Which Kansai Christmas market should you pick?
- Couples and photographers: Kobe Nunobiki. Go on a night-opening day and time the ropeway for sunset.
- Families with small kids: Tenshiba. Free, flat, next to a big lawn and Tennoji Zoo, and it opens at 11:00.
- Late arrivals or one evening in Osaka: Umeda Sky Building. The market serves until 21:30 and the tree stays lit until 23:00.
- Budget travellers: Tenshiba or Umeda. Both are free; you only pay for food and drink.
- Bad weather: Umeda. You can duck into the building and the underground mall, or head to Hankyu Umeda’s indoor Christmas market on the 9th floor (18 November–25 December). Tenshiba runs in rain but is fully outdoors. The Kobe ropeway can stop in high wind.
- Only one night in Kansai? Kobe if it is a Friday, weekend, holiday or 11–28 December. On other weekdays the Kobe garden shuts at 17:00, so pick Umeda.
The best Christmas markets in Kobe and Osaka for 2026
1. Kobe Christmas Market at Nunobiki Herb Gardens (Mountain Market)
The Lowdown: This year’s theme is “Christmas at the Old Castle”. A German beer and wine festival, a market of German ornaments, nutcrackers and cuckoo clocks, a 7 m Christmas tower on the observation plaza and a 25 m metasequoia “Forest Christmas Tree” with around 1,600 bulbs. The “light corridor” and an autumn-leaves light-up both switch on at 15:00, so in November you get the leaves and Christmas together.
- Where: Kobe Nunobiki Herb Gardens, reached by the Kobe Nunobiki Ropeway from Shin-Kobe Station (about 5 minutes’ walk, then a 10-minute ride).
- The Vibe: Alpine Christmas with a city view. Busy on weekends after 16:00.
- Price: Christmas-season ropeway return plus garden entry ¥3,300 adult, ¥1,650 child. No night discount during the season.
- Official Link: kobeherb.com Kobe Christmas Market 2026
💡 Japan Pro Tip: The tree lighting ceremony is on opening day, Saturday 7 November: about 17:20 on the observation plaza, about 17:45 for the Forest tree. After that the Forest tree lights daily at 16:30 and the Christmas tower at 16:00.
2. Christmas Market in Osaka at Tenshiba (Park Market)
The Lowdown: This Christmas market takes over the lawn at Tennoji Park. The official shop list shows 24 stalls: 15 food and drink stalls (most of them “Haus” huts) doing sausages, schnitzel, goulash and glühwein, plus 9 gift stalls selling snow globes, stollen and candles.
- Where: Tenshiba and Tenshiba i:na, Tennoji Park. A short walk from JR and Osaka Metro Tennoji Station and Kintetsu Osaka-Abenobashi.
- The Vibe: Fairground-casual. Families by day, after-work crowds from 18:00.
- Price: Free entry. 2026 mug ¥1,000 (tax incl.); hot drinks in the mug are ¥100 cheaper than in a paper cup.
- Official Link: osaka-christmasmarket.com
💡 Japan Pro Tip: Mugs sell out. A two-mug set is ¥1,900 if you pre-order online through the link on the official site (¥2,000 on the day). Opening day, 20 November, starts at 16:00, not 11:00.
3. Umeda Sky Building Christmas 2026 (Skyscraper Market)

