Clearest months (~60% of days)

A Mt Fuji day tour from Tokyo costs from about US$30–50 per person on a shared coach to the Lake Kawaguchiko photo spots (listed prices at time of writing, Oct 2026). Fuji 5th Station and Hakone tours that come back by bullet train start from about US$150–160, and private tours from about US$250–460 per group. Most leave Shinjuku or Tokyo Station between 7:20 and 8:00am and take 10–11 hours. Most GetYourGuide and Viator listings let you cancel free up to 24 hours before.

The catch: no tour can promise you’ll see the mountain. Below we compare the five tour types sold most on Klook, Viator and GetYourGuide. We also give you 33 years of official visibility data by month, the cancellation small print, and the DIY train and bus fares if you’d rather go it alone.

Mt Fuji day tours compared

1. Kawaguchiko & Chureito Pagoda photo-spot tour (Group coach)

The Lowdown: The biggest seller by far. Klook’s “Instagram-Worthy Spots” tour has 35,000+ reviews and 300,000+ bookings. You get about two hours on the coach each way and five or six short photo stops on the north side of Fuji: Arakurayama Sengen Park (Chureito Pagoda), the Hikawa Clock Shop street view, Oshino Hakkai’s spring ponds, Oishi Park on Lake Kawaguchi and the “Fuji Lawson”.

Where: Departs Tokyo Station or Shinjuku Station. The exact spot and guide details arrive by email the evening before (Klook says 20:00–21:00; JRT Group says before 19:00).

The Vibe: Fast, busy, very photogenic. Big coaches, a lot of people, and short stops (20–70 minutes each on JRT Group’s GetYourGuide version).

Price: From about US$47 on Klook and about US$49 for JRT Group’s 10-hour tour on GetYourGuide at time of writing (Oct 2026). Stop entry is free, and lunch is at your own cost.

💡 Japan Pro Tip: Klook’s listing doesn’t show a cancellation policy and says no refunds or changes on the day. If you want a safety net, the JRT Group version on GetYourGuide has free cancellation up to 24 hours before.

2. Kawaguchiko highlights + Fuji 5th Station (Group coach)

The Lowdown: Same lake circuit, plus a 40-minute stop at the Fuji Subaru Line 5th Station, about 2,300m up the mountain. Goryo Travel’s “Full-Day Highlights” trip on GetYourGuide is a typical example: Oishi Park (30 min), Chureito (75 min), Oshino Hakkai (80 min), then the 5th Station.

Where: Two pickups, Shinjuku and Tokyo Station. Exact times are shown when you check availability.

The Vibe: Less selfie, more mountain. At the 5th Station you’re standing on Fuji itself, with souvenir shops and Komitake Shrine.

Price: From about US$64 at time of writing (Oct 2026), shown as a discount off US$80. Entry fees are included; meals are not.

Official Link: GetYourGuide – Mount Fuji Full-Day Highlights

💡 Japan Pro Tip: The 5th Station stop is seasonal. In the off-season this tour swaps it for the Mt. Fuji Museum, so from late autumn to spring, assume you won’t go up. No luggage is allowed, only one hand-carry bag, and the operator warns that the return can run 2–3 hours late.

3. Fuji 5th Station + Hakone with bullet train return (Classic coach)

The Lowdown: The long-running “classic” from Japan Panoramic Tours. It’s the one sold on Viator as “Mt Fuji and Hakone 1-Day Bus Tour Return by Bullet Train”, with 32,000+ reviews averaging 4.8. You go to the 5th Station first, then Hakone for the Hakone Ropeway and a Lake Ashi cruise. Then you take the Shinkansen from Odawara to Tokyo Station, about 30–40 minutes.

Where: Matsuya Ginza at 7:20am or the LOVE sculpture in Shinjuku at 7:50am. On weekends and public holidays it leaves from Shinjuku only, at 7:30am. You finish at Tokyo Station at around 6pm.

