Awa Odori 2027: Tokushima Dance Festival Guide to Tickets, Free Streets and Joining In
Awa Odori fills central Tokushima with dancers every year from 12 to 15 August, from about 18:00 to 22:00 each night. Watching from the street is free; a paid seat in one of the three grandstand venues cost ¥1,000 to ¥6,000 in 2026, and anyone can join the dancing for free in a beginners’ group called a niwaka-ren.
This guide covers how a festival night actually runs, paid stages versus free streets, when tickets go on sale, how to dance as a tourist, where to sleep when Tokushima is full, and the late trains out. Organisers had not announced the 2027 edition when we checked, so times and prices below are from 2026 and labelled that way. For the rest of the year, see our Japanese festival calendar. Last checked 23 October 2026.

When is Awa Odori in 2027?
Expect Thursday 12 to Sunday 15 August 2027. The street festival is held on 12–15 August every year, over the Obon holiday, and 2027 falls on a long weekend. The organiser, the Awa Odori Mirai e Tsunagu executive committee, had not published 2027 dates, prices or a ticket calendar when we checked its official site on 23 October 2026.
In 2026 there was also a ticketed indoor show the day before, on 11 August (a public holiday). If that pattern repeats, Wednesday 11 August 2027 would be the warm-up day. Treat that as a guess until the committee confirms it.
| Day (2026) | What ran | Where | Ticket? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tue 11 Aug | “Takumi no Butai Yuribi” stage show, 12:00, 15:30, 19:00 (about 80 min each) | Asty Tokushima (indoor) | Yes: ¥2,800–¥5,000 |
| Wed 12 – Sat 15 Aug | “Yume no Butai Matsuribi” stage show, 11:00, 13:30, 16:00 (about 70 min each) | Awagin Hall (indoor) | Yes: ¥2,800–¥4,500 |
| Wed 12 – Sat 15 Aug | Grandstand venues, part 1 18:00–19:40, part 2 20:20–22:00 | Aibahama, Minamiuchimachi, Konyamachi | Yes: ¥1,000–¥6,000 (¥15,000 special seats) |
| Wed 12 – Sat 15 Aug | Free stages 18:10–22:00; odori hiroba 18:00–22:00 | Ryogoku Honmachi, Shinmachibashi, two riverside parks | No |

What happens on an Awa Odori night, hour by hour
The daytime is quiet on the streets. The indoor Matsuribi shows at Awagin Hall run at 11:00, 13:30 and 16:00, which makes them the only way to see dancers in the heat of the day, or on a night you can’t stay late.
- 18:00 — Part 1 starts at the three paid venues, and the free odori hiroba (dance squares) open by the river.
- 18:10 — The two free street stages, Ryogoku Honmachi and Shinmachibashi, start.
- 19:40–20:20 — Changeover at the paid venues. Part 1 and part 2 are separate tickets and the stands are cleared in between.
- 20:20 — Part 2 starts. At Minamiuchimachi it ends with the “so-odori”, a mass dance by the groups of the Awa Odori Promotion Association.
- 21:51 and 22:47 — The two extra limited expresses leave Tokushima for Takamatsu (2026 times).
- 22:00 — Official end of the paid and free venues.
Ren (dance groups) move through the venues one after another, so each venue gives you a steady parade rather than one big set piece. The order of groups by venue and time is published as a PDF on the viewers’ page of the official site before the festival.
Paid enbujo or free streets: which is better?
Do one of each. A grandstand seat gets you a clear, front-on view of the best-known ren for 100 minutes, with no shoving. The free streets get you closer, louder and more chaotic, and you can wander between them.
| Venue (2026) | Type | Seats | Walk from JR Tokushima | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aibahama | Paid | About 4,600 | 5 min | Biggest and closest to the station |
| Minamiuchimachi | Paid | About 2,700 | 12 min | Only venue with ¥15,000 special seats; so-odori at the end of part 2 |
| Konyamachi | Paid | About 2,200 | 15 min | On 13 Aug (part 2 only) groups dance in circles; all seats unreserved, ¥2,000 |
| Ryogoku Honmachi | ฟรี | Standing | 7 min | 18:10–22:00; sponsored, so the name may change |
| Shinmachibashi | ฟรี | Standing | Not stated | 18:10–22:00 |
| Odori hiroba (Shinmachibashi-higashi Park, Ryogokubashi-nishi Park) | ฟรี | Standing | Not stated | 18:00–22:00; groups dance freely, not in procession |
Seat numbers and walking times are from the official 2026 schedule. Venue names include sponsors and change from year to year, so check them against the 2027 map before you go.
Getting a good spot for free
Arrive before 18:00 if you want to stand at the front of a free stage; the space along the route is first come, first served. The odori hiroba are the most relaxed option, because groups dance in a loose crowd and you can move around them.

