Yes, the free shinkansen tickets for tourists in Kagoshima are real. Until 28 February 2027 (or until the money runs out), Kagoshima Prefecture will cover the one-way Kyushu Shinkansen fare from Hakata to Kagoshima, worth up to ¥11,420, if you live in one of eight markets, fly into Fukuoka Airport and book at least one night at a Kagoshima hotel through Klook.

That is the whole deal, and it is narrower than the headlines suggest. Below we cover exactly who qualifies (it is about where you live, not your passport), how the claim works, what it is actually worth against a JR Kyushu Rail Pass, how it sits next to the new 60% Kyushu recovery discount, and a 4-day Hakata-to-Kagoshima plan to make the free leg count. Japan Pro does not sell this ticket; this is a neutral explainer built on the prefecture’s own announcement.

Quick answer: Kagoshima free shinkansen at a glance (checked 17 October 2026)

  • What you get: one one-way Kyushu Shinkansen ride per guest on your hotel booking, Hakata → Kagoshima, worth up to ¥11,420 (the standard unreserved fare).
  • Who: residents of the US, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, South Korea, mainland China, Taiwan and Hong Kong.
  • Conditions: enter Japan via Fukuoka Airport + book 1 night or more at a participating Kagoshima Prefecture hotel via Klook’s Kagoshima campaign page, at least 3 days before check-in.
  • 언제: 18 September 2026 – 28 February 2027, ends early if the budget (about ¥278 million) is used up.
  • Not included: the return trip, Tokyo/Osaka–Hakata legs, anyone living in Japan or outside the eight markets.
  • Official pages: Kagoshima Prefecture announcement (Japanese) · Klook campaign page

What is the Kagoshima free shinkansen campaign?

It is a prefecture-funded promotion officially called the “Inbound Visitor Attraction Promotion Special Project” (インバウンド誘客促進特別事業), run with travel platform Klook. According to Kagoshima Prefecture’s announcement (updated 18 September 2026), the prefecture provides “an amount equivalent to a one-way shinkansen fare from Hakata to Kagoshima”. Klook’s press release puts the value at up to ¥11,420.

Why is a prefecture paying for your train? Fukuoka gets the flights; Kagoshima, about 290 km further south, often gets skipped. The campaign launched on the same day the Kyushu Shinkansen fully reopened after the July 2026 Kumamoto earthquake, so it doubles as a recovery push for southern Kyushu. Japanese media reported the budget at about ¥278 million in the prefecture’s FY2026 plans, which also drew some domestic criticism, so do not expect it to be extended indefinitely.

Who qualifies for the free shinkansen tickets?

All three conditions must be true:

  1. You live in one of eight markets: United States, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, South Korea, mainland China, Taiwan or Hong Kong. The prefecture’s wording is “residing in” (在住) each market, so this is about residence, not nationality. A British passport holder living in Singapore should qualify on that wording; an American living in Tokyo should not.
  2. You enter Japan via Fukuoka Airport. Arriving at Haneda, Narita or Kansai and taking the train down does not meet the condition as published.
  3. You book at least one night at a Kagoshima Prefecture hotel through Klook’s Kagoshima campaign page. Only participating properties count; on Klook they carry a “Receive Free Shinkansen Ticket” label. Klook’s terms also require the booking to be made at least 3 days before check-in.

Not on the list? UK, EU, Australian, Canadian, Indian and Philippine residents (among others) are not eligible. Skip to “Not eligible?” below for the alternatives.

How to claim the free Hakata–Kagoshima shinkansen ticket

The prefecture does not publish the claim mechanics; Klook runs them. According to Klook’s campaign page and its terms (checked 17 October 2026), the steps are:

  1. Open the Klook Kagoshima campaign page and redeem the promo code (GETFREESHINKANSENTICKET when we checked).
  2. Choose a Kagoshima Prefecture hotel showing the “Receive Free Shinkansen Ticket” promotion.
  3. Enter the code at checkout and pay for at least one night, at least 3 days before check-in. Select the exact number of guests: tickets are issued per guest on the booking.
  4. Complete the short survey Klook sends after booking.
  5. Receive your free shinkansen ticket code, which Klook sends 30 days before your hotel check-in date, and use it to book your one-way Hakata → Kagoshima ride.