The Vibe: Polished and well drilled. English-speaking guide, Wi-Fi on the coach, audio headsets in six more languages.

Price: From about US$150–160 at time of writing (Oct 2026): around US$159 on Viator, US$152 on GetYourGuide. The ropeway, cruise and bullet train ticket are included, and a buffet lunch is optional.

Official Link: Viator – Mt Fuji and Hakone 1-Day Bus Tour Return by Bullet Train

💡 Japan Pro Tip: If snow or weather stops the coach beyond the 4th Station, you get a substitute stop (Oshino Hakkai or similar), not a refund. Already have a JR Pass? The operator tells you to book the “Return by Bus” version instead.

4. Hakone-focused bus tour (Group coach, budget)

The Lowdown: For people who want Fuji in the background rather than as the main event. TAIHOU’s GetYourGuide tour covers Hakone Shrine’s lakeside torii, a Hakone Ropeway ride, a guided 50 minutes at Owakudani’s volcanic valley, Lake Yamanaka and Oshino Hakkai.

Where: JR Tokyo Station at 7:30am (by the “BEAMS” sign; the listing says to search “STAND T”) or Shinjuku at 8:00am (search “Tokyo Mode Gakuen”). Staff wear yellow vests.

The Vibe: More variety, more walking, a bit less Fuji-by-numbers.

Price: From about US$55 per person at time of writing (Oct 2026). The one-way ropeway ride is included. The Lake Ashi pirate ship is optional and self-paid (the listing says about ¥1,700).

Official Link: GetYourGuide – Mt. Fuji Tour, Hakone Ropeway, Owakudani, Lake Ashi

💡 Japan Pro Tip: The scheduled return is about 18:10 but can be after 8pm in traffic, so don’t book dinner before 9pm. If the ropeway is closed on the day, the operator says you can email for a refund.

5. Private Mt Fuji tour (Private car + guide)

The Lowdown: A driver-guide picks you up at your hotel and you set the route. That could be Chureito at dawn before the coaches, Hakone instead of the lakes, or both.

Where: Hotel pickup in Tokyo. Most listings cap groups at 3–6 people.

The Vibe: Calm, flexible and much easier with kids or older travellers.

Price: From about US$250–365 per group on GetYourGuide’s top private listings, and about US$460 for Klook’s Fuji and Hakone private tour, at time of writing (Oct 2026). Shared between four people, it’s not far off a bullet-train coach tour.

Official Link: GetYourGuide – Private Tour From Tokyo To Mount Fuji with Custom Itinerary

💡 Japan Pro Tip: Check the overtime rule before you book. Klook’s Fuji tours note that commercial vehicles can’t legally run more than 10 hours, and charge ¥5,000–10,000 per extra hour.

What does a Mt Fuji tour day actually look like?

Here’s the timed itinerary JRT Group publishes for its GetYourGuide Kawaguchiko tour, a fair picture of the photo-spot format:

LegTime
Coach from Tokyo110 min
Lake Yamanaka40 min
Oshino Hakkai (lunch at own cost)70 min
Oishi Park, Lake Kawaguchi40 min
Lawson Kawaguchiko Station20 min
Hikawa Clock Shop20 min
Arakurayama Sengen Park (Chureito)60 min
Coach back to Tokyoabout 2 hr 20 min

Add the short drives between stops and you’re on the coach for roughly half the day. Chureito is 398 steps up from Arakura Fuji Sengen Shrine (per Yamanashi’s official tourism site), so wear proper shoes.

Will you actually see Mt Fuji?

It depends almost entirely on the month. Fuji City in Shizuoka has recorded whether the mountain was visible at 8am every day since 1991. It looks at Fuji from the south side, so the lakes on the north side won’t match day for day, but the seasonal pattern holds. Here’s how often it was fully visible, 1991–2023:

MonthFully visibleMonthFully visible
January60% of daysJuly9%
February52%August15%
March40%September27%
April37%October41%
May30%November54%
June12%December61%

Source: Fuji City, Fujisan Kansoku no Kiroku (Reiwa 5 report): 4,398 fully visible days out of 12,053 observed. Percentages are our calculation from its monthly totals.

