Nakano Broadway is a shopping complex about five minutes on foot from the north exit of Nakano Station (JR and Tokyo Metro Tozai lines), with around 300 shops inside, according to the 公式サイト.

The draw is Mandarake, which runs a cluster of specialist counters across floors 1 to 4: manga, figures, animation cels, doujinshi, retro games and toys. Its Nakano store page lists 12:00–20:00, open every day, with buy-in counters closing at 19:30.

Come after noon. Many of the small independent shops open late too, so a 10am visit means locked shutters. If you like Nakano, Koenji is one stop away for second-hand clothes and live houses.

What is on Otome Road and in Sunshine City, Ikebukuro?

Otome Road is the stretch of Higashi-Ikebukuro beside Sunshine City where shops lean towards female fans: character goods, otome games, idol anime and boys’ love titles. It is busy on weekends and around big releases.

Animate Ikebukuro

Animate’s flagship stands at 1-20-7 Higashi-Ikebukuro. The official store page gives hours of 10:00–21:00 and confirms tax-free service. From 1 November 2026 Japan switches to a refund system: you pay the tax in store on purchases of ¥5,000 or more (before tax, per shop, per day) and get it back after customs checks your goods when you leave (Japan Tourism Agency; see our Japan tax refund guide). Expect floor after floor of new manga, light novels, character goods and daily signing or pop-up events.

Pokémon Center Mega Tokyo

The Pokémon Center Mega Tokyo is on the 2nd floor of the Alpa shopping mall in Sunshine City, open 10:00–20:00 every day except facility closure days. Go on a weekday morning to avoid queues for new releases.

What happened to J-World Tokyo?

It is gone. The Shonen Jump indoor theme park on the 3rd floor of Sunshine City’s World Import Mart closed on 17 February 2019, as Anime News Network reported. Many older blogs still list it, so ignore them.

How do you get Ghibli Museum tickets in 2026?

Every visit to the Ghibli Museum in Mitaka needs a timed ticket bought in advance; there are no tickets at the door. Lawson Ticket releases the next month’s tickets at 10:00 Japan time on the 10th of each month, and from overseas JTB sells them on the 1st of the month for entry three months later (official ticket page).

One change for 2026: from November 2026 entries, Lawson Ticket adds a system fee of ¥110 per ticket and shows e-tickets through MOALA Ticket, according to the Lawson Ghibli page. December tickets therefore go on sale on 10 November.

Ticket

Price (tax incl.)

Adults and university students (19+)

¥1,000

Ages 13–18

¥700

Ages 7–12

¥400

Ages 4–6

¥100

Under 4

無料

The museum is open 10:00–18:00 and closed on Tuesdays, with occasional long closures. The official venue page gives hours of 11:00–19:00, open all year except year-end holidays, inspections and changeover days.

Entry to the floor is free, and paid tickets apply only to some exhibitions. In autumn 2026 the programme includes the Angelique 30th anniversary museum (2 October–8 November) and the Ensemble Stars! THE STAGE 10th anniversary costume exhibition (28 November–27 December), plus short pop-up shops that change every few weeks.

Is the Gundam statue still in Odaiba?

No. The life-size Unicorn Gundam outside DiverCity Tokyo Plaza ended its display on 31 August 2026 after about nine years, as GameBusiness.jp reported. No replacement statue had been announced when we checked.

The Gundam Base Tokyo, the official Gunpla flagship, is still on the 7th floor of DiverCity Tokyo Plaza, open 10:00–21:00 in line with the mall (公式サイト). Two new branches are coming: The Gundam Base Shibuya on the 5th floor of Shibuya PARCO, opening on Friday 20 November 2026 (announcement) and The Gundam Base Osaka in February 2027.

Limited kits sell out fast at all branches. Check the store news page for purchase limits and numbered-ticket days before you go.

How much is Sanrio Puroland in 2026?

Sanrio Puroland is an indoor Hello Kitty theme park in Tama New Town, western Tokyo. Advance passports on Lawson Ticket start at ¥3,700 for adults (18–64) and ¥2,600 for children aged 3–17 and seniors; under-3s are free.

Prices change by date and you need a reservation for a specific day. Lawson does not sell same-day passports or allow refunds, and the park closes on irregular days, so check the official calendar before you book.

Is Tokorozawa Sakura Town worth the trip from Tokyo?

If you like manga history or architecture, yes, and it is the easiest of the anime spots near Tokyo to combine with a Haneda arrival. Kadokawa’s culture complex in Tokorozawa, Saitama, is about a 10-minute walk from Higashi-Tokorozawa Station, and a direct airport bus from Haneda costs ¥2,000 (access page).

The centrepiece is the Kadokawa Culture Museum, a rock-like building with the floor-to-ceiling Bookshelf Theater. Its 公式サイト lists 10:00–18:00 and Tuesday closures in October 2026. Current shows include Galaxy Express 999: The Galaxy Experience (extended to 23 November 2026) and an essay manga exhibition to 11 January 2027.

Next door, Musashino Reiwa Shrine was designed under Kengo Kuma, with a ceiling painting by Final Fantasy artist Yoshitaka Amano. From October to March it is open 10:00–16:30 (17:00 at weekends and holidays) and closed on Tuesdays (shrine page).

Kadokawa Culture Museum, Tokorozawa. It is a residential street, a short walk from Yotsuya and Yotsuya-sanchome stations. Shoot quickly, keep the steps clear and keep your voice down; people use them to get home.

Other Your Name locations nearby include Yotsuya Station and the Shinanomachi footbridge. Our Shinjuku guide covers the rest of the area.

The Slam Dunk crossing (Kamakurakokomae, Kanagawa)

The level crossing by Kamakurakokomae Station on the Enoden line, with the sea behind it, is famous from the opening of Slam Dunk. Crowds stepping into the road led Kamakura city to trial a fenced photo area in the park beside the crossing in September 2025, when about 7,500 people came over one three-day weekend (Kanagawa Shimbun).

From 1 October 2025 the city raised the number of guards at the crossing from two to seven, then kept five on duty, telling visitors to take photos from the park, not the road (Kanagawa Shimbun). There is no general photo ban, but guards will move you on.

Take photos from the designated park area, never from the road or the crossing itself.

Do not stop on the crossing or block the narrow pavement.

Do not enter private land, gardens or the school grounds.

Do not park or have a car or taxi wait at the crossing.

Go early on a weekday; weekends and Chinese and Korean holiday periods are busiest.

Beyond Tokyo: Den Den Town and Kyoto Animation country

Den Den Town, Osaka

Osaka’s answer to Akihabara is Nipponbashi Den Den Town, a strip of more than 150 shops for manga, anime, figures, card games and electronics running about 1 km south from Namba. It is next to Ebisucho Station and about five minutes on foot from Namba (Osaka Info).
