Japan Fireworks Calendar 2026–27: Every Hanabi Festival With All Details

Table of contents
This Japan fireworks calendar puts every big hanabi of 2026–27 in one place. Summer in Japan means one thing after dark: fireworks. From late July through August, pretty much every town with a river, lake or harbour lights up the sky — and the heavyweights (Sumida in Tokyo, Nagaoka, Suwa and Omagari) all land within about four weeks of each other. But the fun doesn’t stop when summer does. Autumn brings serious competitions, winter has fireworks over snow and Mt Fuji, and Lake Toya in Hokkaido fires every single night for six months.
This Japan fireworks calendar covers October 2026 to September 2027 — 58 displays nationwide, each checked against the organiser’s own announcements and the big Japanese listings (Walkerplus Hanabi, Jorudan Hanabi and Weathernews). Heads-up: most 2027 dates haven’t been announced yet. Where a festival has a fixed date (Nagaoka on 2–3 August, Suwa on 15 August), we list it. Where it follows a pattern (Sumida on the last Saturday of July), it’s marked Expected date. For 2027 events, times, shell counts and seat prices are from the 2026 edition. Last checked 14 October 2026.

How to use this Japan fireworks calendar
Open a month to see every show in it, then tap Details for the full rundown: start time, shell count, nearest station, the cheapest paid seat, free viewing spots and the rain plan. The map pins each display, so you can see at a glance what's within reach of where you're staying. Badges tell you how solid a date is — Expected date means it follows the festival's usual pattern but hasn't been announced, and Date TBA means there's no reliable pattern yet. We re-check the Japan fireworks calendar as organisers publish their 2027 dates.
Building a trip around the fireworks? Pair winter shows with our guide to winter in Japan 2026–27, end a lakeside or seaside display with a soak in one of Japan's best onsen towns, and use the JR Tokyo Wide Pass to reach Tsuchiura, Narita or Kawaguchi from Tokyo. Heading to Hakkeijima? Our round-up of Japan's biggest aquariums covers the island's aquarium too.
Know before you go
If it rains
It depends on the show. Many go ahead in light rain; some have a backup date (Tsuchiura, Kumano, Gifu), and others just cancel (Sumida, Tokyo Bay). Organisers announce on the day — often by morning or noon — on their own site, in Japanese. Anything booked through us is refunded on cancellation and moved on postponement.
How seats are sold
Seats for the summer shows go on sale from spring to early summer — Tokyo Bay opened in early July 2026 for an October show. Sales run through Japanese-language sites, lotteries and convenience-store ticket machines, and the big names sell out fast. The real barrier is the language, not the price. That's where we come in.
What to bring
A leisure sheet to sit on, bug spray, a hand fan and more water than you think you need — August riverbanks stay hot and sticky after dark. Bins are rare, so bring a bag for your rubbish. Tripods and selfie sticks are often restricted in crowded areas.
Food, drink and toilets
Food stalls open in the afternoon and the queues peak just before the show, so eat early. Toilet queues are long — go well before the start. Convenience stores near the venue often run out of drinks and ice, so stock up on the way.
Kids, mobility and yukata
Crowds this dense are tough with a stroller — a reserved seat is worth it with small children, and the big shells are seriously loud. Many large events have wheelchair areas that need booking in advance. Yukata rental with dressing takes about an hour, so book an afternoon slot.
Getting out afterwards
Leaving is always worse than arriving: expect long station queues and one-way walking routes that add distance. Walking one station down the line is usually faster — or book a late dinner nearby and let the crowds clear.

Omagari, Nagaoka and Tsuchiura are known as Japan's three great fireworks. If you're going to build a trip around a show, it's one of these — and their paid seats sell out well before the day.

Japan's top competition
One of Japan's three great fireworks shows, and a proper competition: pyrotechnicians from across the country battle for two and a half hours for the Prime Minister's Prize. The starmines are the main event, and cold November air keeps the colours razor sharp. Japanese name: 土浦全国花火競技大会.

Japan fireworks calendar by season
Most people think of hanabi as a summer-only thing. They're half right: the big crowds and the big names are in July and August. But if you know where to look, the Japan fireworks calendar has something going on in almost every month — often with smaller crowds and cheaper seats.