The takeaways:

  • Best: December and January, with clear views on about 3 days in 5. November and February are close behind.
  • Worst: June to August. In July you’ll see the full mountain about 1 day in 11. Tour operators admit it too: Klook’s listings warn that visibility is “lower in summer”.
  • Time of day: The data is for 8am, and Yamanashi’s tourism site recommends mornings for the Chureito shot because the sun is in front of the mountain. Early departures are worth it.
  • Right now (October–November): About 4–5 days in 10, plus autumn colour. Yamanashi lists Chureito’s foliage peak as late October to mid-November.

We’d check a live webcam the night before and book the tour early in your trip, so you have spare days to rebook if the weather turns.

What happens if it’s cloudy or the weather is bad?

Read this before you pay. Every operator above says clearly that a hidden Fuji is not grounds for a refund.

The 24-hour window is your weather lever. Check the forecast two days out and cancel at 25 hours if it looks grim. JRT Group also flags marathon days when stops may be reordered (12–13 December 2026, 2–3 and 10 January 2027, 7 March and 19 April 2027), and warns that weekend and holiday traffic can reshuffle the day.

Is a Mt Fuji tour worth it, or is DIY cheaper?

For one person, DIY by bus is cheaper. A tour mostly saves you the planning and the local transfers between scattered stops.

OptionOne-way costJourney timeBooking
Fuji Excursion limited express, Shinjuku → Kawaguchiko¥4,200 (fare ¥2,580 + limited express ¥1,620)about 2 hrsNo unreserved seats (reserved or “seat-unspecified” ticket); on sale 1 month ahead at 10:00
Fuji Excursion, Shinjuku → Shimo-Yoshida (for Chureito)¥4,010a few minutes lessAs above
Highway bus, Busta Shinjuku → Kawaguchiko Station¥2,000–2,200about 1 hr 45 minhighwaybus.com
Highway bus, Busta Shinjuku → Fuji 5th Station (summer season only)¥3,800 (Oct 2025 data)about 2 hrs 35 minhighwaybus.com

Fuji Excursion fares are from Fujikyu Railway. The Kawaguchiko bus fare range and journey times are from highwaybus.com (Keio/Fujikyu); the 5th Station fare is from JNTO’s Tokyo tourist-centre timetable (October 2025 data), so check highwaybus.com for your date.

A DIY day that works: take Fuji Excursion 3 from Shinjuku at 7:30, which reaches Kawaguchiko in about two hours. It also stops at Shimo-Yoshida, about 10 minutes’ walk from Chureito. Spend the day around the lake and come back on the 16:48 from Kawaguchiko. Departures from Shinjuku are 7:30, 8:30, 9:30 and 10:30 daily. Return trains leave Kawaguchiko at 14:08, 14:58, 16:48 and 17:41.

In autumn there are extras: a 9:02 from Shinjuku and a 16:12 back on weekends and holidays until 29 November, and an 11:34 out and a 15:39 back on weekdays from 1 October to 30 November (timetable from 14 March 2026). A return trip comes to ¥8,400 by train or about ¥4,000–4,400 by bus, before local buses.

Our verdict: Book a tour if you want Chureito, Oshino Hakkai and Oishi Park in one day without juggling local buses. It also makes sense if you want the 5th Station and Hakone in one go, which is hard to do on public transport. Go DIY if you’re happy with one or two spots and a slower day by the lake. Holders of the JR Tokyo Wide Pass should look hard at the train. For other easy rail escapes, see our day trips from Tokyo by train.

What are the rules at the Lawson, Chureito and Honcho Street?

The Kawaguchiko area has been fighting overtourism, and the tours stop exactly where the problems are.