Awa Odori tickets: prices and when they go on sale
Paid grandstand prices were the same at all three venues in 2026. Each ticket covers one part (part 1 or part 2) of one night.
| Seat (2026) | Price | Notes |

| Special viewing seat | ¥15,000 | Minamiuchimachi only, reserved |
| SS | ¥6,000 | Reserved |
| S | ¥3,000 | Reserved |
| A | ¥2,500 | Reserved |
| B | ¥2,000 | Reserved |
| C | ¥1,000 | Unreserved |
| Matsuribi indoor show | ¥2,800–¥4,500 | SS ¥4,500, S ¥3,500, A ¥2,800 |
| Yuribi indoor show (11 Aug) | ¥2,800–¥5,000 | Special ¥5,000, S ¥3,800, A ¥2,800 |
The 2026 sales calendar ran like this:
- Late April to early May — group applications (13 tickets or more per venue and part) through Pia, results by email in mid-May.
- 13–21 June — presale on Ticket Pia and the official site (Walkerplus).
- 1 July, 10:00 — general sale on Ticket Pia, the official ticket channel.
If the festival is called off for weather and tickets are refunded, handling and delivery fees are not returned, according to the committee. Plan for a similar calendar in 2027: watch the official site from April, and have your seats chosen before the June presale.
Can tourists dance in Awa Odori? Joining a niwaka-ren
Yes, and it costs nothing. Niwaka-ren are open groups for people who just turn up: no advance application, no fee and no costume. Dancers from well-known ren teach the basic steps on the spot, then lead the group into a dance venue.
In 2026 the meeting point was in front of the Awa Bank head office, with gathering times of 18:30, 19:30 and 21:30 each night from 12 to 15 August, according to the Walkerplus event listing. The official site publishes a niwaka-ren leaflet each year; check it for 2027 times and the exact spot. Women can dance either the men’s or the women’s style (HugKum).
- Wear shoes you can bend your knees in. The men’s style is low and bouncy.
- Bring water and a towel. It is mid-August, outdoors, at night but still hot.
- Keep your bag small. You will be dancing with your hands up.
If you are in the area earlier, Naruto’s own Awa Odori ran on 9–11 August in 2026, from 19:00 to 22:00 by JR Naruto Station, with a free open group from about 20:00 and paid seats at ¥900 in advance (Naruto City tourism). Note that Naruto cancels in rain.