What Klook’s terms say: you get one free one-way ticket per guest, based on the number of guests in the hotel booking. The coupon is tied to a non-cancellable hotel booking; if you cancel, change or refund the hotel, the shinkansen ticket is voided, and Klook can charge you the full fare for a ticket already issued. The promotion cannot be combined with other promotional programmes unless stated, and tickets are first come, first served.

What we could not confirm: how long the ticket code stays valid, and how residence or your Fukuoka arrival is checked. Read the terms on the campaign page before you pay, and screenshot them. We will update this guide if the official terms change.

Japan Pro tip: Book the hotel first, then plan the train. The code is tied to a non-cancellable hotel booking that must be made at least 3 days before check-in, and the campaign ends when the budget does, not on a fixed sales date. If you are travelling in January or February 2027, claim now rather than later.

How much are the free shinkansen tickets really worth?

The Hakata–Kagoshima-Chuo one-way fare with an unreserved seat is ¥11,420, which is exactly the campaign cap. A reserved seat costs ¥11,950, so do not assume the code covers a reserved seat or Green Car upgrade.

Service status: The Kyushu Shinkansen reopened along its full length on 18 September 2026 after a 52-day suspension caused by the Kumamoto earthquake. Trains run slower near Shin-Yatsushiro while bridge repairs continue, hence the extra minutes.

Kyushu Rail Pass vs the free ticket: which is better?

Short version: if you are only going Hakata ↔︎ Kagoshima, the free ticket wins. If you want Kumamoto, Nagasaki, Yufuin or lots of side trips, an All Kyushu Rail Pass can still beat it.

JR Kyushu Rail Pass (adult)Online booking priceStation / agency priceKyushu Shinkansen covered

Northern Kyushu, 3 / 5 days¥14,000 / ¥16,000¥15,000 / ¥17,000Hakata – Kumamoto only
Southern Kyushu, 3 days¥11,000¥12,000Kumamoto – Kagoshima-Chuo only

Prices from JR Kyushu’s official Rail Pass pages (online booking prices are marked “limited-time”). Children 6–11 pay half. The pass is for non-Japanese passport holders visiting on “temporary visitor” status; residents of Japan cannot use it.

The maths: with the campaign, a simple Hakata → Kagoshima → Hakata trip costs you about ¥11,420 in shinkansen fares (you pay the return leg only). The cheapest All Kyushu pass is ¥21,000. The pass only pays off if you add roughly ¥10,000 of extra JR travel within its validity, for example a Kumamoto stop plus the Ibusuki train. Note that the pass is consecutive-day, and the free ticket only covers the southbound leg; you cannot combine them usefully on the same journey.

Can you combine it with the 60% Kyushu recovery discount?

Possibly, but nobody official has said so yet. Here is what is confirmed.

더 Kyushu Fukko Ouenwari (九州ふっこう応援割) is a national recovery discount for travel in the seven Kyushu prefectures after the July 2026 Kumamoto earthquake, announced by the Japan Tourism Agency. Stays from 1 October 2026 are eligible, with 60% off in Kumamoto and Kagoshima and 50% elsewhere.

The catch: the official list of booking sites for the Kagoshima discount is Japanese platforms (Jalan, Rakuten Travel, Yahoo! Travel, Ikyu, JAL, ANA and others) plus participating hotels booked direct. Klook was not on it when we checked. The free shinkansen requires a Klook booking. So you probably cannot get both on the same night. The FAQ does not address stacking with the Klook campaign, and Klook’s own terms say its promotion cannot be combined with other promotional programmes unless stated. If it matters, ask the Fukko Ouenwari call centre (050-1732-4661, 9:00–17:00 daily except 29 December–3 January, Japanese).

Workaround to ask about: book one night via Klook to unlock the train, and further nights direct with a participating hotel under the 60% discount. We have not been able to confirm that this is permitted, so treat it as a question, not a hack. Heading through Kumamoto too? Its own 60% discount covers stays to 25 December 2026 and ends as each booking site’s allocation runs out; see our Kumamoto travel 2026 guide for what has reopened.

