Things to Do in Akihabara (2026): 14 Local Picks for Anime Fans
The best things to do in Akihabara are hunting capsule toys at the 500-machine Gashapon Department Store, digging through eight floors of second-hand anime goods at Mandarake Complex, playing retro arcade cabinets at Super Potato and walking Chuo-dori when it closes to cars on Sunday afternoons. Most shops open between 10:00 and 12:00 and close around 20:00, while the arcades and the Gashapon Department Store run until 23:00 or later. Plan an afternoon and an evening, not an early morning.

We live and work in Tokyo, and everything below was checked against official sites on 17 October 2026.

What are the best things to do in Akihabara?
1. Gashapon Department Store and Gashapon Bandai Official Shop (Capsule toys)

ข้อมูลเบื้องต้น: Bandai Namco’s capsule-toy floor opened inside namco Akihabara on 1 March 2023. It pairs the Gashapon Department Store, which has 500 machines on its own, with Bandai’s official Gashapon shop. New series land here early, and it is one of the most photographed gacha halls in Tokyo.
ที่ไหน: namco Akihabara 4F, 1-15-9 Sotokanda, Chiyoda-ku. 1 minute from JR Akihabara.
บรรยากาศ: Bright, packed and noisy. Rows of machines floor to ceiling.
ราคา: Free entry. You pay per capsule.

💡 เคล็ดลับจากญี่ปุ่น: It is open 10:00–23:00 every day. Go after 20:00, when the shops around it close and the queues for new series thin out. Bring ¥100 coins and use the change machines before you start.
2. Akihabara Gachapon Kaikan (Capsule toys)
ข้อมูลเบื้องต้น: A long-running independent gachapon hall, with hundreds of machines packed into a narrow ground-floor shop. Its strength is the weird stuff: niche joke series and lines from smaller makers you won’t find at the big Bandai store.
ที่ไหน: MN Building 1F, 3-15-5 Sotokanda. 2 minutes from Suehirocho Station (Ginza Line), 7 minutes from JR Akihabara.
บรรยากาศ: Cramped, local and fun. More collectors than tourists.
ราคา: Free entry. Capsules typically cost ¥100–¥500.
ลิงก์ทางการ: akibagacha.com
💡 เคล็ดลับจากญี่ปุ่น: Hours are 11:00–20:00 on weekdays and 11:00–19:00 on Sundays and holidays. The shop posts its latest hours and new lines on X, so check before you make a special trip.
3. Akihabara Radio Kaikan (Anime and hobby mall)

ข้อมูลเบื้องต้น: The landmark building opposite the station’s Electric Town exit has ten floors of hobby shops. Tenants include AmiAmi, K-Books, Volks and Kaiyodo’s Hobby Lobby, plus trading card shops on several floors. It is the fastest way to see a cross-section of Akihabara in one building.
ที่ไหน: 1-15-16 Sotokanda, Chiyoda-ku.
บรรยากาศ: Glass cases of figures, card collectors and serious shoppers.
ราคา: Free entry.
ลิงก์ทางการ: akihabara-radiokaikan.co.jp
💡 เคล็ดลับจากญี่ปุ่น: Most shops close at 20:00, but opening times vary by shop. Take the lift to the top floor and walk down, checking the event spaces for pop-ups as you go.
4. Mandarake Complex (Second-hand anime and manga)
ข้อมูลเบื้องต้น: Eight floors of pre-owned manga, figures, cels, cosplay and vintage toys. The floors are split by fandom: boys’ comics and vintage goods on 3F, BL and girls’ comics on 5F, and robot and tokusatsu toys on 7F–8F. Every item is priced individually, so compare a few floors before you buy.

ราคา: Free entry.

💡 เคล็ดลับจากญี่ปุ่น: It opens at 12:00, later than most shops, and closes at 20:00. 4F and part of 5F are doujinshi (fan comics) floors, with a lot of adult-only content. If you’re travelling with kids, stick to the toy floors.
5. Super Potato (Retro games)
ข้อมูลเบื้องต้น: Three floors of Famicom, Mega Drive and PC Engine games, consoles and accessories. The 5F is a small retro arcade with classic cabinets and a rest area. It’s the best-known retro game shop in Tokyo.

