Umeda Osaka is the city’s northern hub around JR Osaka Station, and the best way to see it is in three layers: the views above, the new park and old lanes at street level, and the food halls and malls underground. Plan half a day for the highlights and an evening for the bars; everything in this guide is within about ten minutes’ walk of the station.

The hard part is not deciding what to see. It is working out which of seven stations you are in, and which of the tunnels below them leads where. So this guide starts with the stations, then goes up, across and down.

JR Osaka or Umeda: which station do you need?

Both, usually. “Osaka” is the JR station; “Umeda” is everyone else’s name for the same district. Hankyu and Hanshin call their terminals Osaka-umeda, and three subway lines each have their own station a few minutes apart.

StationLinesUse it for
JR OsakaJR Kyoto, Kobe, Osaka Loop and other JR linesShin-Osaka, Kyoto and Kobe by JR, the Loop Line

The Umekita platform details are from the Osaka Station entry on Wikipedia, citing JR West. If you are heading to Kyoto, Hankyu from Osaka-umeda drops you in the middle of town; see our Gion-Shijo station guide for that end. For the airport, our Kansai Airport to Kyoto guide compares the Haruka with the alternatives.

How do you not get lost in Umeda?

  • Pick the exit by building, not by station. Signs underground name department stores and towers, and those are easier to follow than line colours.
  • Use JR Osaka’s Midosuji exit as your base on the east side of Umeda Osaka; HEP Five is about four minutes’ walk from it.
  • Meet at Izumi no Hiroba (“fountain square”) in Whity Umeda if you are splitting up. It is the mall’s main meeting point.
  • Map apps lose GPS below ground. Screenshot your route before you go down, or surface and re-orient.

Up: what are the best views in Umeda Osaka?

Umeda Sky Building Floating Garden Observatory

The rooftop of the Umeda Sky Building is an open-air ring 173 m above the ground, joining the two towers. You buy tickets on the 39th floor, there is an indoor deck and café on 40, and the open roof is above that. The glass-tube escalator from the 35th floor up to the 39th is half the fun.

Ticket (2026)Price
Adult¥2,000
Children 4–12¥500
Under 4Free
Adult with disability certificate¥1,000
Groups of 10+, adult¥1,800

Hours are 9:30–22:30 with last entry at 22:00, and there are no regular closing days, although some special days need a special ticket. The rooftop may close in heavy rain, and the 39th-floor counter takes cash and credit cards. Prices are from the Umeda Sky Building site and hours from Osaka’s official tourism site.

  • It is about seven minutes on foot from JR Osaka and nine from Hankyu Osaka-umeda or the Midosuji Line.
  • The Osaka Amazing Pass gets you in free from 9:30 to 15:00 and 20% off afterwards, according to the building’s site.
  • Want to leave a love lock? You need an advance web ticket that includes one.
  • Sunset is the busiest slot. On a clear weekday, going an hour after dark is calmer and the city lights are just as good.

HEP Five ferris wheel

The red ferris wheel on top of the HEP Five shopping building is Umeda’s other viewpoint. You board on the 7th floor, a ride takes about 15 minutes, and the top of the 75 m wheel reaches 106 m above the street. It runs 11:00–23:00, with last boarding at 22:45, and costs ¥1,000; it closes on irregular days.

These details are from Osaka’s official tourism site. It is a three-minute walk from Hankyu Osaka-umeda and four from JR Osaka’s Midosuji exit. Choose the wheel over the Sky Building if you want something short and cheap at night; choose the Sky Building for the open-air view.

Across: what is Grand Green Osaka, and is it finished?

Grand Green Osaka is the huge redevelopment on the old rail yards right next to JR Osaka Station, built around Umekita Park. Not yet: it opened in stages from 6 September 2024, the South Building opened on 21 March 2025, and the full project is due to finish in the 2027 financial year.

DateWhat opens
6 September 2024First phase, including the South Park of Umekita Park
21 March 2025South Building, with Time Out Market Osaka and the Umekita Onsen Hasu spa
20 November 2026Umekita no Mori, a 0.9 ha woodland in the North Park with a 10 m-wide waterfall
Spring 2027The last part of Umekita Park; the park fully opens
FY2027Full opening of Grand Green Osaka

The timeline is from the developers’ April 2026 release e Travel Watch. Umekita Park covers about 45,000 m² in total. The developers had not published opening hours for Umekita no Mori at the time of writing.

Time Out Market Osaka

The easiest place to eat in Grand Green. Time Out Market Osaka is a food hall on the B1 floor of the South Building, open 11:00–23:00 every day, with last food orders at 22:00 and last drinks at 22:30, according to Time Out. It is a good fallback when the Umeda depachika are packed.

Pair Grand Green with the Sky Building in one walk. Both sit on the north-west side of the station, so you can see the park in daylight and go up the tower for dusk.

