Three days is the right amount of time for Kanazawa, and you don’t need a car for any of it: the main sights sit close together, and city buses link them to the station. This Kanazawa itinerary gives each day one district, Kenrokuen and the castle, then the teahouse quarter and the market, then the samurai lanes and the D.T. Suzuki Museum, with 2026 prices and the closing days that catch people out.

Kanazawa is about 2 hours 30 minutes from Tokyo on the fastest Hokuriku Shinkansen. Late October to March is a good time to go: the snow ropes go up in Kenrokuen from 1 November and snow crab season opens on 6 November. Every price and time below was checked on 23 October 2026.

Is three days enough for a Kanazawa itinerary?

Yes. Two days covers the headline sights, but it means rushing the museums and doing Omicho Market at lunchtime, when it is busiest. A third day gives you the samurai district, a slow morning at the market and time for the 21st Century Museum’s queues.

The bigger trap is Monday. The 21st Century Museum’s exhibition zone, the D.T. Suzuki Museum and the Shinise Kinenkan in Nagamachi close on Mondays, so start this Kanazawa itinerary on a Tuesday to Saturday. Kenrokuen and the castle park open every day of the year.

How do you get around Kanazawa without a car?

By bus and on foot. The station is a 20-minute loop bus ride from the 21st Century Museum and Kenrokuen, so the pattern is one bus in, then walking between neighbouring sights. Every bus in this plan leaves from the stands at the station’s East Exit.

The ¥800 adult price for the 1-day free pass comes from Hoshino Resorts’ Kanazawa bus guide (updated April 2026) and the city transport council’s bus leaflet. Hokuriku Railroad (Hokutetsu) revised its bus fares from 1 February 2026, according to a Kanazawa city press release, and its own website was offline for maintenance when we checked, so confirm single fares on the bus or with Hokutetsu on 076-234-0123.

The bus-and-bike combo is a trial run by Kanazawa city and Hokutetsu from 22 April 2026 to 31 March 2027, sold only in the Norimasshi Kanazawa app or website and paid by credit card (city press release, April 2026). It covers the loop bus, the weekend Kanazawa Shopping Bus and designated city-area buses. It also unlocks the Machi-nori shared bikes for the day.

Getting to Kanazawa by train

From Tokyo, the Hokuriku Shinkansen Kagayaki takes about 2 hours 30 minutes, and a reserved seat costs about ¥14,700 (Ekitan, April 2026). From Kyoto or Osaka you now take the Thunderbird to Tsuruga and change to the Shinkansen there, because the line was extended to Tsuruga in March 2024. If you are weighing a rail pass for this trip, our guide to whether the JR Pass is worth it runs the numbers.

Day 1: Kenrokuen, Kanazawa Castle and the 21st Century Museum

Day one stays in one compact block in the middle of the city. Kenrokuen garden, the castle park and the 21st Century Museum are all next to each other, so after the first bus ride you walk all day.

Early morning: Kenrokuen for free

Kenrokuen opens its Hasunoike and Zuijinzaka gates early, for free, before paid hours. From 1 November to the end of February, early entry runs from 6:00 with last entry at 7:30, and early visitors must leave by 7:45, before paid hours start at 8:00 (Kenrokuen official guide). Take an early taxi or walk if you are staying in the centre; the loop bus starts later.

If you want the full garden at a normal pace, pay instead. Paid hours are 8:00 to 17:00 from 16 October to the end of February and 7:00 to 18:00 from 1 March, and entry costs ¥320 for adults and ¥100 for ages 6 to 17. Visitors aged 65 and over get in free with ID, and the garden is free for everyone on 3 November and from 31 December to 3 January.

Late morning: Kanazawa Castle Park

Cross the Ishikawa Gate bridge into Kanazawa Castle Park, which is free and open every day. The rebuilt Hishi Yagura turret, Gojukken Nagaya storehouse and Hashizume-mon gate tower cost ¥320 and open 9:00 to 16:30 (Kanazawa Castle fees). A combined ticket for Kenrokuen plus one castle building costs ¥500, so buy that if you plan both.

For a sit-down break, Gyokusen-an teahouse in the castle park serves matcha with a sweet for ¥1,000. It closes 12:00 to 13:00 and from 29 December to 3 January.

Afternoon: 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art

Walk on to the 21st Century Museum. Its free public zone opens 9:00 to 22:00, and the paid exhibition zone opens 10:00 to 18:00, or 20:00 on Fridays and Saturdays (museum visitor information). The exhibition zone closes on Mondays, or the next weekday when Monday is a holiday.

The main show this winter is From Today to Tomorrow: On the Stewardship of a Work, from 31 October 2026 to 18 April 2027. Adults pay ¥1,200, or ¥1,000 with a web ticket bought on the official ticket page (exhibition page). On top of the usual Monday closures it shuts on 24 November, 29 December to 1 January, 12 January and 23 March, and opens on the holiday Mondays of 23 November, 11 January and 22 March.

Leandro Erlich’s The Swimming Pool is the piece everyone queues for. You can look down into it from the free zone, but going underneath needs an exhibition ticket plus a same-day numbered slot, taken from 9:00 through the reservation link or the machine by the information desk at the Honda Street entrance (Swimming Pool rules). There are no advance bookings, you get five minutes underneath, and the pool was closed from 19 to 30 October 2026, so check the museum’s news page before you go.

Evening: castle lights

On Saturdays, Kanazawa Castle Park’s Gyokusen-inmaru garden opens at night, from sunset to 21:00, for free; the outer stone walls are lit every night until 22:00 (castle night opening). In November 2026, Kenrokuen and the castle also open for free autumn illuminations from 18:00 to 21:00 (last entry 20:45) on 7, 14, 15, 21, 22, 28 and 29 November (Visit Kanazawa).