Not eligible? Your best alternatives

  • JR Kyushu Rail Pass: the best value if you are moving around Kyushu for 3+ days (prices above).
  • Kyushu Fukko Ouenwari: open to foreign travellers regardless of where they live, and worth far more than ¥11,420 on a multi-night stay. Book via the official Kagoshima site.
  • Fly direct to Kagoshima: if you are not starting in Fukuoka anyway, a domestic flight can beat two shinkansen legs. Compare before you commit.
  • Kagoshima Sightseeing Pass: Klook announced an exclusive two-day unlimited-ride pass developed with JR Kyushu (Travel Voice). No price was published when we checked.

Things to do in Kagoshima once you get there

The free ride gets you to Kagoshima-Chuo. Here is what to do with the hotel nights you booked to get it. JNTO’s Kagoshima destination page is a solid overview; below is the practical layer.

Sakurajima: the volcano across the bay

더 Sakurajima Ferry runs from Kagoshima Port, takes about 15 minutes and costs ¥250 for adults (¥130 children); it takes IC cards and credit cards. It is no longer a 24-hour service: since 1 October 2025 there are no sailings between midnight and the 3 a.m. hour.

Safety: Sakurajima is at Eruption Alert Level 3 (do not approach the volcano), with a restricted zone of about 2 km around the Minamidake and Showa craters, per the Japan Meteorological Agency bulletin of 16 October 2026. Observatories and the coastal road outside the zone remain open. Ash falls on the city when the wind is southerly or easterly; carry a mask and lens cloth.

Sengan-en: the Shimadzu family garden

A former lord’s villa with Sakurajima as its “borrowed” backdrop. Entry is ¥1,600 for adults and includes the Goten residence and the Shoko Shuseikan museum; open 9:00–17:00 (last entry 16:30), every day except the first Sunday of March (official info). An English guided tour runs at 12:00 on Wednesdays and Sundays for ¥800 (details).

Ibusuki: the sand bath

At Saraku, staff bury you in naturally heated sand on the beach. The basic sand bath set is ¥1,500 for adults (¥800 children); open 8:30–21:00, last entry 20:00. On weekdays sand-bath reception pauses 12:00–13:00, and the facility closes for maintenance 14–18 December 2026. Get there on the Ibusuki no Tamatebako limited express from Kagoshima-Chuo: about 51–53 minutes, all seats reserved, three round trips a day. Book seats early; it fills up.

Getting around the city: the CUTE pass

더 CUTE pass gives unlimited rides on city buses, trams, the Kagoshima City View sightseeing bus, the Sakurajima Island View bus and the Sakurajima Ferry. One day is ¥1,400, two days ¥2,100 (adults). Buy it as a digital ticket in the “my route” app; it cannot be refunded.

Eat and drink: kurobuta and shochu

Kagoshima is Japan’s black pork (kurobuta) heartland and the home of imo (sweet potato) shochu. Order kurobuta shabu-shabu or tonkatsu in Tenmonkan, the downtown nightlife area, and ask for shochu oyuwari (cut with hot water), the way locals drink it. Most Tenmonkan menus are Japanese-only; a translation app does the job.

Are free shinkansen tickets worth it? Our honest take

For residents of the eight markets who were flying into Fukuoka anyway, this is free money: one night in Kagoshima unlocks a ¥11,420 ride, and Kagoshima deserves more than one night. For everyone else, it is not a reason to reroute your flights. The real deal for most travellers this winter is the 60% Fukko Ouenwari discount, which applies to foreign visitors whatever their residence. Japan has just been voted “Favourite Country for a Holiday” for the second year running in the UK’s Ultratravel ULTRAs (JNTO, 9 October 2026); southern Kyushu is where you can still find it without the crowds.

Residents of the United States, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, South Korea, mainland China, Taiwan and Hong Kong. Eligibility is based on where you live, per the prefecture’s wording.

When does the free shinkansen campaign end?

28 February 2027, or earlier if the budget runs out. It started on 18 September 2026.

Is the return trip from Kagoshima to Hakata free?

No. Only one one-way ride per guest, Hakata → Kagoshima, is covered. The return costs ¥11,420 with an unreserved seat.

Can I use it if I arrive at Tokyo or Osaka?

Not as published. Entry via Fukuoka Airport is one of the three conditions.

Is the Kyushu Rail Pass better than the free ticket?

Only if you travel widely. A simple Hakata–Kagoshima round trip costs about ¥11,420 with the free ticket; the cheapest All Kyushu pass is ¥21,000 (online price).