Summer (July–August): peak hanabi
This is when the famous fireworks festivals in Japan happen, and when entire cities stop for a night. Tokyo's Sumida River show (about 20,000 shells) is on the last Saturday of July; Nagaoka fires on 2 and 3 August; Lake Suwa goes off on 15 August; and Omagari's competition closes the season on the last Saturday of August. Add Aomori's Nebuta finale on 7 August, Kumano's sea-cliff fireworks on 17 August and dozens more, and August 2027 alone has 19 shows on this calendar.
Sumida River Fireworks Festival, Tokyo — expected on Saturday 31 July 2027.
Autumn (October–November): competitions and clear skies
Autumn is the insider's season. The air is cooler and clearer, the sun sets earlier, and the crowds are a fraction of August's. Tsuchiura's All-Japan Fireworks Competition on 7 November 2026 is the headline — one of Japan's three great hanabi festivals — and Tokyo Bay's display returns on 24 October 2026 for the first time since 2015. Chikusei (20,026 shells) and Huis Ten Bosch (22,000) are two of the biggest of the year.
Winter (December–February): fireworks over snow and sea
Winter shows are short — often 5 to 20 minutes — but many are free. Odaiba fires every Saturday in December 2026, Atami lights up its bay on 6 and 25 December and 21 February, and Fuji Kawaguchiko runs winter fireworks on weekends from late January with snow-capped Mt Fuji behind. Up in Hokkaido, Rusutsu Resort celebrates Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve with a torchlit ski run and fireworks over the snow.
Fuji Kawaguchiko Winter Fireworks — weekends from late January (2027 dates not yet announced).
Spring (March–June): the quiet months
Spring is the thinnest part of the Japan fireworks calendar. Hakkeijima in Yokohama fires on 20 and 21 March 2027, Lake Toya starts its nightly season in late April, Adachi opens Tokyo's season on the last Saturday of May, and Yokohama celebrates its port opening on 2 June. Okinawa's Ryukyu Kaiensai and Fukuoka's Higashi-ku fireworks usually land on an April Saturday — we'll add them once their 2027 dates are out.
Tokyo fireworks 2027 (and this autumn)
Staying in Tokyo? You don't need to leave the city for world-class hanabi. Here's every show in and around the capital on our list, in date order.
Tokyo Bay Grand Fireworks — Sat 24 October 2026, about 12,000 shells off Harumi Wharf. All-ticketed, from ¥5,000.
Odaiba Rainbow Fireworks — every Saturday in December 2026, about 1,300 shells, free.
Adachi Fireworks — expected Sat 29 May 2027, about 13,000 shells on the Arakawa.
Katsushika Noryo Fireworks — expected Tue 27 July 2027, about 20,000 shells beside retro Shibamata.
Sumida River Fireworks Festival — expected Sat 31 July 2027, about 20,000 shells with Skytree as backdrop.
Tachikawa Showa Kinen Park Fireworks — expected Sat 31 July 2027, about 5,000 shells.
Edogawa and Itabashi Fireworks — both expected Sat 7 August 2027, about 14,000 and 15,000 shells.
Within easy reach of Tokyo, Tsuchiura (7 November 2026), Narita (7 November 2026), Kawaguchi (14 November 2026), Yokohama's port-opening night (2 June 2027) and Kisarazu (15 August 2027) are all doable as an evening trip — just plan your train home before you go.
Odaiba Rainbow Fireworks — free, every Saturday in December 2026.
Hanabi festivals beyond Tokyo
Niigata, Nagano and the Japan Alps
This is serious fireworks country. Nagaoka's Phoenix — a wall of fire nearly 2km wide — is the most emotional display in Japan, fired every 2 and 3 August in memory of the 1945 air raid and the 2004 Chuetsu earthquake. Down the road, Katakai fires its 4-shaku shell, about 120cm across, on both nights of its September festival. Lake Suwa (15 August) and Gifu's Nagara River (expected 14 August) round things out.
Nagaoka Grand Fireworks — 2 and 3 August, every year.
Tohoku and Hokkaido
Up north, fireworks come with festivals attached. Sendai's show on 5 August kicks off Tanabata week; Aomori's on 7 August sends the Nebuta floats out to sea; and Omagari's competition (expected 28 August) is the most prestigious in the country. In Hokkaido, Lake Toya fires every night from late April to October, Kachimai lights up Obihiro on 13 August, and Hakodate's harbour show sits right next to the station.
