 (Confirmed). The upper slopes are popular with powder skiers and riders.

Where: Mitsumata base, Yuzawa, Niigata. A local route bus runs from Echigo-Yuzawa Station East Exit. The 2026–27 timetable hadn’t been published when we checked.
The Vibe: Intermediate and advanced skiers, deep snow, and spring skiing into May.
Price: 1-day ¥8,500. The Mt Naeba ticket (Kagura plus Naeba) is ¥11,800. Children up to elementary-school age ski free with a special ticket from the ticket window. All-in rental (gear plus wear) was ¥10,000 last season.
Official Link: Kagura lift tickets

💡 Japan Pro Tip: Check the bus back to Echigo-Yuzawa before you set off. The last buses fill up fast on powder days, and a taxi is the only backup.

4. Naeba (Big resort with night skiing, Niigata)

The Lowdown: Naeba is a large resort built around the Naeba Prince Hotel, with night skiing and the Dragondola gondola across to Kagura. The season runs 18 December 2026 to 4 April 2027 (Confirmed). Night skiing runs to 21 March and the Dragondola from 26 December to 22 March (both planned).

Where: Yuzawa, Niigata, in the mountains above Echigo-Yuzawa. There’s a free shuttle from Echigo-Yuzawa for hotel guests only. Winter express and route bus times hadn’t been announced yet, and a taxi costs about ¥11,000. A seasonal “Naeba White Snow Shuttle” runs from Sunshine City Prince Hotel in Ikebukuro between 19 December 2026 and 22 March 2027 (times TBA).
The Vibe: A full resort with hotel, restaurants and night lights. It’s better as a one-night stay than a rushed day.
Price: Naeba-area 1-day ¥9,800, Mt Naeba (with Kagura) ¥11,800. Children up to elementary-school age ski free. A ski or board set costs ¥7,500 a day at the day-visitor rental shops (¥6,500 from the second day).
Official Link: Naeba lift tickets

💡 Japan Pro Tip: The Ikebukuro shuttle is the simplest door-to-snow option for Naeba. When the timetable comes out, check that the return leaves late enough for a full ski day.

5. Snow Town Yeti and Fujiten (Ski on Mt Fuji, Shizuoka and Yamanashi)

The Lowdown: Snow Town Yeti, on Mt Fuji’s southern side, opens on 23 October 2026 (Confirmed). That makes it Japan’s earliest-opening ski area for the 28th year running, and it stays open to 28 March 2027, from 9:00 to 22:00. Fujiten, on the northern side near Lake Kawaguchiko, plans to open in mid-December 2026 and close in early April 2027 (Confirmed; exact opening day TBA).

Where: Yeti is in Susono, Shizuoka. Its liner bus from Shinjuku takes about 2 hours 30 minutes, and the fare includes your lift ticket. Fujikyu route buses also run from JR Gotemba (¥1,570 one way last season) and Mishima (¥1,830). Fujiten is in Narusawa, Yamanashi. Take the highway bus from Busta Shinjuku to Kawaguchiko (about 1 hour 45 minutes, ¥2,200), then the resort shuttle (¥4,000 return last season).
The Vibe: Yeti is for first-timers, practice and night skiing. Fujiten adds views of Mt Fuji from the slopes.
Price: Yeti 1-day ¥4,300 on weekdays and ¥5,300 at weekends. Fujiten 2026–27 1-day ¥5,800 on weekdays, ¥6,800 at weekends and holidays, ¥7,300 on peak dates. Rental sets cost ¥5,800 at Yeti and ¥5,500 at Fujiten (last season’s prices).
Official Link: Snow Town Yeti · Fujiten lift prices

💡 Japan Pro Tip: These are the cheapest lift days near Tokyo, but the snow is mostly man-made and the terrain is short. Go to Yeti if you want to learn before Christmas, and combine Fujiten with a Kawaguchiko stay so you can see the Fuji views at sunrise.

6. Minakami: Tanigawadake “Mt.T” (Powder and backcountry, Gunma)

The Lowdown: Tanigawadake Tenjindaira, now branded “Mt.T”, is a ropeway-access powder field. The pistes are 15–38° and the backcountry runs reach 30–50°. The season runs 19 December 2026 to 4 April 2027 (Confirmed). This is the place for strong skiers chasing #japow without staying overnight.