💡 เคล็ดลับจากญี่ปุ่น: Open 11:00–20:00, every day of the year. Japanese consoles are region-locked for some systems, so check compatibility with your console at home before you buy.
6. Animate Akihabara (New anime goods)
ข้อมูลเบื้องต้น: Animate is Japan’s biggest anime goods chain, and its Akihabara flagship spreads across two main buildings and an ANNEX. The ANNEX B1–1F is “POP @P CAPSULE,” another large capsule-toy floor. Its 4F–7F host rotating official shops and events, which is where oshikatsu (fan support) shopping happens.
ที่ไหน: 4-3-1 Sotokanda, Chiyoda-ku.
บรรยากาศ: New releases, character walls and fans buying for their favourite.
ราคา: Free entry. Tax-free available.
ลิงก์ทางการ: Animate Akihabara

7. Yodobashi Akiba (Electronics and cameras)
ข้อมูลเบื้องต้น: The district’s giant electronics store, right by the station’s Showa-dori side. It covers cameras and lenses, toys and gacha machines, with a restaurant floor on 8F. It’s the most practical place for camera and lens shopping, which is a big topic on #akihabara.
ที่ไหน: 1-1 Kanda Hanaoka-cho, Chiyoda-ku. 1 minute from Akihabara Station.
บรรยากาศ: Huge, efficient and busy.
ราคา: Free entry. A Pepper Lunch beef pepper rice on 8F is ¥840.
ลิงก์ทางการ: Yodobashi Akiba
💡 เคล็ดลับจากญี่ปุ่น: It opens earlier than most Akihabara shops, so it’s a good first stop. Bring your passport for tax-free. Some cameras sold here are Japan-market models with Japanese-only menus, so ask for the “international model.”
8. GiGO Arcades (Claw machines and games)

ข้อมูลเบื้องต้น: Akihabara has several GiGO arcades, run by the company that took over the old Sega arcades. GiGO 2, 3 and 5 are all on the main strip. Expect claw machines with anime prizes, rhythm games and purikura photo booths.
ที่ไหน: GiGO Akihabara 2 (1-15-1 Sotokanda), GiGO Akihabara 3 (1-11-11 Sotokanda) and GiGO Akihabara 5 (1-10-1 Sotokanda).

ลิงก์ทางการ: maidcafe-athome.com
💡 เคล็ดลับจากญี่ปุ่น: Don’t follow the maids handing out flyers on the street. Those cafes can add hidden charges. Pick a cafe yourself, and read the price board at the door before you sit down.
10. Kanda Myojin Shrine (The anime shrine)
ข้อมูลเบื้องต้น: This shrine dates back to 730 and is Akihabara’s local shrine. It’s also an anime pilgrimage site. It appears in Love Live! School Idol Project, where the characters train on its stairs, and it regularly hosts anime collaborations and exhibitions. Its deities include Daikokuten and Ebisu, so local shop owners come here to pray for business luck.
ที่ไหน: 2-16-2 Sotokanda. 7 minutes from JR Akihabara.
บรรยากาศ: Vermilion gates and calm grounds, a short walk from the noise of the main strip.
ราคา: Free. The museum is ¥500 for adults, ¥300 for students and free for junior high age and under.
ลิงก์ทางการ: kandamyoujin.or.jp
💡 เคล็ดลับจากญี่ปุ่น: The grounds are open around the clock and the charm counter opens at 9:00, which makes this the best first stop before the shops open. The shrine posted new charm-counter hours on 28 September 2026, so check its notice for this year’s closing time. The museum is open 9:00–16:00 (last entry 15:45) and closed on Thursdays.

12. 2k540 Aki-Oka Artisan (Craft shops under the tracks)
ข้อมูลเบื้องต้น: A row of small craft and design workshops under the Yamanote Line, between Akihabara and Okachimachi. You’ll find leather, ceramics, jewellery and Japanese-made goods, often sold by the maker.
ที่ไหน: 5-9 Ueno, Taito-ku.
บรรยากาศ: White, quiet arches with makers at work.
ราคา: Free entry.
ลิงก์ทางการ: 2k540 Aki-Oka Artisan (GO TOKYO)
💡 เคล็ดลับจากญี่ปุ่น: It’s open 11:00–19:00 and closed on Wednesdays. This is the best place in Akihabara for a gift that isn’t anime.

