The catch is the calendar. Between now and March 2027 the Setouchi art islands each close on different days, Inujima shuts completely from December to February, and the Chichu Art Museum on Naoshima is closed from 12 January to 19 March 2027.

This guide is built around that calendar: which days work for which island, what each museum costs and how to book, and the winter ferries from Uno and Takamatsu. Since October 2024 all Benesse Art Site tickets on Naoshima, Teshima and Inujima are sold online, and several are tied to a date and time (Benesse ticket information). For most travellers it is the reason to come, so if your dates are flexible, go in November or December. From October to February it opens 10:00 to 16:00 with last entry at 15:30, and tickets cost ¥1,800 online or ¥2,000 on site with a date-and-time booking (museum page). It closes on Tuesdays from March to November and on Tuesdays to Thursdays from 1 December to the end of February.

The same Tuesday-to-Thursday winter closure covers Les Archives du Cœur (¥600 / ¥700), Teshima Yokoo House (¥600 / ¥700) and La forêt des murmures. The Needle Factory closes entirely from December to February.

Teshima Art Museum’s late-autumn hours are short: last entry is 15:30. If you are coming from Naoshima on the 12:10 boat, you arrive in Ieura at 12:32 and still have time, but don’t leave it to the afternoon boat.

Is Inujima worth it off-season?

In November and from March, yes, on a Friday to Monday. Inujima Seirensho Art Museum, set in a former refinery, opens 9:00 to 16:30 and closes Tuesday to Thursday from March to November; from 1 December to the end of February it is closed every day (museum page).

Since 1 March 2026, visits are by guided tour. You meet at the Inujima Ticket Center at one of seven times between 9:00 and 15:45, and staff walk you through the museum and the F-Art House in about 45 minutes (Benesse notice). Tours are in Japanese with English text guides on request, and the Inujima Art Project Pass covers everything on the island for ¥2,100 online or ¥2,300 on site.

What about Megijima and Ogijima outside the Triennale?

These two small Setouchi art islands off Takamatsu fill up during the Setouchi Triennale and go quiet between festivals. Between festivals, many indoor festival works close or open only on set days, so check each work on the Setouchi Triennale site before you sail. Outdoor works and the islands themselves are always there.

Megijima: 20 minutes from Takamatsu. Shinro Ohtake’s MECON, in the courtyard of the former Megi Elementary School, costs ¥510 and opens 10:40 to 16:30; Benesse lists its closing days on the open days calendar (MECON page). The island also has the Onigashima cave, a lookout over Takamatsu and the tall stone o’ote walls built against winter wind (Triennale guide).

Ogijima: 40 minutes from Takamatsu, with one port and a hillside village you can walk. Jaume Plensa’s Ogijima’s Soul is the ferry terminal itself, so you see it whenever you land.

Meon ferries leave Takamatsu at 8:00, 10:00, 12:00, 14:00, 16:00 and 18:10, calling at Megijima then Ogijima, and return from Ogijima at 7:00, 9:00, 11:00, 13:00, 15:00 and 17:00 (Meon timetable). One way costs ¥370 to Megijima, ¥510 to Ogijima and ¥240 between the two, so both islands fit into one Takamatsu day.

How do you get to the Setouchi art islands in winter: Uno or Takamatsu?

Uno, on the Okayama side, is the cheap and frequent way to Naoshima. Takamatsu, on Shikoku, is better for Teshima, Megijima and Ogijima, and for a night in a bigger city. The executive committee approved the plan on 5 August 2026: 117 days across spring, summer and autumn, with a shorter summer season and longer spring and autumn seasons, on the same 17 islands and areas as 2025 (KSB Setouchi Broadcasting).

The full 2028 season dates had not been published on the official site when we checked.