Where: Tanigawadake Ropeway base, Minakami, Gunma. The resort says the trip from Tokyo takes as little as 2 hours by shinkansen and bus. That means the Joetsu Shinkansen to Jomo-Kogen (62–77 minutes, ¥5,600 each way), then a local bus to the ropeway base.
The Vibe: Steep, deep and serious. It’s not for beginners.
Price: 1Day Pass ¥9,000 (19 Dec–8 Jan and 1–9 Mar). From 9 January to 28 February there’s only the “Ultimate 1Day Pass” at ¥14,000, capped at 150 people a day and sold in advance only. The Spring Pass is ¥6,000 (10 Mar–4 Apr) and the elementary-school pass ¥2,000. Ski or board sets rent for ¥5,000. Gloves, goggles, hats and helmets are not available to rent.
Official Link: Mt.T 2026–27 season and tickets

💡 Japan Pro Tip: Book your January and February dates as soon as sales open, because with only 150 passes a day, powder days sell out. Off-piste terrain needs avalanche gear and knowledge, so hire a certified guide rather than following tracks.

7. Kawaba and Marunuma Kogen (Bus-tour favourites, Gunma)

The Lowdown: These are two high, cold resorts in northern Gunma, known for dry snow and popular with Tokyo bus tours. Kawaba is adding a 1,500 m terrain park designed by pro snowboarder Reira Iwabuchi and a larger Freeride World Tour-certified off-piste zone for 2026–27. Kawaba’s dates are TBA. Marunuma ran 5 December 2025 to 6 May 2026 last season, so expect early December to early May (Expected).

Where: Kawaba Village and Katashina, Gunma, about 2–2.5 hours by car from Nerima IC. For Kawaba, take a morning ski bus tour from Tokyo stations (Orion Tour, Travel Road, bigs), which arrives around 10am to noon. For Marunuma, take the Katashina Snow Express from Busta Shinjuku at 7:35. Last season it cost ¥4,500 one way or ¥8,000 return, and the free shuttle to the slopes must be reserved.
The Vibe: Locals’ weekend resorts with good parks and tree runs.
Price: Kawaba 1-day ¥7,600 on weekdays and ¥7,900 at weekends (¥8,400 on peak dates). The early-bird ticket is ¥5,800 until 30 November at 17:00. Marunuma’s early-bird ticket is ¥5,000 until 30 November, against ¥7,000 on peak days. Last season, sets rented for ¥6,000 at Kawaba and ¥5,500 at Marunuma.
Official Link: Kawaba lift prices · Marunuma access and Snow Express

💡 Japan Pro Tip: On last season’s Marunuma Snow Express timetable, the shuttle reached the slopes at 11:45 and left at 15:20. That’s barely 3.5 hours of skiing. Spend a night in Katashina, or take a private transfer for a full day.

8. Hakuba Happo-one (Best as an overnight, Nagano)

Skier on a groomed slope in Hakuba, Nagano, an overnight ski trip from Tokyo
Hakuba is about 2 hours 50 minutes from Tokyo by shinkansen and express bus, so stay overnight. Photo: Colin Blenis / Unsplash

The Lowdown: Hakuba is Japan’s Alps resort, with Olympic terrain and a big international village. It’s possible as a day trip, but not worth the travel time for one day. Happo-one’s 2026–27 tickets run in three periods: Season-In 1–18 December 2026, High Season 19 December 2026 to 22 March 2027, and Spring 23 March to 5 May 2027.

Where: Hakuba, Nagano. The fastest route from Tokyo takes about 2 hours 50 minutes: the Hokuriku Shinkansen to Nagano, then the Alpico express bus. Direct highway buses also run from Busta Shinjuku.
The Vibe: Big mountains, an international, English-friendly village and après-ski.
Price: 1-day ¥9,800 in High Season (children 6–17 ¥4,900) and ¥6,400 in Season-In and Spring.
Official Link: Happo-one lift tickets · Hakuba Valley access

💡 Japan Pro Tip: Happo-one is building a new gondola from its Nakiyama base, due to open in December 2027. Stay at least two nights and plan Christmas and New Year early, because Hakuba lodging fills months ahead.

