Shuri Castle Reopening 2026: Tickets, Timed Entry & Festival
The Shuri Castle reopening 2026 date is Monday 23 November 2026: the rebuilt Seiden (main hall), lost in the October 2019 fire, opens to the public at 12:00 that day, and you need a timed reservation to go inside. From the same day, the adult ticket for the paid area rises from ¥400 to ¥1,000, and the Seiden slot is included at no extra cost.
The park closes completely on Sunday 22 November for the completion ceremony. Before that, Naha throws its annual Shuri Castle Restoration Festival on 1–3 November, with a royal procession down Kokusai-dori. Below: prices, how to book your slot, what was rebuilt, and a day plan from the airport to an awamori nightcap. This is the stuff the two-paragraph news pieces leave out.

When does Shuri Castle’s Seiden reopen?
Monday 23 November 2026 (a national holiday). The Cabinet Office’s Okinawa General Bureau holds the completion ceremony on Sunday 22 November, and the whole park, free areas included, is closed that day. On the 23rd, Okinawa Prefecture holds an opening ceremony in the morning. The free area reopens at 11:15. The paid area and the Seiden open at 12:00.
The park warns it will be busy that day, and says it will post entry details later. If you’re not wedded to the date, go any day after 29 November, when the shuttle buses stop and the first wave has passed.
Shuri Castle tickets 2026: old vs new prices
From 23 November, one ticket covers the whole paid area, with or without a Seiden slot. Prices include tax. Tickets for visits up to 21 November aren’t sold online, so buy those at the Kofukumon window on the day.
| Ticket | Until 21 Nov 2026 | From 23 Nov 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Adult | ¥400 | ¥1,000 |
| High school student | ¥300 | ¥760 |
| Elementary / junior high | ¥160 | ¥370 |
| Under 6 | ฟรี | ฟรี |
| Group adult (20+) | ¥320 | ¥800 |
| Group high school (20+) | ¥240 | ¥610 |
| Group elementary / junior high (20+) | ¥120 | ¥300 |
| Annual pass, adult (general / Okinawa resident) | — | ¥2,000 / ¥1,500 |
The park says the rise pays for fire prevention and higher running costs. Two and a half times the price sounds steep, but ¥1,000 is still less than most Tokyo museum tickets. For the bigger picture, see our Japan travel cost guide.
How to book a Shuri Castle Seiden time slot
Here’s how the timed entry works, from the official ticket guide and the operator’s August 2026 press release.
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Do I need a slot? | Only to go inside the Seiden. The rest of the paid area needs a normal ticket, no booking. |
| Extra cost? | None. Buy the ticket type that includes a Seiden slot (入場券・正殿内観覧予約あり). |
| Slot length | 30 minutes |
| Where to book | Online via the official ticket page (links to the Webket booking system). You need to register a Webket account to buy. It takes Visa, Mastercard, JCB, Amex, PayPay, Alipay and UnionPay. |
| How many per order? | Up to 9 tickets per payment |
| Changes and refunds | You can change the date and time up to the day before your visit. You can cancel up to two days before, but cancellation applies to the whole order. |
| Visits 23 Nov – 31 Dec 2026 | Released 1 September and 1 October (13:00). Both batches are out, so book now. |
| Visits from 1 Jan 2027 | On sale at 13:00 on the 1st of the month, two months before. By that rule, January slots go on sale 1 November 2026. |
| Same-day | If slots are left: online until 15 minutes before the slot, or at the Kofukumon ticket window. Web tickets can take 5–10 minutes to activate, so don’t buy one at the gate. |
| Free visitors (annual pass, Okinawa residents 70+) | Still need a slot. Preschool children don’t. |
| Groups | Lottery via a group form. No group Seiden bookings 23 Nov – 6 Dec 2026. |
Is it sold out? No. When we checked the official booking calendar on 25 October, opening day (23 November) was marked “only a few left”, and every other date shown, up to 12 December, still had space. Ryukyu Shimpo reported that about 25% of slots up to 31 December had been booked by the end of September. That will change fast once the reopening hits the news, so book this week.
Best slots: On opening day, a slot after 14:00 lets the crowd at the 12:00 opening clear first. On normal days, take the first slot of the morning, then walk down to Kinjo-cho before the tour groups arrive. Late-afternoon slots work too, and the red walls look better in low light.