Kansai, Chugoku and Shikoku
Osaka's Tenjin Matsuri on 25 July is a festival first and a fireworks show second — about 100 lantern-lit boats on the river under the shells. Naniwa Yodogawa has moved to October. Further west, Kanmon Strait (13 August) fires from both Shimonoseki and Mojiko, Matsue's lake fireworks run over two nights in early August, and Miyazu floats about 10,000 lanterns on the bay near Amanohashidate on 16 August.
Kumano Grand Fireworks — the sea-surface shells are a Kumano speciality (17 August).
Kyushu and the south
Kumano in Mie fires every 17 August on Shichirigahama beach, with fireworks set into the Onigajo sea cliffs. In Kyushu, Huis Ten Bosch's 22,000-shell show (14 November 2026) is billed as western Japan's biggest, and Kagoshima's summer fireworks (expected 28 August 2027) go off with the Sakurajima volcano behind.
Hanabi words worth knowing
Hanabi (花火) — fireworks; literally 'fire flowers'. A hanabi taikai is a fireworks festival.
Starmine (スターマイン) — a rapid-fire barrage of many shells in sequence, usually set to music. The big crowd-pleasers.
Shakudama (尺玉) — a 1-shaku shell, about 30cm across, that opens several hundred metres wide.
Yonshakudama (四尺玉) — a 4-shaku shell, about 120cm across and 420kg. Katakai is famous for it.
Niagara — a waterfall of sparks hung along a bridge or wire. Itabashi's 'Niagara in the sky' is a classic.
Yukata — the light summer kimono that half the crowd will be wearing.
Fireworks festivals in Japan on a budget
Good news: watching is free at most shows. Lake Toya, Odaiba, Atami, Fuji Kawaguchiko, Hakone Gora and Hakodate charge nothing at all. If you want a seat without spending big, the cheapest paid tickets on our list in 2026 were Hakkeijima and Sapporo (¥1,000), Kagoshima and Tachikawa (¥1,500), and Edogawa, Itabashi, Kanmon and Nagaoka's North area (¥2,000).
Eat before you go — food-stall queues peak just before the first shell.
Stock up on drinks on the way; nearby convenience stores sell out.
Bring a ¥100-shop leisure sheet rather than renting one at the venue.
Book a hotel near the venue for the big shows — the last trains are packed and taxis are scarce.
Fireworks etiquette
Claim only the space you need with your sheet, and don't leave it unattended for hours at busy shows.
Take your rubbish home — bins are rare and organisers rely on visitors.
Keep umbrellas and tall camera rigs down so people behind you can see.
Follow the staff's one-way routes when leaving, even if it feels like a detour.
Most of these rules come down to one idea: a hanabi festival is a shared night out for the whole town. Locals have often been coming to the same spot on the same riverbank for decades, so a little patience and a polite sumimasen when you squeeze past go a long way.
Suwa Lake Festival Fireworks — 15 August, every year.
What's not on this Japan fireworks calendar (yet)
A handful of well-known hanabi festivals aren't listed because their 2027 dates haven't been announced and don't follow a fixed rule. We'd rather leave a gap than give you a wrong date. Expect these to be added to the Japan fireworks calendar once organisers confirm them:
Lake Biwa Grand Fireworks (Shiga) — usually an early-August weekday.
Jingu Gaien Fireworks (Tokyo) — a Saturday in early or mid-August; one to watch for Tokyo fireworks 2027.
Ryukyu Kaiensai (Okinawa) and Fukuoka Higashi-ku Fireworks — usually an April Saturday.
Atami's spring, summer and autumn shows — several dates a year, announced in batches.
Nagasaki Minato Matsuri — usually a late-July weekend.
Some famous names are missing for other reasons. Yatsushiro's national competition in Kumamoto is cancelled for 2026 after the Kumamoto earthquake. The PL fireworks in Osaka have had no public viewing area since 2020, and Miyajima's underwater fireworks haven't run in recent years.
