See our Ghibli Park tickets guide for that.

No Ghibli tickets? Do this instead

Ride a boat instead of the zoo, then go to the Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum in Koganei Park, a few stops west on the Chuo Line plus a bus; our guide has the access details.

17:30 – Harmonica Yokocho and Kichijoji after dark

Harmonica Yokocho is a grid of narrow alleys right by the north exit, packed with tiny bars, standing counters and food stalls. It grew out of the post-war market around the station, and the name comes from the rows of narrow units that look like the holes of a harmonica.

Go from about 17:00, when the after-work crowd arrives. Most places seat only a handful of people, so walk the alleys once, then pick somewhere with space. Some bars add a small seating charge, so ask before you order.

Iseya: old-school yakitori

South of the station, toward the park, Iseya is the area’s long-running yakitori house: smoky, cheap, loud and very popular. It does not take reservations, so arrive early or be ready to wait.

Iseya, the old-school yakitori house near Inokashira Park.

How much does a day in Kichijoji cost?

A full Kichijoji day is cheap by Tokyo standards, because the park and streets are free. Here is the route above, priced for one adult from Shinjuku with an IC card, at October 2026 prices.

Item

Cost

Return train from Shinjuku (IC)

¥506

Rowboat, 30 min (split between 2)

¥400 each

Inokashira Park Zoo

¥400

Satou menchi-katsu x 2

¥700

Ghibli Museum

¥1,000

Total before dinner and drinks

About ¥3,000

Dinner and a couple of drinks in Harmonica Yokocho or at Iseya is the variable part. Set aside what you would spend on a casual izakaya night anywhere in Tokyo.

Kichijoji with kids: what works

Zoo first: under-13s go free, and the Aquatic Life Park by the pond is small enough for short attention spans.

Boats: the swan and cycle boats take two adults plus one child; the rowboat takes up to three adults.

Ghibli Museum: children 4–6 pay ¥100 and under-4s are free with no booking needed, but older children need their own timed ticket.

Food: a menchi-katsu is easy to eat on the move, and the steakhouse upstairs serves rice refills at lunch.

Push the Ghibli slot to the afternoon if your children nap: the park is the better place to burn energy in the morning.

What to do in Kichijoji when it rains

Rain changes the order, not the plan. Sun Road and Diamond Gai are covered arcades, and the Ghibli Museum is mostly indoors, although its roof garden may close in bad weather.

Skip the boats and the outdoor zoo area, and use the Aquatic Life Park for a shorter animal stop. Then finish as planned with drinks in Harmonica Yokocho; you are only ever a short walk from the station.

Why is Kichijoji called Tokyo’s most liveable suburb?

Because it does everything a neighbourhood should, in one walkable circle. You get a large park, a department-store-level shopping centre, independent shops and a nightlife alley, with fast trains to both Shinjuku and Shibuya. Japanese surveys of where people want to live regularly put it near the top.

For visitors, that means Kichijoji shows you ordinary, well-off Tokyo life rather than tourist Tokyo. If you liked it, try Shimokitazawa and Koenji, which sit on the same lines but have a scruffier, vintage-clothing feel.

When is the best time to visit Kichijoji?

Cherry blossom (late March – early April): Inokashira Park is one of Tokyo’s best-known hanami spots and gets very crowded.

Autumn colour (usually late November – early December): the pond is ringed with trees; check our Tokyo autumn leaves 2026 forecast.

Weekdays: boats, Satou and Harmonica Yokocho are all calmer.