The booking system is Japanese-first. If you get stuck, that’s exactly the kind of form we deal with every day (see the end of this guide).
What was rebuilt at Shuri Castle? From the 2019 fire to 2026
- 31 October 2019: fire breaks out in the Seiden in the early hours. The main hall and the halls around it burn down.
- March 2020: the national government sets a timeline aiming for a 2026 Seiden, with sprinklers and modern fire detection the old hall lacked.
- 3 November 2022: construction ceremony. The total project is about ¥12 billion, with the Seiden itself put at about ¥5.6 billion.
- 27 December 2025 – 4 January 2026: a special viewing lets visitors see the newly lacquered front of the Seiden from the courtyard.
- 24 July 2026: the two great dragon pillars (dai-ryūchū) and the corridors either side are shown to the press. This time the dragons stand facing each other, not facing out as before.
- 22–23 November 2026: completion ceremony, then public opening.
What you’re actually looking at: a three-storey wooden hall, freshly lacquered in Ryukyu red. The hall that burned in 2019 was itself a 1992 reconstruction, because the earlier one was destroyed in the Battle of Okinawa in 1945. The North and South Halls are being rebuilt in stages, so expect some fencing and cranes for a while yet.
Is it a World Heritage Site? The castle site is, as part of the UNESCO-listed Gusuku Sites and Related Properties of the Kingdom of Ryukyu. The listing covers the original remains, not the rebuilt hall. Tamaudun and the Sonohyan-utaki stone gate, both on the route below, are part of the same listing.
A 90-minute Shuri Castle route
- Shureimon gate (free, 0:00). The famous gate on the ¥2,000 note. Get your photo here first.
- Sonohyan-utaki stone gate (free, 0:05). A small World Heritage shrine gate just past Shureimon. Most people walk straight past it.
- Up through the free gates (0:10–0:25). Kankaimon, then the climb to Kofukumon, where the ticket window is. Look back for views over Naha.
- Hoshinmon into the courtyard (0:25). This is where your paid ticket starts. The striped courtyard opens straight onto the Seiden.
- Inside the Seiden (0:30–1:00). Be at the entrance for the start of your slot. Shoes come off inside (bring a plastic bag to carry them), and there’s no re-entry. Look at the dragon pillars, the carved gable and the throne hall.
- Out and down (1:00–1:30). Walk out past the restoration works and down to Ryutan pond, the best place to see the castle walls from below.
Times are our suggestion, not an official route. The park has not published how long you can stay inside the Seiden.
Shuri Castle Restoration Festival 2026 (1–3 November)
The annual Shuri Castle Restoration Festival (首里城復興祭) runs Sunday 1 to Tuesday 3 November 2026. It’s organised by the Shuri Castle Festival committee and run from the park management centre. This year’s programme moves things around compared with 2025, so ignore older listings.
- Sunday 1 November: Ryukyu Dynasty Picture Scroll Procession on Kokusai-dori. The king and queen, Chinese envoys, eisa drummers and banner teams. About 700 people are expected to take part. Free to watch from the pavement. In 2025 it ran 12:30–14:30, with the road closed 12:00–15:00. The 2026 time is TBA.
- Monday 2 November: the King and Queen appear at Hoshinmon gate in the castle. Both roles are filled by public audition.
- Tuesday 3 November: the Ancient Procession leaves Hoshinmon in the early afternoon and winds through the streets around the castle.
- Also planned: a restoration prayer stage. In 2025 there were also restoration tours, a VR experience and an awamori event, but the 2026 extras haven’t been published yet.
The Seiden won’t be open inside during the festival. That comes three weeks later. Still, a procession with the new hall behind it is the photo of the year. For more events, see our Japanese festival calendar และ Tokyo events in November 2026.
Okinawa in November: weather and what to pack
The Japan Meteorological Agency’s 1991–2020 normals for Naha in November: 25.0°C average high, 20.4°C average low, 119.1 mm of rain over the month. So it’s T-shirt weather by day, with a light layer for evenings. The castle sits on a hill with little shade, so bring water and a hat. Typhoons are less common by November but not impossible. If a storm warning is issued, outdoor sites close (Tamaudun, for one, shuts during typhoon warnings), so keep a spare day.
A Naha day plan around your Seiden slot