9. Nozawa Onsen (Powder and onsen village, Nagano)

Snowy village street in Nozawa Onsen, Nagano, a powder and onsen ski trip from Tokyo
Nozawa Onsen’s 1-day lift and gondola ticket costs ¥7,800 for 2026–27. Photo: Matt Ketchum / Unsplash

The Lowdown: Nozawa Onsen is a favourite ski village on Instagram’s #japow and #skijapan feeds, for its powder runs and its old onsen streets. Early-season skiing runs 28 November to 18 December 2026, the opening festival is on 19 December, and the 2026–27 lift-price season runs to 28 March 2027 (Confirmed). Last season, spring operation continued to 6 May.

Where: Nozawa Onsen, Nagano. Take the Hokuriku Shinkansen to Iiyama, then the Nozawa Onsen Liner bus (about 25 minutes; buy tickets at the machine by the bus stop).
The Vibe: A traditional village with 44 courses (about 40% for beginners), deep snow and 13 free public baths.
Price: 1-day lift and gondola ¥7,800, children ¥4,700. At Salomon Station (Nagasaka base), a full set (ski or board, boots, jacket and pants) is ¥9,500 a day.
Official Link: Nozawa Onsen lift prices · Train and bus access

💡 Japan Pro Tip: Stay two nights so you get one powder morning without a train to catch. Check the shinkansen-to-bus connection before booking, because the resort warns some trains don’t connect.

Is the JR Tokyo Wide Pass worth it for skiing?

Only if you ride more than once in three days. The JR Tokyo Wide Pass costs ¥16,000 for three consecutive days. It covers the shinkansen to Echigo-Yuzawa and GALA Yuzawa, Jomo-Kogen and Karuizawa, plus Fujikyu trains to Kawaguchiko. It’s sold to anyone with a non-Japanese passport, including foreign residents. One ski day to Echigo-Yuzawa costs ¥12,740 return at regular fares, so the pass pays off once you add a second trip within the three days. That could be a second ski day, or Nikko or Kawaguchiko. Pass holders also get discounts on lift tickets, rental and onsen entry at GALA Yuzawa.

The pass does not reach Nagano or Iiyama, so Hakuba and Nozawa Onsen need regular tickets. We could not find a current JR East product officially called a “Ski Day Pass”. GALA says shinkansen-plus-lift packs are sold through travel agencies, so ask where you buy your train ticket.

Which ski buses run from Tokyo?

  • Snow Town Yeti liner: from Shinjuku (about 2 hrs 30 min) and several Yokohama-area stops. The fare includes a 1-day lift ticket. Last season, the Shinjuku service started on 1 November. Yeti liner bus
  • Katashina Snow Express (Marunuma): last season it left Busta Shinjuku at 7:35, returned from Oze Katashina at 16:00 and cost ¥8,000 return; 2026–27 times are not yet published. Marunuma access
  • Naeba White Snow Shuttle: runs from Sunshine City Prince Hotel, Ikebukuro, 19 December 2026 to 22 March 2027 (times TBA). Naeba access
  • Kawaba ski tours: morning departures from major Tokyo stations with Orion Tour, Travel Road and bigs, usually with the lift ticket included. Kawaba access
  • Free station shuttles: Echigo-Yuzawa to GALA (about 10 minutes) and Karuizawa Station South Exit to Karuizawa Prince (no reservation needed).

Should you rent ski gear in Tokyo or at the resort?

Rows of rental skis on a rack in a ski shop, ready for a ski day trip from Tokyo
A rental ski or board set costs ¥5,000–¥7,500 a day at resorts near Tokyo. Photo: Mavera zehra Çoşkun / Pexels

For a day trip, rent at the resort. Every resort in this guide rents skis, snowboards and boots to day visitors. A ski or board set costs ¥5,000–¥7,500, and adding a jacket and pants takes the total to about ¥9,500–¥13,000. Carrying gear on a packed shinkansen is hard work, and lockers at the base are cheaper than a taxi. Most resorts let you reserve rental online a few days ahead, and that’s worth doing for New Year and the 9–11 January long weekend.