Where to stay for Awa Odori when Tokushima is full
Book a room the moment you decide to go. Awa Odori draws about 1.1 million visits over the festival (Walkerplus), it falls in Obon week, and central Tokushima has a limited number of hotels. If the city is sold out, base yourself somewhere with a late train back.
| Base | How you get back (12–15 Aug 2026) | Worth it if… |
|---|---|---|
| Tokushima city | Walk | You can find a room at all |
| Takamatsu | Extra limited express “Awa Odori 2” 21:51 → Takamatsu 23:04; “Awa Odori 4” 22:47 → 0:01 | You want a big hotel stock and Kagawa udon the next day |
| Naruto | Extra local train 22:09 → Naruto 22:46 | You also want Naruto’s own Awa Odori or the whirlpools |
| Anan (Mugi Line) | Extra locals 22:00, 22:30, 23:35 → Anan (about 45–50 min) | You have a car-free plan south along the coast |
| Osaka or Kobe | Highway bus, about 2.5 hours to Osaka | A daytime visit, unless you have confirmed a late bus back |
Train times are from JR Shikoku’s 2026 summer extra-train notice, which also lists an extra local to Itano at 23:37 and one to Awa-Kawashima at 22:16. JR Shikoku warns that the number of cars may change at short notice, and these trains will be packed. For the Osaka option we could not confirm a bus late enough to see the evening dancing, so do not plan on one without checking. Our ryokan guide covers how to book a traditional inn if you would rather stay out in the countryside.
How to get to Tokushima for Awa Odori
Tokushima is not on the Shinkansen. The fastest way from Tokyo is to fly; from Osaka or Kobe, take the highway bus.
| From | How | Time | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tokyo (Haneda) | JAL or ANA to Tokushima Awaodori Airport, then the airport limousine bus to Tokushima Station | About 80 min flight + about 30 min bus | Bus ¥800 |
| โอซากา | Highway bus to Tokushima Station | About 2.5 hours | Check the operator |
| Takamatsu | JR limited express Uzushio | About 1 hour 10 min | ¥3,370 reserved (2026) |
| By car | Tokushima Expressway, Tokushima IC | About 15 min to the centre | Parking ¥2,000 (reserved, 2026) |
Sources: Tokushima Airport, Tokushima Bus airport limousine, Tokushima Prefecture tourism, Ekitan and the committee’s parking page. The limousine bus times are tied to flights, and if a flight lands late the bus waits; on a very late arrival it may not.
Driving in during the festival
The centre is closed to traffic in the evening. In 2026 the committee sold reserved spaces for ¥2,000 per car through akippa, and ran a shuttle from a 531-space lot at the Marine Terminal from 16:00 to 22:45, for ¥300 per person each way. The Shinmachi and Konyamachi car parks sit inside the closed zone and cannot be entered while the roads are shut.
Local buses
Tokushima Bus and city-contracted routes detoured around the centre from 17:00 to 22:30 on 12–15 August 2026 and added extra buses, but warned that some passengers might not get on (Tokushima Bus). Walk if you can.
Awa Odori crowds, rain and safety
The festival goes ahead in light rain and is cancelled in heavy rain or storms (Walkerplus). Mid-August is typhoon season, so keep one spare night if you can.
- The committee publishes a heatstroke advice sheet and a tsunami evacuation map on the viewers’ page. Tokushima is a coastal city; glance at the map once.
- The paid stands are cleared between parts. If you bought part 1 only, you will be leaving just as part 2 crowds arrive.
- Car parks inside the traffic-control zone let you out but not in. Do not drive in at 18:00 expecting to park.
- Extra trains and buses fill up. Be on the platform early, especially for the 22:47 to Takamatsu.
Know before you go
Buy part 2 for the finale
At Minamiuchimachi, part 2 ends with the so-odori mass dance (2026 programme).
Use the daytime shows
The indoor Matsuribi shows at 11:00, 13:30 and 16:00 are the best fallback in rain or heat.
Dance on your second night
Watch first so you know the rhythm, then join a free niwaka-ren.
Check the running order
The official group-by-venue timetable PDF tells you which famous ren dance where.
Lock in the last train
From a base outside Tokushima, the 2026 extra trains to Takamatsu left at 21:51 and 22:47.
Cash and a towel
Bring both for stalls and the humidity; the dancing runs until 22:00.
Koenji Awa Odori: the Tokyo alternative
If you can’t get to Shikoku, Tokyo’s Koenji district holds its own Awa Odori in late August. The 67th edition ran on 29 and 30 August 2026 (official site). It is smaller than Tokushima’s and has no grandstands, but it is an easy evening from central Tokyo; see our Koenji guide for the neighbourhood.
What else to do around Awa Odori in Tokushima
เดอะ Awa Odori Kaikan at the foot of Mt Bizan stages the dance all year: daytime shows at 11:00, 14:00, 15:00 and 16:00 (adults ¥1,300) and an evening show at 20:00 with a rotating famous ren (adults ¥1,600). The ropeway on the fifth floor goes to the summit in about six minutes for ¥1,500 return. Note that the Kaikan does not take facility bookings for 11–15 August.
For a day out after the festival, the Iya Valley in western Tokushima has vine bridges and deep gorges; our Iya Valley guide covers the buses, which are few. Or cross to Takamatsu and the art islands. If you are still choosing when to travel, see our เวลาที่ดีที่สุดในการไปเยือนญี่ปุ่น guide.