This plan assumes a morning slot. If you land at Naha Airport, the Yui Rail monorail runs right through it.
Getting around: Naha Airport to Shuri takes 27 minutes and costs ¥360 (child ¥180). Kencho-mae, for Kokusai-dori, is 13 minutes and ¥290. A 1-day pass costs ¥1,000 and a 2-day pass costs ¥1,800, each valid for 24 or 48 hours from when you buy it. Yui Rail takes Suica, PASMO, ICOCA and the other national IC cards for single rides. You can top up with cash, but you can’t use an IC card to buy passes. See our IC card guide.
1. Shuri Castle Park (Castle)
The Lowdown: The rebuilt Seiden is the reason you’re here. Arrive 20 minutes before your slot to walk up through the free gates. Allow 90 minutes in total.
Where: 1-2 Shuri Kinjo-cho, Naha. About 15 minutes on foot from Yui Rail Shuri Station.
The Vibe: Red lacquer, stone walls, tour groups and a view over the city.
Price: Adult ¥1,000 from 23 November (¥400 until 21 November).
ลิงก์ทางการ: oki-park.jp/shurijo
💡 Japan Pro Tip: Yui Rail day passes have had a Shuri Castle discount (¥400 down to ¥320 at the old price). The new-price discount hasn’t been published, so ask at the window.
2. Shuri Soba (Lunch)

The Lowdown: Handmade Okinawa soba, with noodles made fresh every morning and a bonito and pork broth. It’s the local lunch to have in Shuri, and it sells out.
Where: 1-7 Shuri Akata-cho, about 5 minutes on foot from Shuri Station.
The Vibe: Small, local, queue at the door.
Price: Not published. Okinawa soba is a cheap lunch, so bring cash.
ลิงก์ทางการ: Rurubu listing (Japanese)
💡 Japan Pro Tip: Open 11:00–14:00 or until the noodles run out. Closed Thursdays and Sundays. Go at opening, or pick a different day.
3. Kinjo-cho Stone-Paved Road (Historic walk)

The Lowdown: About 300 m of stone paving laid in 1522, part of the old royal road from the castle. It survived the 1945 battle and is listed among Japan’s 100 best roads.
Where: Shuri Kinjo-cho, downhill from the castle. About 15 minutes on foot from Shuri Station.
The Vibe: Steep, quiet, stone walls and old houses. The best free thing in Shuri.
Price: Free.
ลิงก์ทางการ: Japan Tourism Agency: Kinjo-cho Stone Pavement Road
💡 Japan Pro Tip: Walk it downhill after the castle, not up. The stones are slippery after rain, so wear shoes with grip.
4. Tamaudun Royal Mausoleum (World Heritage site)

The Lowdown: The stone tomb of the Ryukyu kings, built in the early 1500s and part of the UNESCO listing. It’s a short walk from Shureimon and rarely crowded.
Where: Shuri Kinjo-cho, about 5 minutes on foot from Shureimon gate.
The Vibe: Calm and a bit eerie. Ten minutes is enough, twenty if you read everything.
Price: Adult ¥300, junior high and under ¥150, preschoolers free. Open daily 9:00–18:00, last entry 17:30.
ลิงก์ทางการ: Naha City: Tamaudun (Japanese)
💡 Japan Pro Tip: A Yui Rail day pass gets you in for ¥240. Do it between the castle and lunch.
5. Kokusai-dori and Makishi Public Market (Evening)

The Lowdown: Naha’s main drag, about 1.6 km of souvenir shops, bars and izakaya between Kencho-mae and Makishi stations. Just off it, the rebuilt First Makishi Public Market (reopened 2023) still runs its “mochiage” system: buy fish downstairs and have it cooked upstairs.
Where: Kencho-mae or Makishi stations on the Yui Rail.
The Vibe: Loud, touristy and fun after dark. The back alleys are where the good bars are.
Price: Free to wander. Budget for dinner and drinks.
ลิงก์ทางการ: JNTO: Kokusai-dori Street
💡 Japan Pro Tip: End with awamori, Okinawa’s rice spirit. Order kūsu (aged awamori) on the rocks or with water. It’s strong, so go slowly and drink water between rounds.
Got more days? Okinawa has three national parks: Yanbaru in the north, the Kerama Islands off Naha, and Iriomote-Ishigaki far to the south-west. See our national parks guide.