14. Akihabara’s Electronics Backstreets (Parts and retro tech)

💡 เคล็ดลับจากญี่ปุ่น: Many shops close by 19:00–20:00 and some don’t open on every day. If you’re hunting a specific part, go on a weekday afternoon.
Is Akihabara’s Chuo-dori closed to cars on Sundays?
Yes. Chuo-dori becomes a pedestrian zone (hokosha tengoku) every Sunday from 13:00 to 17:00. It’s cancelled in bad weather, and you must push bicycles through it. The next two are Sunday 18 October and Sunday 25 October 2026. It’s the best time to photograph the street and its signs, which are the most-liked Akihabara images on Instagram.
Until 25 October 2026, the local association also runs the Akihabara Omotenashi Fair 2026. The Akihabara Electric Town Organization posts each week’s status.
What is the etiquette in Akihabara?
- Don’t photograph maids or flyer staff without asking. Taking photos of the maids or the inside of a maid cafe is commonly forbidden. A posed photo is a paid extra.
- Look for no-photo signs in shops. Many hobby shops ban photography inside. Ask before you take a picture of a display case.
- Respect the adult floors. Several stores have 18+ sections. Don’t take photos or bring children there.
- Take your rubbish with you. Street bins are rare, and gacha halls have their own capsule recycling boxes.
- Don’t eat while walking in packed shops. Step aside, and keep your bag in front of you in tight aisles.
How do I plan a half-day in Akihabara?
This route runs from 10:00 into the early evening and works best on a Sunday. If you only have half a day, start at 13:00 with the pedestrian zone.

| Time | Stop | Why then |
|---|---|---|
| 10:00 | Kanda Myojin | Calm before the crowds; charm counter opens 9:00 |
| 11:00 | Super Potato | Opens 11:00 |
| 12:00 | Mandarake Complex | Opens 12:00 |
| 13:00 | Chuo-dori pedestrian zone + Gachapon Kaikan | Sunday street closure starts 13:00 |
| 14:30 | Radio Kaikan and Gashapon Department Store | Top to bottom, then 4F gacha |
| 16:00 | Animate or Yodobashi Akiba | Shopping and tax-free |
| 17:30 | mAAch ecute | Evening on the deck and a craft beer |
If you start from Tokyo Station, Akihabara is 4 minutes away on the JR Yamanote Line. For the rest of the city, see our first time in Tokyo guide.
How does tax-free shopping work in Akihabara?
Most big Akihabara stores, including Yodobashi and Animate, offer tax-free shopping. Bring your physical passport. The minimum is ¥5,000 before tax at one shop on one day.
The system changes on 1 November 2026. From that date, you pay the full price at the till, including tax. The shop refunds you after customs confirms at the airport that you’re taking the goods out of Japan. Purchases up to 31 October 2026 follow the old rules. Read our full Japan tax refund guide before you shop.
3 things most Akihabara guides miss
- Tokyo Anime Center is no longer in Akihabara. Its physical venue is now DNP Plaza Shibuya. Until 8 November 2026 it’s showing the Angelique 30th anniversary exhibition. Don’t go looking for it in Akihabara. See tokyoanimecenter.jp.
- Opening times decide your route. Mandarake opens at 12:00 and Super Potato at 11:00, but the Gashapon Department Store and GiGO run until 23:00 or later. Do the shrine and Yodobashi in the morning, the collector shops in the afternoon, and gacha and arcades at night.
- Closure days can catch you out. 2k540 closes every Wednesday. mAAch ecute closes one day a month (next: Monday 9 November). The Kanda Myojin museum closes on Thursdays. If you’re planning around Sunday’s pedestrian zone, check these days first.
Is Akihabara worth visiting if I don’t like anime?
Yes. You can shop for cameras and electronics at Yodobashi, browse craft shops at 2k540, visit Kanda Myojin Shrine, and have a drink at mAAch ecute’s riverside bars, all within walking distance.
What time do shops open in Akihabara?
Most open at 10:00–11:00 and close around 20:00. Mandarake Complex opens at 12:00. The Gashapon Department Store is open until 23:00, and the GiGO arcades are open until 23:30.
Where is the biggest gachapon hall in Akihabara?

How much does a maid cafe in Akihabara cost?