The catch is small items. Karuizawa Prince, Kagura, Naeba, Marunuma and Mt.T do not rent gloves, goggles or hats. Buy them in Tokyo before you go. Kanda-Ogawamachi, near Ochanomizu, is lined with ski shops, including a large Murasaki Sports.

What should you bring on a ski day trip from Tokyo?

  • Your passport, if you’re using the JR Tokyo Wide Pass or buying one at the station.
  • Gloves, goggles, a beanie or helmet, and thermal base layers.
  • Warm, waterproof shoes for the walk from the station. Trainers soak through fast in Niigata slush.
  • Cash for buses and small lodges. Nozawa Onsen Liner tickets are sold from a machine at the Iiyama bus stop.
  • A small towel and a change of clothes for an onsen before the train home.
  • Your return train reservation. Evening shinkansen from Echigo-Yuzawa often sell out on Sundays.

Where can you soak in an onsen after skiing?

Steaming outdoor hot spring in Nozawa Onsen village, onsen after skiing
Nozawa Onsen has 13 public soto-yu baths, free with a small donation. Photo: waa towaw / Unsplash

Nozawa Onsen is the classic: 13 soto-yu public baths you can walk between, free to use, with a small donation to the villagers who look after them. The landmark O-yu bath is open 6:00–23:00 from December to March. Wash before you get in, keep your towel out of the water, and expect the water to be very hot. At GALA Yuzawa, there’s a hot spring in the station building, so you can soak before the train home. Minakami, next to Tanigawadake, is an onsen town in its own right. For the bigger onsen trips, see our guide to the best onsen towns in Japan, and for the rest of the season, winter in Japan 2026–27.

3 things most ski guides miss for 2026–27

  • GALA’s South Area is closed this season. The Landoo tram to Yuzawa Kogen isn’t running, so older “ski three resorts on one link” itineraries no longer work. Use the shuttle bus between GALA and Yuzawa Kogen instead. (GALA news, 15 September 2026)
  • 30 November is the early-bird deadline. GALA’s online early-bird ticket is ¥4,800 (against ¥8,000 at the counter), Kawaba’s is ¥5,800 (against ¥7,600 or more) and Marunuma’s is ¥5,000 (against ¥7,000). At GALA, a group of four saves ¥12,800 on a single day against counter prices.
  • Kids ski free at the Prince resorts. At Karuizawa, Naeba and Kagura, children up to elementary-school age ride the lifts free. You need to collect a free ticket at the window, and at Karuizawa buying online adds a ¥100 fee. With young children, that makes these resorts among the cheapest family days near Tokyo.

Ski day trip from Tokyo: FAQ

What is the easiest ski day trip from Tokyo?

GALA Yuzawa. It is about 71 minutes from Tokyo Station by Joetsu Shinkansen, the gondola starts in the station building, and rental is on site. Slopes open 19 December 2026 to 5 May 2027.

When does Gala Yuzawa open in 2026?

GALA Yuzawa opens for skiing and snowboarding on Saturday 19 December 2026 and runs to Wednesday 5 May 2027. From 12 to 18 December only the gondola runs, for sightseeing, with no skiing.

Which ski resort near Tokyo opens first?

Snow Town Yeti near Mt Fuji opens on Friday 23 October 2026, the earliest in Japan for the 28th year. Karuizawa Prince Snow Resort follows on Saturday 31 October 2026 and is reachable by shinkansen.

How much does a ski day trip from Tokyo cost?

Budget about ¥27,000–¥33,000 per adult for GALA Yuzawa: ¥12,740 return shinkansen to Echigo-Yuzawa, ¥7,500–¥8,000 for a lift ticket, and about ¥7,000–¥12,000 for gear and wear rental. Early-bird tickets and the JR Tokyo Wide Pass cut this.

It is possible but not recommended. Hakuba is about 2 hours 50 minutes each way and Nozawa Onsen needs the shinkansen to Iiyama plus a bus. Stay at least one night, ideally two.

No. All resorts in this guide rent skis, snowboards and boots, and most rent jackets and pants. Bring or buy gloves, goggles and a hat, because several resorts do not rent them.