The Lowdown: The long-running Umeda Christmas market, which many visitors still search for as the German Christmas Market Osaka, now runs under the “Umeda Sky Building Christmas” name. The 2026 theme is “The Starlight Town”, built around a 25 m LED-mapped tree in the Wonder Square plaza, with stalls around it and a limited-edition mug planned.
- Where: Wonder Square (1F plaza) and Takimikoji (B1), Umeda Sky Building, a walk from Osaka and Umeda stations.
- The Vibe: City-centre, date-night, and the latest-opening market in Kansai.
- Price: Wonder Square and Takimikoji free. Sky Garden Observatory ¥2,000 adult, ¥500 age 4 to primary (9:30–22:30, last entry 22:00).
- Official Link: skybldg.co.jp Christmas 2026
💡 Japan Pro Tip: Come after 18:00. Music-and-light tree shows run 18:00–21:30 from 13 November, and the main “Starlight Town” programme runs 17:00–21:30 from 1 to 25 December, on the hour and half hour, for about 6 minutes. The 2026 limited mug is ¥900 and the capsule-toy mug charms are ¥500 a go, both at the Market Service Center. The food menu was due in late October.
4. Grand Wish Christmas at Grand Front Osaka (Light Show)
The Lowdown: Not a market, but it is a short walk from Umeda Sky Building, so most people combine the two. The 14th edition puts a light-show tree on the North Building 1F, with shows every 15 minutes, plus a Disney “Gift of Story” pop-up and a Grand Santa Parade on 22 December.
- Where: Grand Front Osaka North Building 1F and Umekita Plaza, next to JR Osaka Station.
- The Vibe: Shopping-mall glamour; a quick photo stop.
- Price: Free.
- Official Link: grandfront-osaka.jp
💡 Japan Pro Tip: The organisers say full programme details come in late October (TBA). The Umekita champagne-gold illumination continues to 28 February 2027, so it still works after Christmas. More on the area in our Umeda Osaka guide.
5. Hankyu Christmas Market at Hankyu Umeda (Indoor Market)
The Lowdown: Confirmed: Wednesday 18 November – Friday 25 December 2026. Osaka’s department-store Christmas market fills the 9th-floor event hall and the Shukusai Hiroba festival hall at Hankyu Umeda Main Store. You’ll find food stalls, ornaments and gifts. From 19 November there’s a light show every hour on the hour, 11:00–19:00, and the hall is scented from 5 minutes before each show.
Where: Hankyu Umeda Main Store, 9F, Kita-ku. It’s beside Hankyu Osaka-umeda Station and a short walk from JR Osaka.
The Vibe: Warm, dry and very Osaka. Think shopping trip with glühwein, not a park picnic.
Price: Free to browse. The merry-go-round in the festival hall costs ¥350 per ride, the same for every age including preschoolers. You need a reservation for a specific date and time. Online sales open at 10:00 on 4 November 2026, and tickets aren’t sold in the store.
Official Link: Hankyu Christmas Market 2026
💡 Japan Pro Tip: This is your rain plan, and it pairs easily with Umeda Sky Building after dark. Don’t leave it to Christmas Day. On 25 December the last light show is at 16:00 and merry-go-round sales stop at 15:00.
How much do the Kobe ropeway and Christmas market cost?
From 7 November to 28 December the herb gardens charge a Christmas-season fare, and the usual night ticket (sold after 17:00 in other seasons) is suspended. Web tickets can be collected on the 4F of the ropeway base station.
| Ticket | Adult | Child |
|---|---|---|
| Christmas season return ropeway + garden entry (7 Nov–28 Dec) | ¥3,300 | ¥1,650 |
| Regular return ropeway + garden entry (outside Christmas season) | ¥2,500 | ¥1,250 |
| Night return (after 17:00, outside summer and Christmas) | ¥2,000 | ¥1,200 |
| Preschool children | Free | |
What time should you ride the Nunobiki Ropeway for the night view?
Sunset in Kobe is early in December. According to Japan’s National Astronomical Observatory, it is 17:01 on 7 November, 16:52 on 20 November, 16:49 on 1 and 10 December, 16:52 on 20 December and 16:54 on 25 December. The city lights look their best for about 30 minutes after that.
| Day type | Last ropeway up | Garden closes | Last ropeway down | Plan |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mon–Thu, 7 Nov–10 Dec (not holidays) | 16:45 | 17:00 | 17:15 | Go up by 15:00. Light corridor 15:00, tree 16:30, then straight down. Sunset is 17:01 on 7 November and about 16:50 from 20 November, so early-November weekday sunsets come right at garden closing. |
| Fri–Sun and holidays (incl. Mon 23 Nov) | 20:15 | 20:30 | 21:00 | Go up 15:30–16:00, watch sunset, eat at the stalls (open to 20:00), ride down after 18:30. |
| Every day, 11–28 Dec | 20:15 | 20:30 | 21:00 | As above. Expect queues after 16:00 on 19–25 December. |
One catch: on night-opening days, rides up from the middle station to the top stop when the garden area closes, roughly 17:15–17:30 depending on the day. Ride down from the top, and sit facing downhill: the gondolas are fully glazed and the city lights grow as you descend.
Sunset in Kobe, 2026 (NAOJ):
| Date | Sunset |
|---|---|
| Sat 7 Nov (opening day) | 17:01 |
| Fri 20 Nov | 16:52 |
| Sat 5 Dec | 16:48 |
| Fri 11 Dec (daily night opening starts) | 16:49 |
| Sun 20 Dec | 16:52 |
| Fri 25 Dec | 16:54 |
| Mon 28 Dec (last day) | 16:56 |
Source: National Astronomical Observatory of Japan, Kobe sunset times. Through most of the season sunset falls between 16:48 and 16:56. On a night-opening day, riding up by about 15:45 gets you the light corridor, the 16:00 tower, the 16:30 tree and the sunset in one go.
How do you get from Shin-Kobe Station to the ropeway?
The ropeway base station (Sanroku Station) sits beside ANA Crowne Plaza Hotel Kobe, on the west side of Shin-Kobe Station, about a 5-minute walk away. You don’t need an exit number. The City of Kobe has put up ropeway signs in JR Shin-Kobe, the subway station and Kotonoha Kobe; follow them towards the hotel.
- By Shinkansen: Leave the JR Shin-Kobe ticket gates, turn west towards ANA Crowne Plaza and follow the ropeway signs.
- By subway from Sannomiya: Seishin-Yamate Line one stop to Shin-Kobe. The station is directly connected to the hotel. Follow the ropeway signs from the gates.
- By bus from Sannomiya: City bus 2, 18 or 92 to Nunobiki, then 5 minutes on foot, or bus 64 to Shin-Kobe Station.

