Nebuta, Kanto and Tanabata 2027: Three Tohoku Summer Festivals in Six Days
The Aomori Nebuta Festival, Akita Kanto and Sendai Tanabata run back to back in the first week of August, and with the Tohoku Shinkansen you can see all three in six days. In 2027 the expected dates are 2–7 August for Nebuta, 3–6 August for Kanto and 6–8 August for Tanabata, so the sweet spot is Tuesday 3 to Sunday 8 August 2027.
This guide gives you the day-by-day route with train times and 2026 fares, paid seats for each festival, how to dance in the Nebuta parade as a haneto (and where to rent the costume), and why you should be booking rooms now, in October 2026. For the full year of festivals, see our Japanese festival calendar. Everything was checked between 19 and 21 October 2026.

When are the Tohoku summer festivals in 2027?
None of the three organisers had announced 2027 dates when we checked. All three run on fixed calendar dates every year, so the dates below are marked expected; times are from the 2026 editions.
| Festival | 2027 dates (expected) | Main event | Paid seats (2026) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aomori Nebuta Festival | Mon 2 – Sat 7 Aug | Night parades from 19:00 (2–3 Aug) and 18:45 (4–6 Aug); day parade 13:00 and fireworks 19:15 on 7 Aug | ¥4,000 (¥9,500 day parade + fireworks set) |
| Akita Kanto Matsuri | Tue 3 – Fri 6 Aug | Night performance about 19:00–20:50 on Kanto Odori; daytime contest 4–6 Aug | ¥3,500–¥4,500; six-person box ¥28,000 |
| Sendai Tanabata Matsuri | Fri 6 – Sun 8 Aug | Streamers in the shopping arcades, 10:00–21:00 (about 20:00 on the last day) | Free |
| Sendai Tanabata fireworks | Thu 5 Aug | About 16,000 shells, 19:30–20:30 in 2026 | Not announced for 2026 |
Sources: the official Nebuta, Kanto and Tanabata sites, Akita City’s tourism site and Walkerplus for the fireworks. Nebuta’s site gives the dates as “every year, 2 to 7 August”, and Tanabata’s as 6 to 8 August. The Sendai fireworks are also in our Japan fireworks calendar 2027.
The 6-day Tohoku summer festivals itinerary
The order is forced by the calendar: Aomori first, then Akita, then Sendai, finishing on Tanabata’s last day. Here is the route at a glance, using the expected 2027 dates.
| Day | Date (2027) | Route | Evening |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Tue 3 Aug | Tokyo → Shin-Aomori → Aomori | Nebuta night parade from 19:00 |
| 2 | Wed 4 Aug | Aomori (free day) | Nebuta from 18:45, dance as a haneto |
| 3 | Thu 5 Aug | Shin-Aomori → Morioka → Akita | Kanto night performance |
| 4 | Fri 6 Aug | Akita (daytime contest) → Sendai | Tanabata streets until 21:00 |
| 5 | Sat 7 Aug | Sendai | Tanabata, full day |
| 6 | Sun 8 Aug | Sendai → Tokyo | Home by evening |
Day 1 (Tue 3 Aug): Tokyo to the Aomori Nebuta Festival
Take a morning Hayabusa from Tokyo to Shin-Aomori. Journey times run from about three hours to just under three and a half: the Hayabusa 34 we checked takes 3 hours 26 minutes in the other direction. Shin-Aomori is not in the city centre; change to the JR Ou Line for one stop to Aomori, where the parade route is a short walk from the station.
Drop your bags and be on the route by 18:30. On 2 and 3 August the children’s nebuta lead off at 19:00, followed by about 15 of the big floats, per the official schedule. It is a gentler first night than the full line-up.
Day 2 (Wed 4 Aug): the full Nebuta night
Keep the day light. Nebuta nights are long, loud and sweaty, especially if you join in. On 4–6 August about 20 large floats roll out from two starting points at 18:45 and loop anticlockwise around the city centre. The organisers warn that, depending on progress, not every float completes the loop before the road reopens, so do not arrive late expecting to see them all.
This is the night to dance as a haneto (see below). Book your costume fitting for the afternoon.
Day 3 (Thu 5 Aug): Aomori to Akita
There is no direct Shinkansen between Aomori and Akita. The quickest route is a Hayabusa from Shin-Aomori to Morioka (about 1 hour 6 minutes), then a Komachi from Morioka to Akita (about 1 hour 40 minutes). Allow three hours door to door with the change, and aim to be in Akita by mid-afternoon.
The Kanto poles enter Kanto Odori at about 18:50 and the performance runs to about 20:50; traffic closes from 18:15, per Akita City’s tourism site. Stay for the “fureai” (hands-on) kanto session at about 20:35, when spectators can get up close to the poles and performers.
Day 4 (Fri 6 Aug): Kanto by day, Sendai by night
Spend the morning at the Kanto technique contest (Myogi Taikai) at the Area Nakaichi plaza. In 2026 it ran 9:00–15:40 on 4–5 August and 9:20–15:00 on 6 August. Then take an afternoon Komachi to Sendai: the Komachi couples to a Hayabusa at Morioka and runs straight through, about 2 hours 20 minutes in total.
Check in and walk into the arcades. Tanabata day one runs until 21:00, and the evening is cooler than the middle of the day.
Day 5 (Sat 7 Aug): Sendai Tanabata
The decorations hang in the covered shopping streets of central Sendai: Nakakecho, Clis Road, Sun Mall, Bland Dome, Ichibancho 4-chome and Omachi, per the official site. Go early: the arcades open at 10:00, and by the afternoon a Saturday crowd moves at shuffle pace. Walkerplus puts typical attendance at about 2 million over the three days.
The official site runs guided walks with Sendai tourism staff and craft workshops during the festival; check the 2027 programme in July.
Day 6 (Sun 8 Aug): back to Tokyo
Take a last morning walk under the streamers, then a Hayabusa or Yamabiko to Tokyo. The fastest trains take about an hour and a half; our checked Hayabusa 34 runs Sendai 18:31 to Tokyo 20:04. Note that the final day closes earlier, at about 20:00.
Want the fireworks too? Start a day earlier
Shift everything back one day (Monday 2 to Saturday 7 August 2027) and you can be in Sendai on Thursday 5 August for the Tanabata fireworks: about 16,000 shells from 19:30 to 20:30 near Nishi Park in 2026, held in rain and cancelled only in a storm. The trade-off is one Kanto night instead of a full evening and a contest morning.