Day 2: Omicho Market and Higashi Chaya

Day two is food and old wooden streets. Start at the market, then walk east across the Asanogawa river to the best-preserved teahouse district in the city.

Morning: Omicho Market

Omicho Market has more than 180 stalls and restaurants, between the station and the castle. Hours vary by shop but are roughly 9:00 to 17:00, and each shop sets its own closing days (Ishikawa Travel). Go early, before the lunch crowd, as the seafood-bowl counters are the busiest part of the market.

From 6 November, snow crab is the reason to come. Ishikawa calls the male crab kano-gani and the smaller female kobako-gani, and the fishing season opens on 6 November (Ishikawa Prefecture fisheries report); the prefecture’s landing reports cover November to March. Prices change daily with the catch, so check the board before you sit down.

Afternoon: Higashi Chaya district

Higashi Chaya is a few streets of 19th-century teahouses with wooden lattice fronts, now mostly cafes and craft shops. Shima, a teahouse built in 1820 and a national Important Cultural Property, is open to visitors for ¥500 (¥300 for children), 9:00 to 18:00, or 9:00 to 17:00 from December to February (Jalan listing).

This is also where you buy and try Kanazawa gold leaf. We cover the workshops, prices and booking in our guide to where to buy Japanese crafts, so we won’t repeat them here. Allow an hour if you want to make something.

Come early or late in the day if you want photos without crowds. Late afternoon also works as the end of a market day.

If day two is a Saturday, finish on the Kanazawa Light-up Bus from East Exit stand 7: it runs every 20 minutes from 19:00 and costs ¥300 a ride.

Day 3: Nagamachi and the D.T. Suzuki Museum

The last day is quieter: samurai lanes in the morning, a Zen museum in the afternoon. Both are a short bus ride from the station.

Morning: Nagamachi samurai district

Nagamachi is a small grid of earthen walls, narrow canals and old samurai houses in the centre of the city. The Nomura-ke house and garden is the one to pay for: it opens 8:30 to 17:30 (16:30 from October to March) and has charged ¥550 (Japan Guide, January 2025). The house posted a notice of an admission price revision on 7 October 2026, so check its website for the new price.

Nearby, the Ashigaru Shiryokan, two foot-soldiers’ houses, is free and has no closing days. The Shinise Kinenkan, an old pharmacy, costs ¥100 and closes on Mondays.

Afternoon: D.T. Suzuki Museum

The D.T. Suzuki Museum, at 3-4-20 Hondamachi, is a short bus ride from Nagamachi and is dedicated to the Buddhist thinker who introduced Zen to Western readers. It opens 9:30 to 17:00 (last entry 16:30), costs ¥310, is free for under-18s, and closes on Mondays (Tuesday when Monday is a holiday) and from 29 December to 3 January (Ishikawa Travel; Japan Guide).

There is not much to read. You come for the Water Mirror Garden, a shallow pool you can sit beside for as long as you like, and it makes a calm last stop on three days in Kanazawa.

Finish with an early dinner near the station if you are catching an evening train. The East Exit is where all the buses meet.

What is Kanazawa like in winter 2026–27?

Cold, often wet, sometimes snowy, and quieter than autumn. The trade-off is three things you can only see now. Yukitsuri, the cone-shaped rope supports that hold pine branches up under heavy snow, are put up at Kenrokuen between 1 November and mid-December (Visit Kanazawa).

  • Snow crab: the season opens on 6 November, and Omicho Market is the easiest place in the city to try it.
  • Autumn illuminations: Kenrokuen and the castle open free in the evening on 7, 14, 15, 21, 22, 28 and 29 November 2026.
  • Winter light-ups: dates for any January–February 2027 illumination were not yet announced when we checked.
  • Shorter days: Kenrokuen’s paid hours end at 17:00 until the end of February, so start early.

Bring waterproof shoes. For the wider picture, see our guide to winter in Japan, and for a crab-focused onsen trip, Kinosaki Onsen in crab season.

Did the 2024 Noto earthquake affect Kanazawa?

Kanazawa is open as normal, and every sight in this Kanazawa itinerary was operating when we checked. The 1 January 2024 earthquake hit the Noto Peninsula to the north much harder. In the city, it caused five stone-wall collapses and 23 deformed walls in Kanazawa Castle Park, and two collapses in Kenrokuen, including the Sazaeyama wall (Ishikawa Prefecture).

Repairs are ongoing, with no completion date announced. Since 19 July 2025 you can see the work up close: fallen stones are being surveyed in the Ihori-bori area, and a visitor route there lets you watch the Honmaru south wall being restored.

The 21st Century Museum’s free Noto Series exhibition, with Hitoshi Ushijima and Hiraki Sawa, runs from 8 September 2026 to 18 April 2027 (museum website). It costs nothing and fits into Day 1.

How much does a 3-day Kanazawa itinerary cost?

Sights and transport are cheap in Kanazawa. The table covers one adult for this plan, excluding food, hotels and the train there.

Two cross-trip savings most guides miss: the 21st Century Museum is part of the free Museum Link Pass with Tokyo’s Mori Art Museum and Benesse Art Site Naoshima, which gives a discount at the second museum you visit (Benesse Art Site). And Kenrokuen and Kanazawa Castle sell tickets online through the official Asoview pages, which saves queuing at the gate. If Naoshima is on your route, our art exhibitions guide lists the shows on now.