How much is mulled wine at the Kansai Christmas markets?

| Item | Kobe Nunobiki | Osaka Tenshiba |
|---|---|---|
| Glühwein (mulled wine) | ¥900 (plaza), ¥850 (The Veranda Kobe) | ¥800–900 |

| Hot main | Japanese beef and mushroom stew ¥1,650 | Beef goulash ¥1,400 |

| Sweet | Stollen ¥800 | Crêpes ¥1,500; churros ¥900 |
| Beer | German beer and wine at the Beer & Wine Fest | Paulaner Weissbier ¥1,300 |
Stall hours in Kobe are shorter than the garden’s. The Beer & Wine Fest runs 11:00–16:00 and the plaza market 10:30–16:30, both extended to 20:00 on night-opening days.
Where should you eat Kobe beef after the Christmas market?
Ride down by about 18:30, take the subway one stop to Sannomiya and book a 19:00 Kobe beef teppanyaki table. Most of the city’s Kobe beef restaurants are in Sannomiya and Kitano, within 10 minutes of Shin-Kobe. Our guide to Kobe beef restaurants in Kobe sorts them by budget. Book ahead for any night between 19 and 25 December.
Would you rather stay up the mountain? The herb gardens’ own Christmas Special Lunch and Dinner runs 19–28 December, with reservations from 14 November (official page). From November 2026 you can book Kobe beef dinners and Kobe night tours on Japan Pro.
Can you do Osaka and Kobe Christmas markets in one day?
Yes, if you pick a night-opening day for Kobe (Friday to Sunday, a holiday or any day 11–28 December). Osaka to Kobe is quick on either line:
- Hanshin Railway: Osaka-Umeda to Kobe-Sannomiya, about 30–35 minutes by limited express. Usually the cheapest option; not covered by the JR Pass. (Hanshin)
- JR Special Rapid: Osaka to Sannomiya in about 20–25 minutes. Covered by the JR Pass. (JR West)
- Shinkansen: Shin-Osaka to Shin-Kobe in about 13 minutes, landing you next to the ropeway. Worth it with a JR Pass.
- 11:00 Tenshiba market opens. Early lunch of goulash and a glühwein before the crowds.
- 13:00 JR from Tennoji to Osaka (Loop Line), then JR Special Rapid to Sannomiya. Or Hanshin from Umeda.
- 14:30 Walk up through Kitano’s old foreign residences towards Shin-Kobe (about 20 minutes).
- 15:30 Ropeway up. Light corridor is on, Christmas tower lights at 16:00, Forest tree at 16:30.
- 16:50 Sunset over Kobe from the observation plaza.
- 18:30 Ropeway down, subway to Sannomiya.
- 19:00 Kobe beef dinner.
- 21:00 Back to Umeda. Umeda Sky Building’s tree stays lit until 23:00, though stalls take last orders at 21:30.
