The 2026 season ends on Sunday 8 November, most outdoor works then close for the snow, and what stays open runs on reduced days. The Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale has run every three years since 2000, and many commissioned works stayed after each edition. The organisers split the region into six areas: Tokamachi, Kawanishi, Nakasato, Matsudai, Matsunoyama and Tsunan.

In non-festival years, the Echigo-Tsumari Art Field runs a year-round programme. The 2026 edition runs from 25 April to 8 November 2026, with venues closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays except public holidays (Niigata Prefecture tourism; official programme).

The upside of an off year is space. During a Triennale, popular works have queues and timed tickets. Outside it, you can stand almost alone in a closed schoolhouse or a mountain tunnel and take your time.

Which Echigo-Tsumari artworks can you see outside Triennale years?

These are the works that matter most to a first visit, with the hours the official site lists for the 2026–27 off-season. Hours and fees come from each work’s official page and the winter notice published on 16 October 2026 (Echigo-Tsumari Art Field).

Work / venue

지역

성인 요금

Late 2026 – early 2027

MonET museum: Leandro Erlich, Palimpsest: pond of sky, plus 15 permanent works

Tokamachi

¥1,000 (¥1,200 with special exhibition)

Year-round, 10:00–17:00; closed Tue & Wed; closed 26 Dec–1 Jan

Matsudai NOHBUTAI field museum (about 40 works along a 2 km stretch)

Matsudai

¥1,200 field museum ticket

Year-round, 10:00–17:00; closed Tue & Wed; closed 26 Dec–6 Jan

Kusama Yayoi, Tsumari in Bloom

Matsudai (outside NOHBUTAI)

Outdoor

Daytime viewing listed for the 2026 season

Ilya & Emilia Kabakov, The Rice Fields

Matsudai

Outdoor

Viewing deck restricted 1 Sep to end of Dec for painting work

Ma Yansong / MAD Architects, Tunnel of Light (Kiyotsu Gorge Tunnel)

Nakasato

¥1,200 to 20 Nov; ¥1,000 from 21 Nov

8:30–17:00 to end Nov; 9:00–16:00 Dec–Feb; may close for snow

Christian Boltanski & Jean Kalman, The Last Class

Matsunoyama

¥800

10:00–16:00; weekends and holidays only from 28 Nov; closed 21 Dec–8 Jan

James Turrell, House of Light

Kawanishi

¥800 day visit

11:30–15:00 Nov–Mar; closed Tue & Wed from 1 Dec

Kyororo, Echigo-Matsunoyama Museum of Natural Science

Matsunoyama

¥600

9:00–16:00 from 1 Dec; closed Tue & Wed from 1 Dec

Kabakov, The Monument of Tolerance

Matsudai

Check on site

Open to 23 Nov 2026, then closed for winter

Hachi & Seizo Tashima Museum of Picture Book Art

Tokamachi

Check on site

Open to 23 Nov 2026, then closed for winter

Children’s fees are roughly half. Leandro Erlich’s courtyard work Palimpsest: pond of sky is the headline, and the building holds 15 permanent pieces plus a seasonal special exhibition. It is also the information centre, so pick up a map and confirm what’s open before heading out.

Matsudai NOHBUTAI: the best walk

The NOHBUTAI building connects directly to Matsudai Station on the Hokuhoku Line. From it, about 40 works line a roughly 2 km route up to Matsudai Castle, including Kusama’s flower sculpture and Kabakov’s The Rice Fields (official access overview). A shuttle runs as needed between NOHBUTAI and Matsudai Castle (about 7 minutes) for ticket holders (NOHBUTAI page).

Inside, the Echigo Matsudai Satoyama Shokudo serves a local buffet. Its New Rice Buffet runs from 19 September to 30 November 2026, closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Tunnel of Light: go after 20 November and pay less

The Kiyotsu Gorge Tunnel is a 750 m walking tunnel that Ma Yansong turned into an art piece for the 2018 Triennale. Adult entry is ¥1,200 until 20 November 2026 and ¥1,000 from 21 November (Tunnel of Light page). The last 2026 dates that needed advance timed tickets ended on 3 November.

The Last Class and House of Light: book your day around them

The Last Class fills the former Higashikawa Elementary School; Boltanski reworked it after finding the school snowed in during the record snowfall of winter 2006 (artwork page). From 28 November 2026 it opens only on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, so a weekday winter trip will miss it.

James Turrell’s House of Light is an artwork you can visit by day or sleep in overnight. Japan-guide puts the whole trip at about two hours and about ¥7,500 with a good connection, and warns that good connections are rare (japan-guide).

구간

노선

시간

참고

Tokyo → Echigo-Yuzawa

JR Joetsu Shinkansen

75–90 min

Covered by the Japan Rail Pass

Echigo-Yuzawa → Tokamachi

Hokuhoku Line (Hokuetsu Express)

약 30분

About half of trains start at Muikamachi, not Echigo-Yuzawa

Tokamachi ↔ Matsudai

Hokuhoku Line

약 10분

Roughly one train an hour

Echigo-Yuzawa → Tunnel of Light

Express bus toward Morimiyanohara

About 25 min + 30 min walk

Get off at Kiyotsukyo Entrance; limited service

The Hokuhoku Line is a private railway, so the Japan Rail Pass does not cover the section between Muikamachi and Tokamachi; you pay that part separately (japan-guide). According to GLTJP’s JR East Pass guide, the JR East Pass (Nagano, Niigata area) does include the Hokuetsu Express lines (GLTJP).

Two timing details save real time. The Hokuhoku Line’s 14 March 2026 timetable notes a standard 6-minute transfer from the Shinkansen to local trains at Echigo-Yuzawa (Hokuhoku Line timetable), and the Hokuhoku Line timetable PDF shows which trains run through. Check it before you book a Shinkansen, not after.

Echigo-Yuzawa is also a ski town; to pair art with snow, see our ski day trip from Tokyo guide. Wondering whether a pass pays off for this route? The official site and japan-guide both say a car is the best way to reach the mountain works, and buses are sparse (How To Get Around). But two of the strongest clusters, Tokamachi and Matsudai, are station-side and walkable.

What works on foot and by train

Tokamachi: MonET is 10 minutes’ walk from the station. A city-style SATOCHARI costs ¥2,000 a day and a sports e-bike ¥3,000 a day; rentals run 9:00–17:00 from late April to November, not in snow (Tokamachi tourism).

One rule catches people out: you can only ride within the area of the office you rented from. You cannot cycle from Tokamachi to Matsudai and drop the bike there. Helmets are free, and in-person rentals are cash only.

Taxis, rental cars and tours

Taxi firms serve Tokamachi, Matsudai and Tsunan stations, and rental car outlets sit next to Tokamachi and Echigo-Yuzawa stations (official list). You need an International Driving Permit. For a no-stress day, the official bus tours start and end at Echigo-Yuzawa Station and run mainly on weekends and holidays (official tours).

떠나기 전에 알아 둘 것

Tuesday and Wednesday

Most venues close on both days, all year.