Planning a trip around Japan fireworks 2027
The biggest fireworks festivals in Japan sell out everything around them — seats, hotels, even the last trains. A few rules of thumb:
Book your room first. Hotels in Nagaoka, Omagari and Aomori fill up months ahead. Staying a shinkansen stop away (Niigata or Echigo-Yuzawa for Nagaoka, Hirosaki for Aomori) is the usual workaround.
Watch for seat sales from spring. Summer shows open sales anywhere from spring to early summer, mostly through Japanese-language sites and lotteries.
Have a backup night. Rain plans differ — some hanabi festivals postpone, others simply cancel — so don't schedule a show on your last night in Japan.
Check the date again in June. Every Expected date on this calendar is based on the festival's usual pattern; we update entries as dates are confirmed.
How to photograph hanabi
Phones handle fireworks better than they used to, but a few basics help. Use a night or long-exposure mode, brace your phone against something solid, and frame the skyline, river or bridge — a burst over a landmark beats a burst in an empty sky. With a camera, a low ISO, a small aperture and exposures of a few seconds are the classic starting point. Check the rules before you bring a tripod: many crowded viewing areas restrict them.
Whichever show you pick from our Japan fireworks calendar, get there early, pack light and plan your route home — then enjoy one of the best nights of the Japanese year.
How to get seats at Japan's fireworks festivals
Paid seating is the difference between watching the fireworks and watching the back of someone's head. Most big events sell some mix of these:
Reserved chairs or numbered spots — the standard paid seat. In 2026 the cheapest ranged from ¥1,000 (Hakkeijima, Sapporo) and ¥2,000 (Kanmon, Edogawa, Nagaoka's North area) up to ¥5,000–¥8,000 at the big names (Tokyo Bay, Omagari, Sumida).
Group mats and boxes — a marked square for four to six people, sold as one lot. Better value if you're not going solo.
Premium, table and boat seats — rarer and pricier, like Tokyo Skytree's viewing tickets for Sumida or boat seats at the Tenjin Matsuri.
Some shows on this Japan fireworks calendar are fully ticketed, with no free viewing at all — Nagaoka's riverbed, Tokyo Bay, Chikusei and Nishi-Awa among them. Sales are in Japanese, often by lottery or through convenience-store machines, and the good seats go within days.
For the big summer shows, book the day sales open. Leave it until July and you'll be standing.
Getting home
The trains afterwards are the real endurance event. Stations near big displays hold crowds outside the gates long after the last shell, and taxis nearby are basically a myth. Walk one station down the line — it's almost always faster than waiting.
Japan fireworks calendar FAQ
When is fireworks season in Japan?
Peak season on the Japan fireworks calendar is late July and August, when most of the big hitters go off. There's a second, smaller season in October and November, short winter shows from December to February, and Lake Toya in Hokkaido fires every night from late April to the end of October.
What are the biggest fireworks festivals in Japan?
Omagari (Akita), Nagaoka (Niigata) and Tsuchiura (Ibaraki) are known as Japan's three great fireworks. In Tokyo, the Sumida River Fireworks Festival is the famous one, with about 20,000 shells. On sheer numbers, Huis Ten Bosch (22,000) and Joso Kinugawa (about 22,000) are among the biggest.
When is the Sumida River Fireworks Festival in 2027?
It's held on the last Saturday of July, so Saturday 31 July 2027 is expected. The date hasn't been officially announced yet — in 2026 it was on 25 July.
Do you need a ticket to watch fireworks in Japan?
Not always. Most shows can be watched for free from riverbanks, beaches or parks, with paid seats closer to the action. Some are fully ticketed with no free viewing at all — including Nagaoka's riverbed, the Tokyo Bay Grand Fireworks, Chikusei and Nishi-Awa.
Are there fireworks in Japan in winter?
Yes, and they're a treat. Odaiba fires a short free show every Saturday in December, Atami lights up its bay in winter, Fuji Kawaguchiko has winter fireworks on weekends in late January and February, and ski resorts like Rusutsu celebrate Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve with fireworks.
What happens to fireworks festivals if it rains?
It depends on the show. Many go ahead in light rain. Some move to a backup date (Tsuchiura, Kumano, Gifu), while others are simply cancelled in bad weather (Sumida, Tokyo Bay). Organisers announce the call on the day, usually in Japanese on their official site.