How much do the trains cost?
These are JR East’s regular-season e-ticket prices for one adult in a reserved standard seat, valid from 14 March 2026. JR East prices vary by season, so expect early August to be similar or slightly higher.
| Leg | Train | Time | Fare (2026) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tokyo → Shin-Aomori | Hayabusa | About 3–3½ h | ¥17,910 |
| Shin-Aomori → Akita | Hayabusa + Komachi via Morioka | About 3 h | Check JR East fare search |
| Akita → Sendai | Komachi | About 2 h 20 min | Check JR East fare search |
| Sendai → Tokyo | Hayabusa or Yamabiko | About 1½ h | ¥11,110 |
| Total | Varies by route |
Fares are from JR East’s 2026 fare revision leaflet; for the Aomori–Akita and Akita–Sendai legs, check the current price on JR East’s booking site. Times come from JR East’s timetable.
Is the JR EAST PASS worth it for this trip?
Narrowly, yes. Since 14 March 2026 JR East sells one JR EAST PASS for its whole network, replacing the old Tohoku-area pass: ¥35,000 for 5 consecutive days or ¥50,000 for 10 (children half), for holders of a non-Japanese passport. It includes reserved seats on the Shinkansen.
Start it on Day 1 and it covers Tokyo to Aomori, Akita and Sendai. Buy the last leg home separately for ¥11,110. Compare the total with single tickets on JR East’s fare search; the pass also lets you change trains without rebooking. If you hold a Japanese passport, buy e-tickets instead. Aomori Nebuta Festival: what to know
Nebuta are giant lantern floats, lit from inside and pushed through the streets with a band of festival musicians and crowds of dancers. Walkerplus puts typical attendance at around 2.5 million over six days. The schedule, from the official site:
| Date (2027, expected) | What runs | Start (2026 time) |
|---|---|---|
| Sun 1 Aug | Eve festival at Aoi Umi Park | Daytime to 21:00 |
| Mon 2 – Tue 3 Aug | Children’s nebuta + about 15 large floats | 19:00 |
| Wed 4 – Fri 6 Aug | About 20 large floats | 18:45 |
| Sat 7 Aug | Day parade; then fireworks and four floats on the sea, Aomori Port | 13:00; 19:15–about 21:00 |
How do Aomori Nebuta Festival paid seats work?
In 2026 every individual seat cost ¥4,000 including a guidebook, for any night from 2 to 6 August or for the 7 August day parade. The day parade plus fireworks set cost ¥9,500. Wheelchair seats were ¥3,200, with up to two companions at ¥4,000, per the official seat page.
- 2026 timeline: lottery presale 1–7 June; first general sale 27 June; second general sale 18 July. The 7 August set went on sale 26 June and day-parade-only seats on 29 June.
- Groups (10 or more) had to apply from April.
- Overseas visitors get an English booking guide on the official site.
- Rain: the festival is held in rain and cancelled only if conditions demand it, per Walkerplus.
Do you need a seat? Not for the first night. The roadside is free and the floats are huge. A seat earns its price on the busiest nights, 4 to 6 August, when the kerb is several people deep.
How can you join the Nebuta parade as a haneto?
Anyone can. You do not need to belong to a group, register or pay, per the official haneto rules. The one condition is the full costume. Turn up dressed, find your float group and jump along with the music.
- The costume: a white yukata hitched up to the knee with a pink or blue underskirt, a flower hat (hanagasa), red or pink sashes, white tabi socks and straw sandals tied on so they cannot fall off.
- Where to meet: the haneto assembly point on the sea side of the Shinmachi–Yanagimachi crossing, before your chosen float group sets off. Joining mid-route may be refused when it is crowded.
- The rules: no turning back against the parade; no whistles that clash with the music; no fireworks, firecrackers or big sake bottles; no dropping cans; follow the marshals. Clear the road for fire engines and ambulances.
- When it ends: once your group finishes its loop, disperse. The organisers warn your legs will feel like sticks.
Where can you rent a haneto costume?
Rental sets cost about ¥4,000, with tabi, sandals and the flower hat charged extra; a full set to buy runs about ¥10,000, per the official costume page. Shops listed there include Nebuta Kashi-isho Narumiya (017-775-3011), Hanetoya (017-774-2550), Kobeya (017-723-3389) and Marubun Fukushi Gofukuten (017-722-3613). The organisers recommend booking ahead. Ask whether dressing help is included; the page does not say.