Where should you eat at street level in Umeda Osaka?

Shin-Umeda Shokudogai

Shin-Umeda Shokudogai is a warren of small restaurants and standing bars squeezed under the JR tracks. It opened on 15 December 1950 with 18 restaurants and now packs in more than 100 bars and restaurants, according to Japan Nakama.

It is the most Umeda Osaka place for a quick beer and a plate of something fried after work. Many counters are standing only and seat a handful of people. Go early in the evening, order one or two things, and move on; that is how locals use it.

Ohatsu Tenjin and Ura-Tenjin

Ohatsu Tenjin, officially Tsuyu no Tenjinsha, is the guardian shrine of Umeda and Sonezaki. It takes its nickname from Ohatsu, the courtesan whose double suicide with a young clerk, Tokubei, in the shrine’s grove in 1703 became Chikamatsu Monzaemon’s puppet play “The Love Suicides at Sonezaki”. A bronze statue of the couple stands in the grounds.

  • The grounds are open 6:00–24:00, and the shrine office 9:00–18:00.
  • A flea market is held on the first Friday and third Sunday of each month: in late 2026 that means 6 and 15 November and 4 and 20 December.
  • Autumn 2026 limited-edition goshuin (shrine stamps) are on offer.
  • Higashi-Umeda subway station is the closest. The shrine is at 2-5-4 Sonezaki, at the end of the Ohatsu Tenjin shopping street.

Shrine details are from the official Tsuyu no Tenjinsha site. Behind the shrine, the Ohatsu Tenjin Urasando lane (“back approach”) opened on 20 March 2015 with 12 restaurants and had grown to 21 by 2020, according to Walkerplus. Expect casual bars and street-food counters, mostly open in the evening. Line-ups change often, so treat it as a lane to wander rather than a list to tick off.

Down: Umeda depachika, Whity and Diamor

Underground is where Umeda Osaka really works. The department store food halls, two big malls and the passages between them let you walk most of the district without crossing a road.

Hankyu and Hanshin depachika

Hankyu Umeda Main Store is open 10:00–20:00 every day, with restaurants on the 12th and 13th floors open 11:00–22:00, according to Hankyu. Its food floors are the place for boxed sweets and gifts to take home.

Across the road, Hanshin Umeda Main Store is the down-to-earth one. Its B1 Snack Park, a standing-only food corner first opened in 1978, came back in 2018 after the store was rebuilt. Its famous ikayaki, a squid pancake, sometimes sells up to 10,000 a day, Daily Sports reported in July 2026.

For how depachika work and the tourist discounts, see our department stores guide, which also covers Hankyu Umeda and Grand Front Osaka as shopping stops.

Whity Umeda

Whity Umeda is the underground mall on the east side, under the Higashi-Umeda area. Shops open 10:00–21:00, cafés and restaurants 10:00–22:00, and the NOMOKA drinking zone 11:00–23:00. It has free Wi-Fi and tax-free shops, and Izumi no Hiroba is its main meeting point. Hours are from Whity Umeda.

Diamor Osaka

Diamor Osaka is the underground mall on the south side, joined to JR Osaka, JR Kitashinchi, Hanshin Osaka-umeda and the Midosuji Line. Shops open 10:00–20:00 and restaurants 11:00–22:00, with some opening at 7:00 for breakfast. It is closed on Wednesday 11 November 2026, according to Diamor, which has an English site and free Wi-Fi.

How do you plan half a day in Umeda Osaka?

Here is a simple route that keeps you moving in one direction and saves the views for after dark.

What is Umeda like in late autumn and winter 2026–27?

The big news is Umekita no Mori, which opens on Friday 20 November 2026 and brings Grand Green Osaka to about 90% complete. The rest of Umekita Park follows in spring 2027, and the developers have not yet announced a precise date.

Diamor closes for a day on 11 November 2026, and Ohatsu Tenjin’s flea market falls on 6 and 15 November and 4 and 20 December. Most of Umeda is indoors or underground, so it is one of the best rainy-day areas in the city; just remember the Sky Building’s rooftop can close in heavy rain.

Know before you go

Learn three names

JR Osaka, Hankyu Osaka-umeda and Metro Umeda cover most trips. Higashi-Umeda and Nishi-Umeda are separate subway stations.

Haruka is downstairs

Airport trains leave from the Umekita underground platforms, not the main concourse. Allow extra time to walk there.

Sky Building at dusk

Last entry is 22:00. A clear evening after sunset is calmer than the sunset rush.

Go under the roads

Whity and Diamor link most of Umeda underground. Screenshot your route because GPS drops out.

Eat standing

Hanshin's Snack Park and many Shin-Umeda Shokudogai counters are standing only. Order, eat and give up your spot.

Check Grand Green dates

Umekita no Mori opens 20 Nov 2026; the full park opens in spring 2027.