  • Lawson Kawaguchiko Station-mae: The town put up a black screen to block the photo in May 2024, after jaywalking and littering. It took the screen down in August 2024 ahead of a typhoon, and officials said it would stay down as long as visitors behaved. Low fences were reported in December 2024, and on 7 August 2025 a barrier of about 1.4m went up to keep people out of the road while leaving the view open (reported by the Mainichi). Use the signalled crossing, don’t stand in the road, and stay off the dental clinic’s forecourt next door.
  • Chureito Pagoda: Fujiyoshida decided in February 2026 not to hold the Arakurayama Sengen Park cherry blossom festival that year, according to news reports quoting the city. The reports cited around 200,000 visitors a year, which the residential area couldn’t cope with. Guards and traffic control were still planned for 1–17 April. The city asks visitors to stay off private land and not photograph residents’ homes without permission.
  • Honcho Street (Fuji Michi): The famous “street running into Fuji” shot. Fujiyoshida’s official guide says plainly: don’t take photos from the road, and keep quiet. It’s a shopping and residential street, not a set.

What should you bring on a Mt Fuji day tour?

  • Layers: The 5th Station is about 2,300m up and much colder than Tokyo, even in autumn.
  • Grippy shoes: Chureito’s 398 steps and the gravel around Oshino Hakkai.
  • Cash and a charged IC card: For lunch, snacks and stalls. Most tours don’t include meals. See our IC card guide.
  • Snacks you eat outside: JRT Group bans food and drink on the coach.
  • No big suitcase: Goryo bans luggage; JRT and Klook need advance notice.
  • Your booking email: Pickup details land the night before, often in spam.

Staying the night instead? Our Hakone one-night itinerary covers the slower version of the Hakone route.

The bottom line

For most first-timers, a Kawaguchiko photo-spot tour (from about US$30–70) is the best value Mt Fuji day tour from Tokyo. Pay up for the 5th Station + Hakone bullet-train tour only if you want the mountain, the ropeway and the Shinkansen in one go. Book for November to February if you can, keep the 24-hour free cancellation, and compare options with English support on Japan Pro.

Mt fuji day tour from tokyo FAQ

How much is a Mt Fuji day tour from Tokyo?

Shared coach tours to the Lake Kawaguchiko photo spots are listed from about US$30–50 per person at time of writing (Oct 2026). Fuji 5th Station and Hakone tours that return by bullet train start from about US$150–160. Private tours start from about US$250–460 per group.

Where do Mt Fuji tours depart from in Tokyo?

Most leave Shinjuku or Tokyo Station between 7:20 and 8:00am. Japan Panoramic Tours uses Matsuya Ginza (7:20am) and the LOVE sculpture in Shinjuku (7:50am). Many Klook and GetYourGuide tours email the exact meeting point the evening before.

What is the best month to see Mt Fuji?

December and January. Fuji City’s 1991–2023 records show the mountain fully visible at 8am on about 60% of days in those months. July is worst, at about 9%.

Do I get a refund if Mt Fuji is not visible?

No. The operators we checked all say visibility cannot be guaranteed and give no refund if the tour runs. Use the free cancellation window, usually up to 24 hours before, if the forecast looks bad.

Is a Mt Fuji tour worth it compared with going by train?

A tour is worth it if you want several scattered spots like Chureito, Oshino Hakkai and Oishi Park, or the 5th Station plus Hakone, in one day. Going solo, the highway bus from Busta Shinjuku to Kawaguchiko (¥2,000–2,200 one way on highwaybus.com) is cheaper than most tours.

Do Mt Fuji day tours go to the 5th Station in winter?

Often not. Goryo Travel swaps its 5th Station stop for the Mt. Fuji Museum in the off-season. Japan Panoramic Tours uses an alternative stop if weather stops the coach beyond the 4th Station.

How long is a Mt Fuji day tour from Tokyo?

Usually 10–11 hours, with about two hours on the coach each way. Operators warn that traffic can add two to three hours to the return, so don’t book a fixed dinner.