Akita Kanto Matsuri: what to know
Kanto are bamboo poles hung with paper lanterns, raised and balanced by performers in the street. Akita uses about 280 poles and 10,000 lanterns. The biggest, the Owaka, is 12 metres long, weighs 50 kg and carries 46 lanterns, per the official English page.
In 2026, seats went on sale on 14 May at 10:00 for individuals (14 or fewer), by phone (018-866-9977) or on the official seat page. Adults and children pay the same; infants without a seat are free.
| Seat (2026) | Price | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Masu box (up to 6 people) | ¥28,000 per box | In front of Lawson Omachi 2-chome; 14 boxes a night, by lottery |
| S | ¥4,500 | Raised stands on the central reservation |
| A | ¥4,000 | Other raised stands and folding chairs |
| B | ¥3,500 | Benches |
Sales for 2026 have closed. For 2027, expect the same mid-May window. Standing on the free stretches of Kanto Odori works fine; the S seats are raised stands on the central reservation.
Sendai Tanabata Matsuri: what to know
Tanabata is the opposite of Nebuta and Kanto: a daytime festival with no parade. Huge paper streamers and decorations hang from bamboo along the arcades, and you simply walk under them. It runs 6–8 August, 10:00 to 21:00 (about 20:00 on the last day), held in rain and cancelled only in severe weather, with no postponement, per Walkerplus. Entry is free.
The night before, Sendai fires about 16,000 shells over the Hirose River near Nishi Park, a three-minute walk from Omachi-Nishikoen subway station. In 2026 it ran on 5 August, 19:30–20:30.

Why book Tohoku festival hotels a year ahead?
Because three cities host millions of festival visitors in one week: Walkerplus puts typical attendance at about 2.5 million for Nebuta and 2 million for Tanabata. Aomori is the smallest of the three cities, so its central rooms for the Aomori Nebuta Festival nights go first. If you are reading this in October 2026, you are already on the clock for August 2027.
- Book as soon as dates open. Many hotels open about a year out; set an alert and book a refundable rate the day it appears.
- Book every night now, then refine. Free-cancellation rates let you lock in Aomori, Akita and Sendai and swap later.
- Have a fallback town. Hachinohe is on the Shinkansen line south of Aomori; Kakunodate and Omagari are Komachi stops before Akita. Have an IC card ready for local trains.
- Consider a ryokan instead. An onsen inn outside the cities can be easier to find than a business hotel; see our best onsen towns in Japan.

Yes. Do Aomori on 3–4 August, Akita on 5–6 August and Sendai on 6–8 August, moving by Shinkansen. Six days is enough.
How much are Aomori Nebuta seats?
In 2026, ¥4,000 per seat for any night from 2 to 6 August or the 7 August day parade, and ¥9,500 for the day parade plus fireworks.

Sources and how we checked
Dates, times, prices and rules were checked between 19 and 21 October 2026 against the linked official sources: the Aomori Nebuta, Akita Kanto and Sendai Tanabata organisers, Akita City’s tourism site and JR East, with Walkerplus for attendance and the fireworks. No 2027 dates had been announced, so all 2027 dates here are expected dates based on each festival’s fixed calendar; we will update this guide as they are confirmed.
