Seven work as day trips, and Hakuba and Nozawa Onsen are best as overnight trips. For each one we list the 2026–27 dates, travel time and fare, a 1-day lift price, rental and who it suits. Then come rail passes, buses, gear, onsen and a comparison table. We checked dates and prices against each resort’s official site, and we say where 2026–27 figures aren’t published yet.

Can you really ski on a day trip from Tokyo?

Yes. The Joetsu Shinkansen reaches Echigo-Yuzawa in as little as 66 minutes, and the Hokuriku Shinkansen reaches Karuizawa in 60–72 minutes. Leave Tokyo at 7am and you can be on the slopes by 9am and back in Tokyo for dinner. Regular unreserved fares are ¥6,370 each way to Echigo-Yuzawa and ¥5,600 each way to Karuizawa (fares checked 17 October 2026).

Japan has rarely been more popular with visitors: it was voted Favourite Country for a Holiday for the second year running (JNTO, 9 October 2026). Expect busy trains on Saturdays, the New Year holiday, the 9–11 January long weekend and the 20–22 March equinox weekend. If you can, ski on a weekday.

What are the best ski resorts near Tokyo for 2026–27?

We label dates as Confirmed when the resort has published them for 2026–27. Dates marked Expected use last season’s dates as a guide, and TBA means nothing has been published yet. Lift prices are adult, bought on the day, unless we say otherwise.

1. GALA Yuzawa (Station-direct resort, Niigata)

The Lowdown: GALA has its own seasonal shinkansen station. You leave the ticket gates, rent your gear and ride the gondola up, all in the same building. Slopes open 19 December 2026 to 5 May 2027 (Confirmed). From 12 to 18 December, only the gondola runs, for sightseeing and snow play, with no skiing regardless of how much snow there is.

어디: GALA Yuzawa Station (Joetsu Shinkansen), Yuzawa, Niigata. Only Yeti’s weekday ticket is cheaper in this guide.

2. Karuizawa Prince Snow Resort (Earliest shinkansen ski, Nagano)

The Lowdown: This is the closest real ski resort to Tokyo by train. It opens its East area on 31 October 2026 on man-made snow, and the season runs to 31 March 2027 (Confirmed). The West area is planned for 19 December 2026 to 22 March 2027. Kagura (Long-season powder, Niigata)

The Lowdown: Kagura is the snow-sure choice in the Yuzawa area and has one of the longest seasons near Tokyo. The Kagura and Mitsumata areas run 28 November 2026 to 16 May 2027, and Tashiro runs 19 December 2026 to 5 May 2027 (Confirmed). Naeba (Big resort with night skiing, Niigata)

The Lowdown: Naeba is a large resort built around the Naeba Prince Hotel, with night skiing and the Dragondola gondola across to Kagura. The season runs 18 December 2026 to 4 April 2027 (Confirmed). Night skiing runs to 21 March and the Dragondola from 26 December to 22 March (both planned).

어디: Yuzawa, Niigata, in the mountains above Echigo-Yuzawa. There’s a free shuttle from Echigo-Yuzawa for hotel guests only. Winter express and route bus times hadn’t been announced yet, and a taxi costs about ¥11,000. Snow Town Yeti and Fujiten (Ski on Mt Fuji, Shizuoka and Yamanashi)

The Lowdown: Snow Town Yeti, on Mt Fuji’s southern side, opens on 23 October 2026 (Confirmed). That makes it Japan’s earliest-opening ski area for the 28th year running, and it stays open to 28 March 2027, from 9:00 to 22:00. Fujiten, on the northern side near Lake Kawaguchiko, plans to open in mid-December 2026 and close in early April 2027 (Confirmed; exact opening day TBA).

어디: Yeti is in Susono, Shizuoka. Its liner bus from Shinjuku takes about 2 hours 30 minutes, and the fare includes your lift ticket. Fujikyu route buses also run from JR Gotemba (¥1,570 one way last season) and Mishima (¥1,830). Fujiten is in Narusawa, Yamanashi. Take the highway bus from Busta Shinjuku to Kawaguchiko (about 1 hour 45 minutes, ¥2,200), then the resort shuttle (¥4,000 return last season).
The Vibe: Yeti is for first-timers, practice and night skiing. Minakami: Tanigawadake “Mt.T” (Powder and backcountry, Gunma)

The Lowdown: Tanigawadake Tenjindaira, now branded “Mt.T”, is a ropeway-access powder field. The pistes are 15–38° and the backcountry runs reach 30–50°. The season runs 19 December 2026 to 4 April 2027 (Confirmed). The Spring Pass is ¥6,000 (10 Mar–4 Apr) and the elementary-school pass ¥2,000. Ski or board sets rent for ¥5,000.
